When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of AthleticsCraig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketballprogram, he didn’t have to look far.
Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 37-yearDivision I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May11, 2010, and the 2012-13 campaign is his third season as head coach of theColonials. He owns an overall record of 63-34 (.649).
Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading theColonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Con-ference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shyof earning its third consecutive title with an 85-82 overtime setback @ LIU Brooklyn (3/9/11). Despite a roster that featured just one senior for the second straight year, Toole led the Colonials toan overall record of 26-11 (.703) in 2011-12, including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC that helped RobertMorris earn the No. 3 seed in the 2012 NEC Tournament. RMU advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tour-nament championship game before suffering a 90-73 loss @ LIU Brooklyn (3/7/12). The Colonials accepted a bid to the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) despitefalling short of their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years and advanced to thequarterfinals thanks to road victories @ Indiana State and @ Toledo. The win over the Sycamores in thefirst round of the 2012 CIT marked RMU’s first victory in a national postseason tournament since 1983. Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the lastfive years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season when Toole joined the staff through the 2011-12 campaign,RMU posted an overall record of 117-56 (.676), with the 117 victories both a school and NEC record for afive-year span. While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. From 2007 to 2012, the Colonials posted a mark of 71-19 (.789) against league opposition, finishingno lower than third over that span. Overall, RMU has established 144 team or individual records, with59 of those coming under the watchful eye of Toole. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the champi-onship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac inthe 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT),dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010,RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NECTournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-upMichigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at theDunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at LafayetteCollege in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes thathelped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served asthe director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management forthe nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) beforetransferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). The Friendly Confines - Karvel Anderson has provided Robert Morris with one of its mostnatural scorers in recent seasons, and the junior guard has really taken to playing his homegames at the Charles L. Sewall Center. Anderson finished with 14 points in a 77-65 victoryover Monmouth (2/21/13), including a pair of three-pointers on back-to-back possessionswith under three and-a-half minutes remaining that helped propel the Colonials to the win.In 11 home games so far this season, Anderson is averaging 13.0 points per game while shoot-ing 62 percent (49-for-79) from the field, including 58 percent (29-for-50) from deep.
Front Court, Deep Threat - While redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson and sophomoreforward Lucky Jones have been RMU’s top rebounding tandem in 2012-13, the duo have alsobeen showing their exploits in shooting from beyond the arc. As members of the startinglineup against Northeast Conference foes, Johnson and Jones have combined to shoot 51.7percent (45-for-87) from deep. Overall against league foes this season, Jones enters Satur-day’s game ranked third in the circuit in three-point field goal percentage (54.3 percent),while Johnson ranks eighth (44.9 percent). Joining Jones and Johnson to rank in the top 10in the NEC against conference opponents in three-point field goal percentage is junior guardKarvel Anderson, who ranks seventh at 44.9 percent.
A Sense of Urgency - Russell Johnson will play his final regular-season home game at theCharles L. Sewall Center Saturday, and he is arguably playing the most complete basketballof his career as he enters the contest. Since being inserted into the starting lineup againstCentral Connecticut State (1/5/13), Johnson has averaged 12.5 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.2 as-sists and 2.2 steals over the course of RMU’s last 14 games while shooting 46.7 percent (57-for-122) from the field, including 46.8 percent (22-for-47) from beyond the arc, and 70.9percent (39-for-55) at the free-throw line. Johnson is RMU’s active leading rebounder with704 and became just the third player in school history to eclipse 700 career boards by grab-bing seven in a 77-65 win over Monmouth (2/21/13).
Luck Of The Draw - Since serving a one-game suspension due to a violation of team rules inRMU’s 88-54 victory @ Fairleigh Dickinson (1/10/13), there may not be a hotter Colonialthan sophomore forward Lucky Jones. Jones has scored in double figures in 11 of his last 12games and owns the longest streak of double-figure scoring games this season, as he’sreached the plateau in each of his last seven games. Over his last seven contests, Jones isaveraging 14.9 points while shooting 55.1 percent (27-for-49) from the field, including 58.3percent (14-for-24) from deep, and 87.8 percent (36-for-41) at the free-throw line.
Did You Know? RMU is a perfect 19-0 so far in 2012-13 when either tied or leading at half-time, yet 0-9 in contests when trailing at the break.
