Sealing Gravel Roads

We recently demonstrated our solution for dust control on a gravel road that connects to a large coal mine and hence carries a fair amount of traffic.

I would like to show this process as an alternative solution.

An important factor in this treatment process is that the gravel road is suitably prepared prior to treatment

We require a surface that is

1. well compacted 2. even and has no corrugations 3. loose material has been swept away 4. free of grass and weeds

Example of a well prepared road surface

In essence the treatment for dust control using our products consists of two processes being Pre wetting and Sealing

1. Pre wetting of the prepared road surface with DustSuppresSOR. This will ensure that our main product, RoadSeaLOR, will be absorbed well into the road surface and not just remain as a surface layer.

Ideally the standard recommended dosage rate of DustSuppresSOR is 1 litre per 2000 litres of water applied at 1 litre per square metre. Therefore in order to treat say 1 kilometre of road being 1000 metres x 6 metres wide giving a Total of 6000 square metres we will need 3 litres of DustSuppresSOR. It is safe to assume that a 20 litre drum will be able to treat between 5 - 6 kilometres of road.

We recommend that it is always best to ensure a good wetting application before sealing as this is vital to the success of the process. Therefore using a litre or two more DustSuppresSOR to ensure good penetration is often recommended as well as applying the RoadSeaLOR as soon as possible after the pre wet.

Wetting the road with a single pass on either side

2. Sealing the pre wetted road surface with RoadSeaLOR.

We recommend two passes with the RoadSeaLOR again to ensure good penetration results. We recommend a 10% dilution per pass and two passes will result in a total of 20% of product being applied. Ideally the standard recommended dosage rate of RoadSeaLOR is 10 litre per 1000 litres of water applied at 1 litre per square metre. Therefore in order to treat say 1 kilometre of road being 1000 metres x 6 metres wide giving a total of 6000 square metres we will need 1200 litres of RoadSeaLOR. This being sufficient for 2

x 10% applications.

Application rates may vary depending on the preparation of the road surface, soil type, traffic volumes and traffic type etc.

The lifespan of the treated road surface will depend on many variables including the preparation of the road surface, soil type, traffic volumes and traffic type etc. Straight road sections will have a longer lifespan whilst greater wear and tear will occur on curves and corners and sections where heaving breaking takes place. However the product is easy to reapply in these areas without having to rework the road surface. We would expect a lifespan of between 2 to 5 years and in many cases we have exceeded this time frame. Please note that the quoted calculations are recommended dosage rates based on the suitable preparation of the road surface and are a guideline only. Local conditions may dictate that these rates will need to be adjusted in order to produce effective results. This is important.
