When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of AthleticsCraig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketballprogram, he didn’t have to look far.
Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 37-yearDivision I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May11, 2010, and the 2012-13 campaign is his third season as head coach of theColonials. He owns an overall record of 64-34 (.653).
Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading theColonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Con-ference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shyof earning its third consecutive title with an 85-82 overtime setback @ LIU Brooklyn (3/9/11). Despite a roster that featured just one senior for the second straight year, Toole led the Colonials toan overall record of 26-11 (.703) in 2011-12, including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC that helped RobertMorris earn the No. 3 seed in the 2012 NEC Tournament. RMU advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tour-nament championship game before suffering a 90-73 loss @ LIU Brooklyn (3/7/12). The Colonials accepted a bid to the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) despitefalling short of their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years and advanced to thequarterfinals thanks to road victories @ Indiana State and @ Toledo. The win over the Sycamores in thefirst round of the 2012 CIT marked RMU’s first victory in a national postseason tournament since 1983. Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the lastfive years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season when Toole joined the staff through the 2011-12 campaign,RMU posted an overall record of 117-56 (.676), with the 117 victories both a school and NEC record for afive-year span. While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. From 2007 to 2012, the Colonials posted a mark of 71-19 (.789) against league opposition, finishingno lower than third over that span. Overall, RMU has established 144 team or individual records, with58 of those coming under the watchful eye of Toole. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the champi-onship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac inthe 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT),dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010,RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NECTournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-upMichigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at theDunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at LafayetteCollege in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes thathelped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served asthe director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management forthe nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) beforetransferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest.Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt.Lebanon, Pa.

Surf Board - Robert Morris put forth its best rebounding performance of the 2012-13 cam-paign in an 89-46 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (2/23/13), posting a margin of +29 inoutrebounding the Knights, 56-27. It marked the first time the Colonials grabbed at least50 rebounds in a game since a 93-77 victory @ Navy (11/14/07), when RMU finished withexactly 50 caroms. The 56 boards against FDU is also the second highest total against a Di-vision I opponent in the Robert Morris single-game record book, trailing only the 57 re-bounds the Colonials grabbed in an 84-66 win over LIU Brooklyn (2/20/93) at the CharlesL. Sewall Center. The single-game mark for rebounds is 62, which came Nov. 29, 1986, in an84-50 victory over Division II Clarion in the 1986-87 season opener.
A Sense of Urgency - Russell Johnson will play the final regular-season games of his careerthis weekend during RMU’s swing through New England, and the redshirt senior forwardis arguably playing the most complete basketball of his career as he enters the trip. Sincebeing inserted into the starting lineup against Central Connecticut State (1/5/13), Johnsonhas averaged 12.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.1 steals over the course of RMU’slast 15 games while shooting 45.5 percent (60-for-132) from the field, including 42.9 percent(24-for-56) from beyond the arc, and 71.9 percent (41-for-57) at the free-throw line. In-cluded in that span are a pair of double-doubles and three games eclipsing the 20-pointplateau, including a season-high 22 points in an 87-75 win over Quinnipiac (1/19/13).
A Late Surge - While Russell Johnson is playing some of the best basketball of his careerover the last two months, a byproduct of the redshirt senior forward’s play is that he’s mak-ing a concentrated effort to become the program’s all-time leading rebounder. Johnson isRMU’s active leader in career rebounds with 715 and became just the third player in schoolhistory to eclipse 700 career boards by grabbing seven in a 77-65 win over Monmouth(2/21/13). Johnson is 37 caroms shy of becoming the program’s top rebounder, and with atleast three games remaining in 2012-13, would need to average 12.3 rebounds per contestto eclipse the record of 751 that is held by former Colonials Anthony Dickens (1985-90) andTony Lee (2004-08).
Another Record - Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones added to his growing list of accom-plishments at Robert Morris in an 89-46 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (2/23/13). Alreadythe RMU career record holder for free throws (484), free-throw attempts (672) and con-secutive games played (121), Jones earned his 121st career start against the Knights. Thatbreaks the old record of 120 that was held by former Colonial Jeremy Chappell(2005-09).
Did You Know? RMU is a perfect 20-0 so far in 2012-13 when either tied or leading at half-time, yet 0-9 in contests when trailing at the break.
Chicks Dig The Long Ball - The three-pointer and Robert Morris has become synonymousover the last decade and-a-half, and the Colonials are continuing in that vain in 2012-13.Over the last 22 games the Colonials have averaged 9.2 three-point field goals per contestwhile shooting 41.4 percent (202-for-488) from beyond the arc. The surge has the Colonialsleading the Northeast Conference in three-point field goal percentage (.384) while rankingsecond in three-point field goals made (8.38).
Downtown - Thanks to eight three-pointers in an 83-79 overtime victory over Wagner(2/9/13), Robert Morris eclipsed 200 three-pointers for the ninth time in the last 10 years. The Colonials enter Thursday’s game @ Bryant with 243 three-pointers on the 2012-13 cam-paign and are on pace to finish the season with 268 three-point field goals. That total wouldrank second in the RMU single-season record book, as the single-season record of 280 wasestablished by the 2007-08 Colonials.
Dishing It Out - Velton Jones has been RMU’s floor general for the last four years, and theproof is in the numbers. He became just the second player in school history to eclipse 500career assists in a 76-68 win over Mount St. Mary’s (1/26/13) by finishing with seven dimesand owns 520 on his career. Jones needs 36 assists to eclipse the career record of 555 thatis held by former point guard Forest Grant (1980-84) and would need to average 12.0 assistswith at least three contests remaining to eclipse the mark. He enters Thursday’s game @Bryant ranked fourth in the Northeast Conference in both assists (5.08 per game) and as-sist-to-turnover ratio (2.12).
