ROBERTSON STATE SCHOOL Principal’s Update By Ms Margaret Berry WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY – ACHIEVEMENTS AND RECOGNITION. On Friday 28 October the school celebrated World Teachers’ Day and we recognised the great work of our teachers in the school. The P & C provided a wonderful breakfast and many parent reps acknowlegded their classroom teachers with celebratory greetings. I would like to add my ‘thank you’ for the amazing job that our teachers do at Robertson. I have included the Teacher School Survey which demonstrated the satisfaction and professionalism of teachers at our school (see attached). This is the best teacher survey result we have ever received. I would also like to commend the following teachers who completed an online certificate course through Griffith University for the introduction of the Australian Curriculum Digital Technologies in 2017. Many more of our teachers have enrolled in this 10 week online course which once again demonstrates the professionalism of our Robertson teachers. Photo of Janetta Martina (2 courses), Zoe Grafton (2 courses), Tim Colston, Katie Harris and Andrew Grant. Absent: Aileen Venetis, Alison Coverdale, Amy Feeney, Claire Ford and Robyn Nothdurft. SUNNYBANK STATE HIGH SCHOOL AWARDS EVENING Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of presenting some of the senior awards at the Sunnybank State High School awards evening. This was an inspiring evening as I witnessed many students from many different cultural backgrounds demonstrate outstanding achievement and commitment to academic studies, community, sporting and cultural participation. The distance travelled by students from non-English speaking backgrounds is a credit to this school. I would like to pay tribute to principal colleague, Ms Tracey Cook, and her staff and all the hard working students on their achievements. KIDPRENEUR CHALLENGE – NATIONAL WINNERS Ten teams from Ms Grafton’s 5/6 class have been involved in the Kidpreneur Challenge, where students work using online resources to establish a business model then develop their products and sell them in a real life situation. On Tuesday the groups held a Market Day to sell their wares. All funds raised go to the Canteen charity for children with cancer. Two of our teams have been selected as national winners for this challenge: JAC’s: Joshua C, Christopher S, Asher W and BFG: Aliya F, Yunxi T and these students will travel to Melbourne on 15 - 16 Nov with two teachers to participate in a ‘Kidpreneur-in-Residence’ one day business experience at Moose Toys Head Office. The students have also each won a Moose Toys gift bag valued at $100. Each team has won over $4500 in computer equipment for the school. Well done to these students and to all who participated in the challenge. Congratulations to Ms Grafton and Mrs Geary for their leadership, and to our students’ families for their support. Futuristic models of learning like this prepare our students to be global citizens. World Teachers’ Day Breakfast Celebration. Thank you P&C!
Deputy News Prep to Year 3
By Ms Cartia Baladone SUPPORTING READING IN OUR COMMUNITY Research continually shows that reading to young children results in significant gains in learning when they come to primary school. At Robertson our school and our community frequently enhance our students’ learning opportunities by making sure reading is a priority at home and at school. It would be great if all families could offer this opportunity, but for some it is unaffordable. We are currently looking to assist Crestmead State School with their ‘Books in Homes Project’.
This is where we are asking for your help. If you have second hand books at home that your children have out grown or no longer read, please send them to school. They will be sent to Crestmead and donated to their families in Term 4. The books can include hardcover books for toddlers or younger
readers, picture books or chapter books. Encyclopaedias or damaged books would not be donated. Thank you for sharing your love of reading with our community and thank you for extending that love to another community in need. Bring your books to the office for collection.
LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM PREP - YEAR 3 Final payments for the swimming program are coming in. Thank you to our families for getting these updated. The closing date for money collection will be Friday 11 November. Payment can be made online or at the administration.
If your child is not a strong swimmer is will be a perfect program for them
to participate in as the lessons are structured at their ability levels. Alternatively, if your child is a confident swimmer they will have an opportunity to work with other skilled swimmers and instructors on their techniques around the pool. If you have any questions please contact the classroom teacher or our office.
MUSIC FEST CELEBRATIONS Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Bryer on a wonderful result at the recent Music Fest competition. Senior band was awarded the gold
and the junior band the silver award. The team effort was evident on the day with all students representing the school with pride.
Deputy News Year 4 to Year 6 By Mrs Jennifer Johnson
Kidpreneur was a huge success! Such an excited buzz around the school this Tuesday with students selling their many wonderful and creative items to raise money for Canteen. Congratulations to Lisa
Geary, Zoe Grafton, students of 5/6G and their parents for the immense effort required to pull off such a
successful event. The stall holders were very professional in preparing their goods, setting up on the day and conducting business for this worthy cause. Everyone involved
should be very proud of themselves. Congratulations!
STUDENT LEADERSHIP We are currently collating and beginning the process of shortlisting the many high quality applications for leadership positions in 2017. In Week 6, we will begin to speak with students about the next step in the process towards gaining a leadership position for next year. I am impressed with the number of applications and the attitude of giving it a go of so many. It can be hard to put your hand up and say you want to be a leader when you know that there are limited positions. Well done to all applicants.
WRITING At Robertson State School we have a school wide expectation that students engage with Everyday Writing within any subject area each day.
The Process for Everyday Writing is:
Have my book and pencil ready
Activate my prior knowledge
Write the whole time
Reread when I stop
Think: What could follow that?
Review and revise while drafting

PE News Regular interschool sport has now come to a conclusion for the year at Robertson. Thank you to all involved in the Gala Day activities. Thank you to those students who stood up to be team leaders, thank you to those students who kept trying their best
for the team, thank you to those students who helped and encouraged other team members, but lastly a big thank you to the teachers who were coaches during the year. There are still a couple of sporting events remaining where Robertson State School will be competing against other schools. These are major invitational events in which we will be against potentially any primary school in Queensland. I will keep you posted.
Lastly we had two students compete at the recent State Athletic trials. Lilli and Xavier both competed in high jump, with Lilli coming equal 6th in the state and Xavier coming 12th.
Well done to both students.
Library News OVERDUE BOOKS Our students currently have a large number of overdue books. Could you please assist in encouraging children to return their books by the due date, and check for overdue notices coming home. Overdue items mean that other borrowers cannot share these
books, and students are not permitted to borrow while they have outstanding overdue loans. Invoices for items that are significantly overdue will be sent home soon. If an invoice is received, please pay the replacement fee promptly at the office.
BOOK COVERING HELP Thank you to the wonderful volunteers who joined us last Friday to cover books. It was a great start and we still have lots more to go! We would love your help with book covering in the library. If you are free to come in to the library at any time to help out with some covering it would be greatly appreciated. It is not hard, just time consuming! And it is much easier than covering
children’s school books. Babies and toddlers are welcome to come along and we have tea, coffee and milo for all volunteers.
STORYTELLING Storytelling for pre-preps and younger siblings of current students continues this term. We have another packed schedule including fairy tales and a Book Fair! We are so excited to work with the youngest members of our school community. Join us every Thursday afternoon
from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm in the library. Mrs Claire Ennis Teacher Librarian
