Man’slargestconvening.Tensofthousandsmoregotothe90BurningManregional
eventsheldaroundtheworld,andhundredsofthousandsparticipateineventsand
activitiesinspiredbyBurningMan.ThenonprofitBurningManProjectsupports
programslikeFlyRanch,whichisbecomingayear-roundplatformfortheingenuityof
theBurningMancommunity,andBurnersWithoutBorders,whosechaptersorganize
reliefprojectsandworktomakecommunitiesmoreresilient.Allinall,it’sfairtosay
BurningManhasaffectedmillionsofpeople.
Throughallofthis,westrivetorespecttheenvironmentandarecommittedtovalues
suchasPackitInPackItOutandLeaveNoTrace.TheLNTPrincipledescribesour
expectationsforourselvesandtheenvironment:
TheBurningMancommunityrespectstheenvironment.Wearecommittedtoleavingnophysicaltraceofouractivitieswhereverwegather.Wecleanupafterourselvesandendeavor,wheneverpossible,toleavesuchplacesinabetterstatethanwhenwefoundthem.
BlackRockCityisthelargest“LeaveNoTrace”eventintheworld.Asanoutputfrom
ourculturalcommitment,atourgatheringsyou’lltypicallyfindrecycling,composting,
andrenewableenergy.Throughcoordinatedplanning,participantshavereduced
trafficfootprintwithbussesandcarpools.Participantsmanagetheirowntrashand
carrytheirowncups.Burnersgotogreatlengthstominimizetheirimpactafterevents
locallyandaroundtheworld.Butdespiteourbestintentions,BurningManevents,
offices,andproperties,liketherestofmodernsociety,produceemissions,contributeto
landfills,causepollution,andsometimesnegativelyimpactthelandandthe
environment.

We’reinthemidstofaglobalclimatecrisis.TheUnitedNationsestimatesthatamillion
speciesareatriskofextinction.TheUnitedStatesGeologicalSurveypredictsan
increaseinnaturaldisasters.HalfthecoralintheGreatBarrierReefhasdiedsince
2016.
NASA,theUN,andothershaveconcludedthatclimatechangeisrealandthathuman
activitiesarethemaincause.Thisisnotanopenquestion.A2004paperinScience
notedthat“allmajorscientificbodiesintheUnitedStateswhosemembers’expertise
bearsdirectlyonthematterhaveissuedsimilarstatements.”
AccordingtotheUNIntergovernmentalPanelonClimateChange,wehavejust12
yearstomakesubstantialchangestoourwayoflifeortheglobaltemperaturewillrise
abovethe1.5°C(2.7°F)levelofwarmingtheplanetcansustain.Toavoidthedisastrous
ecologicalconsequencesofreaching2°C(3.6˚F)ofwarmingwewillneedtogetnet-
zerogreenhousegasemissionsbythemiddleofthecentury.Thiswillrequireaswift
andmassivecutinemissions.

Facedwiththerealandtimelyrisksclimatechangepresentsforourplanet,wehavea
responsibilitytoact.Giventheglobalreach,scale,anduniquecapacityoftheBurning
Mancommunity,wecouldbeachange-maker.Evenifwecan’tsolvetheproblem
globally,orwefailinourefforts,wehavetotry.Inthismomentofcrisisitisn’tenough
tobecarbonneutralorsustainable.Weneedtodomore.So,we’resettinganambitious
visionforrevolutionizingourcommunityandouroperations.Thescopeofthe
environmentalsustainabilityroadmapbelowismassive.Itwillonlyworkwitha
combinedeffortonallfrontsfromeveryone.
Whatfollowsarefivesectionsthatoutlineadraftsustainabilityplan.Itisimportantto
saywhatthisdocumentisandisnot.Itismeanttosetthedirectionforthecommunity
anditsimpactontheenvironment.Itisnotafinalplan.Itisnotafinitetimeline.Yet.

