When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of AthleticsCraig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketballprogram, he didn’t have to look far.
Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 37-yearDivision I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May11, 2010, and the 2012-13 campaign is his third season as head coach of theColonials. He owns an overall record of 58-33 (.637).
Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading theColonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Con-ference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shyof earning its third consecutive title with an 85-82 overtime setback @ LIU Brooklyn (3/9/11). Despite a roster that featured just one senior for the second straight year, Toole led the Colonials toan overall record of 26-11 (.703) in 2011-12, including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC that helped RobertMorris earn the No. 3 seed in the 2012 NEC Tournament. RMU advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tour-nament championship game before suffering a 90-73 loss @ LIU Brooklyn (3/7/12). The Colonials accepted a bid to the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) despitefalling short of their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years and advanced to thequarterfinals thanks to road victories @ Indiana State and @ Toledo. The win over the Sycamores in thefirst round of the 2012 CIT marked RMU’s first victory in a national postseason tournament since 1983. Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the lastfive years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season when Toole joined the staff through the 2011-12 campaign,RMU posted an overall record of 117-56 (.676), with the 117 victories both a school and NEC record for afive-year span. While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. From 2007 to 2012, the Colonials posted a mark of 71-19 (.789) against league opposition, finishingno lower than third over that span. Overall, RMU has established 142 team or individual records, with57 of those coming under the watchful eye of Toole. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the champi-onship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac inthe 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT),dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010,RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NECTournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-upMichigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at theDunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at LafayetteCollege in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes thathelped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served asthe director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management forthe nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) beforetransferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with1,341 points in 109 games. Stepping In, Stepping Up - With redshirt senior guard Velton Jones leaving the game in theopening minutes @ St. Francis Brooklyn (1/31/13) due to injury, it gave an opportunity forjunior guard Anthony Myers-Pate to step up for the Colonials. In 26 minutes, Myers-Patescored a season-high 14 points to tie for team-high honors with junior guard Karvel Ander-son while also dishing out six assists against no turnovers. It marks the first time in histhree years on the Robert Morris roster that Myers-Pate has led the team in scoring in agame, and he enters Saturday’s game @ LIU Brooklyn averaging 8.2 points and 4.0 assistsover his last five games while shooting 45.7 percent (16-for-35) from the field.
The Rising - Russell Johnson opened the 2012-13 campaign dealing with an ankle injury thatlimited his abilities in the early going of the season, but the redshirt senior forward is offi-cially in a groove. Over the course of RMU’s last seven games, Johnson has arguably beenthe most complete player for the Colonials. He has averaged 11.9 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.1assists and 2.3 steals per game shooting 43.9 percent (25-for-57) from the field, including40 percent (8-for-20) from deep, and 69.4 percent (25-for-36) at the free-throw line. In-cluded in that stretch is a season-high 22 points in an 87-75 win over Quinnipiac (1/19/13)as well as his sixth career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in an 84-55 victory@ Fairleigh Dickinson (1/10/13).
Surf Board - Redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson was all over the glass in RMU’s open-ing game of its swing through Brooklyn, N.Y., grabbing a career-high 15 caroms at the PopeP.E. Center against St. Francis Brooklyn (1/31/13). Johnson became the first Colonial to grabat least 15 boards in a game since former Colonial A.J. Jackson (2003-08) finished with 15rebounds in a 73-69 victory @ Marshall (11/16/06), a span of 219 games. The program’s activeleader in rebounds with 674, Johnson ranks fifth all-time at RMU in career boards. Over thefinal nine regular-season games of the 2012-13 campaign, Johnson would need to average8.6 rebounds per contest to eclipse the career school record of 751 that is held by formerColonials Anthony Dickens (1985-90) and Tony Lee (2004-08).
Did You Know? RMU is a perfect 14-0 so far in 2012-13 when either tied or leading at half-time, yet 0-8 in contests when trailing at the break. In three seasons under head coach An-drew Toole, the Colonials are 46-7 (.868) when either tied or leading at intermission.
