Dr. Charles H. Lamoureux, a respected botanist and director of the Harold A. Lyon Arboretum in Manoa, died Monday in Honolulu. He was 67. A leading expert on Hawaiian plants and natural history, Lamoureux had variously served as chairman of the botany department at the University of Hawaii and associate dean for academic affairs at the UH College of Arts and Sciences. While working at the arboretum since 1992, Lamoureux continued to co-teach a popular university course with zoology professor E. Alison Kay on the natural history of the Hawaiian Islands. "To go out with him on a hike, it was just eye-opening as to what what he could see in the surroundings," Kay said. "He was very concerned with the health of the Islands, and that’s what really makes him so attractive to everyone." Lamoureux was born in Rhode Island and earned botany degrees at the University of Rhode Island and at UH. He received his Ph.D. at the University of California-Davis in 1961, and returned to Hawai‘i to teach. Lamoureux did field work in American Samoa, Bali, Micronesia and the Marshall Islands. He also served as a consultant to many agencies, including the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. His book "Trailside Plants of Hawai‘i’s National Parks" received the U.S. National Park Service Director’s Award and the National Parks Cooperative Association Award of Excellence in 1977-78.

UH Botany Department chairwoman Sterling Keeley said Lamoureux was a fountainof knowledge. "He had the most amazing memory for history, details and facts," she said. "It’s like losing the encyclopedia of all the things you ever really wanted to know but you don’t store yourself." Lamoureux also served on the city Honolulu Botanical Gardens board and volunteered countless hours to help the city’s five botanical gardens. Paul Weissich, botanical gardens director for 33 years, credited Lamoureux for much of their success. "Charlie was very helpful, very cooperative, very supportive and was a frequent source of critical information," Weissich said. "It leaves a puka in this community that’s going to be virtually impossible to fill." Funeral services are pending.

Lt. Gen. Stanley R. "Swede" Larsen, born in Honolulu, died Wednesday in a car crash in Shelby County, Ala. In World War II, he served with the 35th Infantry Regiment of the 25th Division, going from company commander of a heavy weapons company to regimental commander. He earned the Distinguished Service Cross and the Silver Star. After serving as an instructor at the Infantry School in Fort Benning, Ga., from January to June 1946, he was transferred to the War Department public relations department in Washington, D.C. In June 1947, Larsen was assigned as chief of the pictorial section of the public information division and in 1948 became an assistant secretary of the General Staff, Office of the Chief of Staff of the Army. In September 1949, he became aide-de-camp to Gen. J. Lawton Collins, chief of staff of the Army. Larsen took command of the 325th Airborn Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Divison, and in October 1952 became deputy chief of staff and later chief of staff of the XVIII Airborne Corps. In April 1956, Larsen became assistant division commander of the 10th Infantry Division in Germany. He served as assistant commandant of the U.S. Army Infantry School, and later deputy chief of staff for plans and operations for the 8th U.S Army, Korea. In October 1960, he assumed command of the U.S. Army Training Center. He later took command of the XXI U.S. Army Corps. In Europe, he was commanding general of the 8th Infantry Division and later was deputy chief of staff for operations, U.S. Army, Europe. In 1965, Larsen commanded all U.S. forces in Central Vietnam. From 1965-67, he commanded the I Field Force to the U.S. Continental Army Command, Fort Monroe, Va. He was later commanding general, 6th U.S. Army, Presidio of San Francisco. In August 1971, he became deputy commander in chief and chief of staff of the U.S. Army, Pacific, at

Fort Shafter. He was a graduate of Punahou School and the U.S. Military Academy. Services are pending

Edward Kwai Sing Lau, a surgeon who participated on the first kidney transplant team in Hawai‘i, died Sunday at his residence. He was 84. Lau was born on March 21, 1916, in Honolulu and graduated from McKinley High School, Catholic and Yenching Universities in Peking, China, and the University of Hawai‘i. He received his training at Marquette School of Medicine and internship at the Queen’s Medical Center. From 1944 to 1946, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II on Iwo Jima. He was discharged as a major and received the Bronze Star Medal for valor. In 1951, Lau resumed his medical training and attended Baylor College of Medicine and Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston, Texas, as a chief surgical resident. He was certified by the American Board of Surgery and held teaching appointments at Baylor College and the UH School of Medicine. He also was chief of surgery at St. Francis Hospital in Honolulu from 1959-1965 and 1969-1971. Lau’s son, Curtis, said his father was influential in getting accreditation for UH’s residency program and helped promote the UH School of Medicine.

