*WeightsWe tell it like it is at Robens so we quote two weights with our tents. The maximum (max) weight is that of the whole tent complete with everything - carry bag, guylines, all pegs, fabric patches and pole repair kit. Where appropriate, the max weight will also include the living area groundsheet plus the poles and guylines needed to turn doorways into porches. The minimum (min) weight is the stripped down version without extras and guylines and the smallest number of pegs needed to pitch the tent.

Triangle guying pointsReinforced guying points have a triangular design to spread the load taken by the flysheet in strong winds. The reflective loops for guyline attachment make them far easier to spot in a headlamp beam at night in bad weather.

Attention to detail to achieve lighter weight without compromising performance is evident throughout. New for 2012 is environmentally-friendly anodised DAC poles and light weight DAC aluminium pegs.

High performance HydroTex® XTL is an outstanding, strong, hardwearing ripstop fabric that guarantees performance in the most demanding conditions faced by outdoor adventurers. Developed further for 2012 with an even lighter 20denier yarn, the outside of the fabric has a superb silicone coating that shrugs off the elements whilst the inside is coated with polyure-thane for durable waterproof performance and the fa-cility for seams to be sealed with reliable heat-taping. The combination of advanced coating technology and modern manufacturing ensures we can offer the light-est great value tents possible.

Protecting the environmentWe use DAC Green Anodizing poles for our Xtra Lite tents. These poles are produced in an environmen-tally safe and responsible process, without nitric or phosphoric acid normally associated with the anodizing process. Water consumption is greatly reduced by rinsing with recycled water. We highlight these environmentally friendly poles as DAC GA in our specification panels.

Typhon is a performance development of the classic ridge style that delivers stability, durability and comfort for two in a lightweight quali-ty package. Quickly pitched flysheet first or as one, the hooped main pole with reliable Twist Clip hooks and shorter twin end poles allow plenty of room inside even in bad weather with storage under the flysheet. The durable ripstop flysheet fabric copes easily with harsh treatment in demanding conditions with the tapered shape shedding the worst that wind and rain can throw at it and ventilation assured by rainproof panels and mesh door (backed by a fabric lining). Clamcleat sliders on the guylines ensure easy fast adjustment of the neat Storm Guard system to ensure stability whatever the weather.

Heros sleeps two in comfort with easy access via the wide door. The tent’s flexible poles and tapered ridge offer great living space, stability and easy pitching. The ridge pole is almost vertical at the rear to maintain height and the front pole slopes backwards for extra stability. Mercury has the option of using walking poles (not supplied) as sup-port for the main tent and the sheltered porch extension with side panels. With a central anodised pole (supplied, a walking pole can be used to trim weight further), four short attached corner poles and reflective guylines with Clamcleat sliders, pitching and adjustment is fast and easy. With its own pole, Fast Foot ’holsters’ at the flysheet apex and the inner tent front, hold it securely, the zipped door can be raised for cooking sheltered from the rain. The inner attaches to the fly at the guyline points to maximise internal space. It can be pitched flysheet first or as one and the flysheet can be used on its own as a group shelter.

Robens Lite tents – For 2012, the range features more dynamic tapered fronts and design detail plus the new Goshawk developed from the award-winning Green Hawk. The range has earned an enviable reputation by performing superbly and reliably during hard extended use in extreme conditions. Suitable for year-round use, the stable tunnel designs offer ample living space and low weight in tents to rely on. Adventurers have designs to choose from whether backpacking through mountain ranges, two wheeled touring or tackling climbing routes from a base camp. Car campers, too, will appreciate the fast easy pitching, small packed size and versatility of the range. Green Hawk won an OutDoor Industry Award for its ample living and storage space for two people allied to twin doorways, low weight, small packed size, stability, ventilation and easy pitching. New for 2012 is environmentally-friendly DAC poles.

The HydroTex® Ultralite coated fabric was deve-loped exclusively for Robens. We wanted a durable, resilient high performer that could be relied upon in demanding conditions and reduced overall tent weight. The material is a 30denier ripstop polyester fabric silicone coated on both sides to give a 3000 mm hydrostatic head waterproof rating. It also means it is super strong, has a better UV resistance than comparable nylon fabrics, is lighter and needs less re-tensioning after rain.

Whether on the move or as a base, the Goshawk is quick and easy to pitch using just two poles to deliver ample internal space and exceptional stability. Twin porches mean that each person can come and go without interfering with the other’s routine. One porch and doorway can be easily transformed into a sheltered porch extension with side panels, using walking poles (not included) as supports. The result is a well-sheltered area for cooking, watching wildlife and just chilling out. Rainproof vent on one side and on the porch extension side, there are twin air vents; through ventilation is not affected and the two entrances allow additional airflow. Reflecting the needs of fast-moving adventurers, weight is trimmed further by small adjust-ments to overall size.

Protecting the environmentWe use DAC Green Anodizing poles for our Star tents. These poles are produced in an environmentally safe and responsible process, without nitric or phosphoric acid normally associated with the anodizing process. Water consumption is greatly reduced by rinsing with recycled water. We highlight these environmentally friendly poles as DAC GA in our specification panels.

Warmth ratingsOur sleeping bags are tested to the official European Standard - EN13537 - that defines how to test, measure and label a sleeping bag, with the exception of those designed for military use or extreme temperatures. This standard is based on the use of a computer-controlled thermal mannequin to deter-mine the temperature limits of a sleeping bag; the mannequin is placed inside the sample bag in a temperature-controlled climate chamber. Tests and measurements are carried out based on the knowledge of how the human body reacts to changing temperatures during sleep to create the recom-mended temperature limits that appear on our sleeping bags. The standard is particularly useful in assessing the compara-tive performance of different bags.

This is a common way to hold synthetic insulation material in place for lightweight bags. The single layer is usually sandwiched between inner and outer fabrics with stitching running straight

through. The result is a succession of lines with reduced insu-lation around and along the bag where the fill is compressed. We tackle the problem by using loose outers and thus avoiding cold spots anywhere in the bag. Single layer is used in Xtra Lite and Trail Range.

At Robens, we prefer this met-hod for synthetic fills where more insulation is needed. Two layers of insulating fill are used together in an offset quilting pat-tern that eliminates any chance

of cold spots and maintains the depth of insulation to trap body heat. A loose outer shell rounds off top performance. Double layer is used in Trail Radar Range and Adventure Range.

Down needs room to loft fully and maximise its insulation po-tential. The internal box walls sewn to the inner and outer crea-te separate chambers to hold the down in place around your body

and offer enough space for expansion after compression in a stuff sack. Box construction is used in Lite and Outback Range.

Down grade – down achieves insulation by trapping air in its fluffy clusters; the depth is known as loft. 80/20 refers to the proportions of down, duck and small feathers used in the fill.

Fill power – measures the loft of down as it fills a given space after compression. Fill power and amount of fill work together to deliver a range of warmth and weight options. We highlight these measures as FP in our specification panels.