Chicks Dig The Long Ball - The three-pointer and Robert Morris has become synonymousover the last decade and-a-half, and the Colonials are continuing in that vain in 2012-13.Over the last 21 games the Colonials have averaged 9.1 three-point field goals per contestwhile shooting 41.8 percent (191-for-457) from beyond the arc. The surge has the Colonialsleading the Northeast Conference in three-point field goal percentage (.385) while rankingsecond in three-point field goals made (8.29).
Downtown - Thanks to eight three-pointers in an 83-79 overtime victory over Wagner(2/9/13), Robert Morris eclipsed 200 three-pointers for the ninth time in the last 10 years. The Colonials enter Saturday’s game against Fairleigh Dickinson with 232 three-pointerson the 2012-13 campaign and are on pace to finish the regular season with 257 three-pointfield goals. That total would rank second in the RMU single-season record book, as the sin-gle-season record of 280 was established by the 2007-08 Colonials.
Dishing It Out - Velton Jones has been RMU’s floor general for the last four years, and theproof is in the numbers. He became just the second player in school history to eclipse 500career assists in a 76-68 win over Mount St. Mary’s (1/26/13) by finishing with seven dimesand owns 517 on his career. Jones needs 39 assists to eclipse the career record of 555 that isheld by former point guard Forest Grant (1980-84) and would need to average 13.0 assistsper game over RMU’s final three regular-season contests to eclipse the mark. He enters Sat-urday’s game against Fairleigh Dickinson ranked third in the Northeast Conference in as-sists (5.17 per game) and fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.14).

Entering Saturday’s game against Fairleigh Dickinson,RMU has lost a total of 60 games due to injuries or other reasons up and down its roster. In fact, only redshirt junior guard Coron Williams and freshman forward StephanHawkins have played all 28 games for Robert Morris so far this season. It began in thepreseason for RMU, when senior forward Lijah Thompson suffered a season-ending kneeinjury. Joining Thompson to miss games are forwards Keith Armstrong (17), RussellJohnson (4), Mike McFadden (2) and Lucky Jones (1) and guards Velton Jones (4), An-thony Myers-Pate (3) and Karvel Anderson (1).
The Center of Attention - In addition to his late-game heroics in a 60-57 win @ LIUBrooklyn (2/2/13), redshirt senior guard Velton Jones became just the ninth player inthe 32-year history of the Northeast Conference, and the first Colonial, to eclipse careertotals of 1,500 points and 500 assists. Jones is the first player in the NEC to turn the tricksince Jeremy Goode of Mount St. Mary’s and Jaytornah Wisseh of LIU Brooklyn concludedtheir respective careers in 2010. Goode finished with 1,716 points and 603 assists, whileWisseh compiled 1,693 points and 538 dimes. Jones enters Saturday’s game against Fair-leigh Dickinson with career totals of 1,519 points and 517 assists, which rank fifth andsecond, respectively, in the Robert Morris career record book.
Joining The Club - Redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson joined RMU’s exclusive clubin an 84-70 win @ Saint Francis U. (1/24/13), as his jumper with 2:23 left in the first halfallowed him to become the 21st member of the Robert Morris 1,000-point club. Johnson, who ranks 17th all-time in school history with 1,115 career points, is also just the 12thplayer in school annals to eclipse career totals of both 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. Now that Johnson has joined the club, the next Colonial in line is redshirt junior guardCoron Williams, who is 111 points shy of 1,000 for his career.

Williams has started 70 straight games dating back to the 2010-11 season, the longest streak by a Colonial since redshirt senior guard Velton Jones started 70 con-secutive games before having it snapped last season.
A Special Night - Junior guard Karvel Anderson put forth arguably the most impressiveshooting display in school history in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Charles L.Sewall Center, hitting all 10 of his shots from the floor in the victory, including 8-for-8from beyond the arc. Anderson is the first student-athlete in school history to post aperfect shooting night from the field with as many as 10 field goals. Former Colonial RobRobinson (2008-10) held the old mark when he finished 9-for-9 shooting from the floorin a 104-56 win over Wagner Jan. 17, 2009, at the Sewall Center. Anderson is also just thesecond student-athlete in school history to convert eight field goals from beyond thearc without a miss. Former Colonial Scott Shepherd (1988-91) also finished 8-for-8 fromdeep in a 110-80 win over LIU Brooklyn Feb. 8, 1990, at the Sewall Center.