2)ThreeGoalsAlthoughBurningManmakeseveryefforttolessenourimpactontheenvironment,we
seeseveralcriticalopportunitiestoimprove.Asis,it’senormouslychallengingtobean
ecologicallyresponsibleperson,muchlessaneventorcity.Mostmunicipalitiesuse
landfills.Wastefiltrationsystemsoftenexpelpollutantsintowaterways.Foodand
wateraresourcedusingdestructivemeans.Manygoodsaremanufacturedtobethrown
away.Transportationisbasedonfossilfuel.Infrastructureusesbadmaterials.
Events,cities,andprojectsoftennegativelyimpacttheearth.Whenpeopletravel,build,
andgather,weconsumeresources,createemissions,andaccelerateerosion,eachof
whichcancontributetodesertification.
Wecan’tjustalterourcurrentsystem;weneedtocreateanewone.Overthenextfew
yearswe’llbuildcapacity,leveragetheresourcesofourcommunity,andattemptto
createaparadigmshift.Weareusingmeasurablegoalsthatfitintheform:“movex
fromytoz.”Thisframeworkallowsustotrackprogressanddetermineifwehave

succeeded.A10-yeartimelineallowsforanevolvingexperimentalprocess,ratherthan
attemptinganovernightrevolution.Wemayadjustcourseandmodifygoalsaswe
learn,butthisisthedirectionwe’reheading.
1)NoMatterOutofPlace.Handlewasteecologically.(2–4years)Ourgoalistoeliminateallnon-sustainablewastestreamsfromBurningManevents
andoperations.Whenweco-creategatheringsanywhereintheworld,weshould
observeLeaveNoTraceaswepreparefortheevent,duringtheevent,ontheway
home,andinthewayweultimatelydisposeofourwaste.ThisisRadicalSelf-Reliance
andCivicResponsibility.Weneedtoencouragebothupstreamanddownstream
solutionstomakelandfillsobsolete.Downstream,thismayinvolvecontinuingtobuild
facilities,suchaswaste-to-energyorrecycling.Upstream,ifwedon’tbuyorbringstuff
toeventsthatwouldeventuallybecometrashorgointoalandfill,wewillsolvethis
issue.Putsimply:buyinglessandbuyingmorecarefullywillmakeforlesswaste.
2)BeRegenerative.Createanetpositiveecologicalandenvironmentalimpact.(5–8years)BurningMancanprototypesolutionsthatenableourspeciestobecomearegenerative
forcefortheplanet.Bytheendofthenextdecade,weaimforittobebetterforthe
ecologyofEarthforBurningMantoexistthantonotexist.Thereisn’tamodelfor
regeneration.We’llinvolveawidescopeofexpertsaswemeasureanddefinethisgoal.
3)BeCarbonNegative.Removemorecarbonfromtheenvironmentthanweputintoit.(8+years)Mitigatinggreenhousegasemissionsandbeingregenerativewillnotbeenoughto
addressclimatechange.Creatingnegativeemissionsthroughcarbondrawdownisthe
thirdpillarofasustainablecarboncycle.ThecarbonfootprintforBlackRockCityis
likelyaround100Ktons.ThisisbasedonestimatesfromBlackRockLabsscalingthe
2007CoolingManmodeltoconsidercurrentpopulation.Becomingcarbonnegativein
thenext10yearsisanambitiousstretchgoal.Traditionaloffsetsandrenewables
deploymentcannotbethesolestrategy.Thereisanemergingconstellationof
drawdowntechniques(e.g.,plantingmangroves,removingcarbon-dioxidefromthe
air,sequesteringcarboninrocks).Thetechnologyisrapidlyscalingastheproduction
costsforfacilitiesanddevelopmentfallsexponentially.Weintendtousemultiple
projectsandapproachestoprototypesolutionstowardsthisgoal.