"Through his contacts on Mainland, he was able to invite prominent surgeons and professionals to come to the UH medical school program to discuss, lecture and teach," he said. His most notable medical accomplishments were performing the first surgical procedure on an aneurysm of the thoracic aorta and participating on Hawai‘i’s first kidney transplant team. He is survived by his wife, Elsie; daughter, Sandra Tateishi; three sons, Jeffrey, Mitchell and Curtis; and nine grandchildren. A private burial service will be held Friday at Hawaiian Memorial Park. Momi Minn Lee, former state representative and longtime Democratic Party leader, died Wednesday in Honolulu. She was 80. Lee was born in Honolulu on Jan. 28, 1920, and was a graduate of McKinley High School. She attended the University of Hawai‘i, where she earned a degree in economics. In 1941, Lee married Philip Minn, and the two joined the territory’s fledgling Democratic Party in 1952. Two years later, Minn was elected to the Territorial Legislature. In 1966, Minn died, and Lee was appointed to serve out the term of her late husband. Lee was re-elected to the House in 1968 and 1970.

For 24 years, Lee was a Democratic National Committeewoman, and she attended every national convention over a 40-year span. She also was a member of the party’s state Central Committe and was a delegate to the 1968 State Constitutional Convention.

Long-time Democratic Party members remembered "Aunty Momi" as a dedicated person who lived politics. Former party chairman Richard Port said Lee was a "trailblazer" who led the way for other women, such as Congresswoman Patsy Mink and Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono. "What I will remember most is the time, energy and talent she provided on a day-to-day basis as a volunteer in the party," Port said. "It was very common for her to work eight, 10, 12 hours a day as a volunteer, keeping books, writing checks and performing any service that the party requested." Port said Lee also was well-known and respected nationally. "I’ve been a delegate to four Democratic National Conventions, and at every convention, people from all of the other states would gravitate toward her," he said. "It was always surprising to see how many people knew her from other states."

Naomi "Sister" Correa has been a party member for 50 years, and she got to know Lee when the two were delegates to the 1972 national convention in Miami.

"It’s a loss, but she left so much," Correa said. "Her legacy was to see that the people and the women had a fair choice in life." Lee is survived by sons, Philip Nathan and Michael; daughters, Geraldine Giffin and Phyliss; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Momi Pearl Minn Lee, longtime Democratic Party leader and former state House member, died Wednesday June 28, 2000. Friends may call beginning at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter and Paul Church. Mate‘ Ng Lent, legendary Tahitian dancer at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel’s Monarch Room in the 1950s and ’60s, died Saturday June 24, 2000 after a battle with lung cancer. She was 61. Family and friends described her as someone who "was always active and always dedicated to helping others out" through her work with children.For 14 years, Lent was involved with the Honolulu Boy Choir as a parent, volunteer counselor and staff senior counselor. Known as "Aunty Mate‘" to the boys, she never failed to make everyone feel special, said her husband, Stephen Lent. "It became a real bonding experience for her to work with them," Lent said. "It excited her to see these little kids become bigger throughout the years." She worked with the choir at every rehearsal twice a week, instilling pride, confidence and discipline, said Blake Nuibe, executive director of the choir. "She was so very compassionate, she had that unique way of dealing with the boys," said Nuibe. "She could be stern, but in this way, only she excelled at - she’d grab the boy, hug him, cry with him." Lent first became involved with the Boy Choir because of her son, Jason Lent. Even after Jason left the choir, she stayed with the group, becoming the longest-working member in the choir. "She was active in everything I did," said Jason. "She was a mother to all the boys in the group. Whatever we needed she was always there." Lent also was a past president of the local chapter of the American Guild of Variety Artists and a current member of the Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Artists.

