VINITaVinita is the oldest incorporated

town on Oklahoma Route 66. It was also the first town in Okla-homa with electricity. Established in 1871, it was originally named Downingville.

The name was later changed to Vinita in honor of Vinnie Ream, the sculptress who created the life-sized statue of Lincoln at the U.S. Capitol.

The name change was spear-headed by Elias Boudinot, son of a famous Cherokee.

His father and 34 others sold the Cherokee ancestral lands to the U.S. government, resulting in the Cherokee Trail of Tears Mass Migration in 1838-9.

The sale of the land split the Cherokee Nation politically, and the streets in Vinita are named for prominent leaders and citizens on both sides of the dispute.

There are many surviving vin-tage Route 66 buildings here.

Signagegeneral information

You can follow the SH 66 signs all the way across Rogers County, but you also have the option of taking older alignments through Claremore (consult Jim Ross’ Oklahoma Route 66, published by Ghost Town Press, for details) and Catoosa (details follow).

Street names of Route 66 in towns (east to west)

Chelsea: 66/Layton turns into 66/Walnut.Foyil: Unnamed frontage road • Andy Payne Blvd.Claremore: 66/Lynn Riggs Blvd.Catoosa: old alignment: 66 • N. 225th E. Ave. • 66 • Ford • S. Cherokee • 193rd E. Ave.newer alignment: 66 • 193rd E. Ave.

Road FaCtS

to take the newer alignment through Catoosa:

eastbound: Take 66 at JCT of 193rd and I-44. Get in the left lane as quickly as possible and follow the signs carefully to stay on 66 instead of getting onto the I-44 turnpike.

Westbound: Stay on 66. Briefly merge with I-44, then take the 193rd E. Ave. exit and head south.

to take the old Hwy. 66 loop east of Catoosa:

eastbound: Turn right just before the Arrowood Trading Post. You might want to visit the Blue Whale first on current 66 before taking the older alignment behind Arrowood.

Westbound: After you cross the Verdigris bridge, you will see a gravel road to the left. Ignore it and look for the next left, which is paved and goes up a hill. There is no median crossover point there, so go about a tenth of a mile farther to the next crossover and make a U-turn to head back and pick up the old loop. Drive past the Arrowood and out onto current 66, then pull into the parking area by the Blue Whale.

did YOu knOW? The Will rogers Hotel in Claremore has been converted to apartments for retirees.