Chicks Dig The Long Ball - The three-pointer and Robert Morris has become synonymousover the last decade and-a-half, and the Colonials are continuing in that vain in 2012-13.Over the last 15 games, a stretch in which RMU is 11-4 (.733), the Colonials have averaged9.5 three-point field goals per contest while shooting 41 percent (143-for-349) from beyondthe arc. The recent surge has the Colonials leading the Northeast Conference in three-pointfield goals per game (8.36) while ranking fourth in three-point field goal percentage (.372).The Colonials enter Saturday’s tilt @ LIU Brooklyn on pace to finish the 2012-13 regular-season with 259 three-pointers, which would rank second in the RMU single-season recordbook.
Tag Team - Junior guard Karvel Anderson and redshirt junior guard Coron Williams haveteamed up this season to give Robert Morris a lethal combination from deep. Through thefirst 22 games of the 2012-13 season, the duo have combined for 105 three-pointers, an av-erage of 4.8 per contest. Anderson enters Saturday’s game @ LIU Brooklyn ranked fourthin the Northeast Conference in three-pointers per game (2.67), while Williams ranks eighth(2.23). The duo are on pace to finish the 2012-13 regular season with 148 three-pointers,which would by two triples shy of establishing a new school record for three-pointers byan RMU tandem. The record of 150 is held by former Colonials Jeremy Chappell (2005-09)and Jimmy Langhurst (2006-10), who turned the trick in 2008-09.
Dishing It Out - Velton Jones has been RMU’s floor general for the last four years, and theproof is in the numbers. He became just the second player in school history to eclipse 500career assists in a 76-68 win over Mount St. Mary’s (1/26/13) by finishing with seven dimesand owns 502 on his career. Jones needs 54 assists to eclipse the career record of 555 thatis held by former point guard Forest Grant (1980-84) and would need to average 6.0 assistsper game over RMU’s final nine regular-season contests to eclipse the mark. He enters Sat-urday’s game ranked third in the Northeast Conference in assists (5.37 per game) and fourthin assist-to-turnover ratio (2.17).

RMU’s Last Game - Robert Morris saw its season-high six-game winning streak snapped, Jan.31, with a 71-61 loss to St. Francis Brooklyn at the Pope P.E. Center. SFC jumped out to an early4-0 lead, but the Colonials scored 11 unanswered points to take their first lead of the contest.Sophomore forward Lucky Jones scored four points during the surge, while junior guard KarvelAnderson converted a three-pointer. AkeemJohnson would give the Terriers a 49-40 advantage with 9:46 to play, but a 6-1 spurt that fea-tured a pair of layups from Myers-Pate and a layup from redshirt senior forward Russell John-son helped RMU close to within 50-46 with 6:53 to go. On defense, the Colonials switched to a2-3 zone, which stifled the Terriers. Robert Morris was about to post another stand on defense, but Ben Mockford buried a three-pointer with just one second left on the shot clock to give SFCa 53-46 cushion at the 5:42 mark of the second half. Mockford would connect from deep againless than a minute later to give the Terriers a 56-48 lead, and Anthony White would convert alayup with just 2:50 to play to give St. Francis Brooklyn a 63-54 advantage. Robert Morris Quick FactsA Milestone Delayed - Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones played just two minutes @ St.Francis Brooklyn (1/31/13) before leaving due to injury, delaying his opportunity to joinan exclusive club in the Northeast Conference. Jones owns career totals of 1,499 pointsand 502 assists, and with his next point will be just the ninth player in Northeast Con-ference history, and the first Colonial, to eclipse career totals of 1,500 points and 500assists. Jones will be the first player in the NEC to turn the trick since Jeremy Goode ofMount St. Mary’s and Jaytornah Wisseh of LIU Brooklyn concluded their respective ca-reers in 2010. Goode finished with 1,716 points and 603 assists, while Wisseh compiled1,693 points and 538 dimes.

(1/24/13), as his jumper with 2:23 left in the first halfallowed him to become the 21st member of the Robert Morris 1,000-point club. Johnson, who ranks 19th all-time in school history with 1,030 career points entering Saturday’sgame @ LIU Brooklyn, is also just the 12th player in school annals to eclipse career totalsof both 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.