"After she stepped down in December because of her illness, there was a definite void here," Nuibe said. "The organization will not be the same. She was a very fun, a very enjoyable person to be around." When asked what he’ll miss most about his mom, Jason said, "Just being able to call her up and talk to her. She always had an answer to all of my questions." Lent is survived by her husband, Stephen Lent; daughter, Desiree Philip Ng; sons, Alden and Jason Ng; and three grandchildren. Maurice "Moe" Lerner, considered the "Aloha Mayor of Hale‘iwa," died Thursday of metastatic prostate cancer. He was 54. Lerner was one of four owners of Hale‘iwa Joe’s Seafood Grill, which is known for its community service. He had been with the restaurant since it opened in March 1998. Alissa Kimura said her father, who worked as the daytime manager, was the "spirit of the restaurant." "He knows everybody and anybody," she said, adding her father brought "music to the community and community bonds."

Born July 5, 1945, in Los Angeles, Lerner was diagnosed with cancer two years ago. She said he worked until three months ago. Some of Lerner’s favorite pastimes included surfing and hanging out at the lifeguard tower at ‘Ehukai Beach Park. Lerner’s sons, Abe and Adam, are lifeguards. Lerner also is survived by wife Jan; daughter Alizabeth; grandsons Braden and Baron Kimura; brother Michael; sister Ann Egan; aunt Jeri Fitzgerald; and stepmother Lorraine. Abner Fisher Levin, a retired record store manager and music historian, died Friday at Hale Anuenue Center following a long illness. He was 88. Levin made his mark as the manager of the original Sam Goody’s in New York City, once known as the world’s largest record store. A national magazine once described him as having "the sharpest ears in America." One of his children is state Sen. Andy Levin (D-Puna, Ka‘u, South Kona). Abner Levin served as editor of "The Long Player," a catalog of music records. He also was author of "The Disc Book," a guide to recorded music. After moving to Hilo from New York, he served as president of the Hawaii Island Concert Society. He is survived by his wife, Flora; sons Andy and Robert; and daughter Jo. There will be no funeral.

Lynn Gehler Levinson, wife of Hawaii Supreme Court Associate Justice Steven Levinson, died Friday, Jan 21, 2000 at the Queen's MedicalCenter after a long illness. She was 53. Levinson, an English teacher at Punahou High School, was head coach of the school's speech and debate team for 13 years and led two teams from the school to national finals. Justice Levinson said yesterday that she was his beloved life companion for more than 36 years, and "the best parent I've ever seen. I have difficulty remembering having lived without her. I will never live without her. A Punahou colleague, creative writing teacher Liz Foster, described Lynn Levinson as a woman "who was sort of ambushed by laughter all the time," even during the past year of illness. Levinson, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, received her undergraduate degree from Indiana University. She earned a master's degree in guidance counseling at the University of Cincinnati. Before joining the Punahou faculty in 1985, Levinson taught at Stevenson Intermediate School. Levinson is survived by her husband;

daughter, Jennifer of San Francisco; son, Joshua of Los Angeles; and sisters, Gloria Frankel of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Valerie Gehler of Cincinnati. Mary Lou Livingston, ex-police commissioner. Former Honolulu Police Commissioner Mary Lou Livingston died Friday at her Manoa home following a battle with cancer. She was 76. She is described by family and friends as a "fantastic woman with a terrific sense of humor," and was a popular figure at the University of Oklahoma, where she worked as a director of student activities, and at the University of Hawai‘i, where she was a program counselor. In 1988, Livingston was appointed to the Honolulu Police Commission by then-Mayor Frank Fasi, and was reappointed to a second term in 1994. Livingston chaired the police commission in 1992 and was a member of the first graduating class of the Citizens Police Academy in 1994.She is survived by her husband, Gilbert Livingston; sons, Gilbert Jr. and Lance; daughter, Lisa; and three grandchildren.

Robert Loew dies in California car crash. Longtime Hawai‘i broadcasting executive Robert M. Loew died in a traffic accident Nov. 22, 2000 in California. He was 54.

Loew’s companion, Dr. Lisa Bird, also died in the accident. Loew was a Hawai‘i resident for nearly 30 years and recently moved to the Las Vegas area. Friends and former colleagues were shocked by the news of Loew’s death. "During the 10-plus years I worked with Bob I found him to be a visionary, always open to new ideas and above all, a man with high integrity," said veteran Hawai‘i broadcaster Don Robbs. Loew, who was born in Los Angeles, graduated from the University of California with an engineering degree. He later received his master’s in business administration at Stanford University.

In the 1970s, Loew joined Bob Berger at KHVH radio and was involved in the planning and senior management for Berger’s growing radio holdings. Loew later left the Berger organization and formed Loew Broadcasting. He acquired KDEO radio and other stations, which he recently sold. "I was so proud to have him become such a key man in our companies and enjoyed sending him off on his own," Berger said. "I always knew he’d do better than I would, and he did." Loew was a member of the Hawai‘i Association of Broadcasters, United Jewish Fund of Hawai‘i, West Pearl Harbor Rotary Club, Leeward YMCA and the Waipahu Business Association. He also served as president of the Stanford Business School Alumni Association of Hawai‘i and was a longtime member of O‘ahu Country Club. He was the incoming president of the Las Vegas South Sunset Rotary Club. Loew is survived by his children, Adam, Stephen and Rebecca; brother, David; sisters, Linda, and Cathy Weiner; and father, Marcus. A memorial service will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at O‘ahu Country Club. Kan Jung Luke, self-made millionaire banker, industrialist, real estate entrepreneur and teacher, died Saturday Nov 11, 2000 in Honolulu. He was 86. He was chairman of the board of Hawaii National Bancshares, Inc., founder and chairman emeritus of Hawaii National Bank, and a member of numerous business, military, community and civic groups. Luke was born in North Kohala, the youngest of 13 children of Chinese immigrants. He worked in his parents' grocery store and bakery as a youth, leaving the Big Island to attend St. Louis School in Honolulu. He said in interviews over the years that he knew he would have to work hard to get ahead. "The United States is a place where a fellow can start with nothing and make a success of himself," he said. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Hawaii in 1936 and an MBA from the Harvard School of Business in 1938. He was a major in the U.S. Army from 1942-46, then opened a bookkeeping office in Honolulu and began lecturing part time at UH. He became known as Hawaii's millionaire schoolteacher, teaching corporation finance and business administration for 22 years. His first major purchase was a restaurant and bar across from the Army-Navy YMCA in downtown Honolulu in 1940. In 1956, Luke and partner Clarence T.C. Ching pulled off what has been called

one of the greatest coups in the history of Hawaii land sales. They bought the 233-acre Damon Tract in the airport area for $4.5 million with just $100,000 down. The purchase stirred controversy, with some protests that Luke stole the tract out from under the Hawaiian Aeronautics Commission. By then, Luke and his partners already owned other property, including in Waikiki, and he continued to build his real estate holdings. But he still taught, telling his students to "analyze" and "never be a conformist." The most important ingredients for success, he said, are imagination and willingness to work. Although he called himself a public accountant, his interests were far more reaching. He created Loyalty Associates, a real estate investment partnership, and Loyalty Investments, then co-founded Loyalty Enterprises, a management servicing company. He also co-founded Loyalty Development Co. Ltd. and Moanalua Terrace Associates, and helped to organize the International Development Co. Luke also supported education, including establishing the Luke Center for Chinese Studies at Punahou School, the Luke Chair of International Finance and Banking at UH and a student center at St. Louis School. For relaxation he enjoyed photography, power tools, working with his hands and playing poker. Survivors include his wife, Beatrice; son, Warren K.K. Luke; daughters, Loretta Luke Yajima, Sharlene Luke Mau and Janice M.T. Luke Loo; and 13 grandchildren.