Thereisnosilverbulletorquickfix.Transitioningtosustainableoffices,events,and
propertymanagementwilltakeyears.Wecanlearnfromorganizationsthatarealready
sustainableintheirsupplychains,energy,manufacturing,waste,andmore.Asyoucan
seefromtheirsustainabilityreports,Apple,Shambala,andGooglearecarbonneutral
orheadingthere.TheBuddhistKingdomofBhutaniscarbonnegative.
1)MeasureandReduceImpacts,ConsiderOffsets,TestPilotProjects(1–2years)
Emissionsinventory.BlackRockLabswillbeleadinganemissionsinventoryover
thenextyear.Wewillneedtobeveryclearabouthowweusesustainabilitymetrics
andpossibleoffsets,astherearenumerousweakandmisguidedemissionsand
offsetinventoriesintheworld.Theframeworkforquantifyingnegativeemissions
willbekey.Forexample:howwillwecountplantingtreestowardscarbon
sequestration?Howaboutsellingsolartoacommunitythatwouldotherwiseusea
naturalgaspeakerplant?Howaboutsubsidizingtheuseofregenerative
agriculturalpracticesthatavoidtheuseofsyntheticfertilizer?
Layingthegroundwork.Wewillbegintoworkwithstaff,artists,camps,
participants,outsideserviceproviders,andinfrastructurevendorstosustainably
manageourwaste,pollution,andresources.Wewillhostaseriesofsustainability
gatheringstokickthisoffwiththecommunityinBlackRockCity,atFlyRanch,and
elsewhere.WewillorienttheFlyRanchdesignchallengearoundthesegoals.We
willsupportdecentralizedteamsandtheeffortsofgreencampsandprojects.
2)OffsetEmissionsbyPurchasingCredits(2–3years)Effectiveoffsets.Aneffectiveoffsetprogrammustsequesteratmosphericcarbon
andconsidertheslowcarbonpool.Carbontakesmillionsofyearstocyclebetween
rocks,soil,ocean,andatmosphere.Offsetscanbepartofthesolution,butwillnot
beallofthesolution.We’veexperimentedwithstandardoffsetsbefore.In2017
and2018BurningManProjectpromotedacarbonoffsetprogramledbyBlackRock
LabsandIDEATE.Kiwiburnusesoffsets.
Stimulatingamarket.Offsetshavenobleaspirationsbutcanbeconfusing,though
someorganizationsdooffsetsatscale.Asfarasweknow,rightnowthereisn’tan
effectiveoffsetwecouldbuyintothatissufficientforourscope.Assolutions
emergewewillidentifyandhighlightresourcesandproducersbasedontheirbest
practices.Byidentifyingthisasourgoalandidentifyingourscope,wehopea
marketoflegitimateoffsetswillemerge.BlackRockLabshasidentifiedthesefour

criteria:
-Legitimate.Mustbepermanent,surplus(additional),andenforceable.
-Co-benefits.E.g.,reforestationinvolvescarbon,habitat,andwater.
-Scalable.Offsetscanbescaledtomeetdemand.
-Impactful.Offsetsinfluenceotheroffsetproviderstobemoreinnovative.
Burnemissions.Burningartcreatesatmosphericpollution.Therearevaluable
lessonsinimpermanencethatcomewithcreatingandburningart.Wehaveto
acknowledgethatthereleaseoftheseemissionsisofconcern.Inadditionto
encouragingartiststoconsideralternativestoburningandtoimaginealifefortheir
workbeyondaspecificBurningManevent,weareputtingacallouttothe
communitytohelpusfindawaytomitigateemissions,andtobethoughtfuland
intentionalabouthow/when/whereandwhyweburnart.
3)BecomeRegenerative(4–10years)Multiprongedapproach.Inthisstagewewillworktoendourcontributionsto
landfillsandnon-regenerativesystems.Forexample,wecouldproducesolar,wind,
andgeothermalenergy.Wecouldproducewater.Throughhydroponics,
aquaponics,andaeroponicswecangrowfoodonthe3,800acresweownatFly
Ranchandonthe360acresBurningManProjectownsontheedgeofGerlach.The
mostimpactfulchangeswecanmakewillcomefromproducingourownpower,
endingtheuseoffossilfuels,andparticipatinginanoffsetprogramthatsequesters
atmosphericcarbon.Together,thesechangeswillallowustomovefrombeing
carbonpositivetobecomingcarbonneutral,withtheendgoalofbecomingcarbon
negative.
Timeline.Largersustainableinfrastructureprojectsthatinvolveindustrial-scale
facilities(e.g.,solar,recycling,water,wind,geothermal,etc.)willtakeafewyears
toplan,securepartnershipsandcapital,andgetpermits.Thenprobably2–4years
tobuild.Thisisindustry-standard.TheSolarEnergyIndustriesAssociation
benchmarkssixyearstobuildalargesolarfacility.Thenitwilllikelytakeafew
yearstointegratenewinfrastructurewithpowergridsandsystemsinBlackRock
City,FlyRanch,andcommunitiesinNorthernNevada.
Pilotsolarproject.AsafirsttestwecouldproducesolarpowerforGerlach,Black
RockCity,andforourproperties.Notonlydoesitaddresstheneedintheglobal
carboncycletokeepcarbonintheslowpool,itshowsthatBurningManProjectis
demonstratingitsdedicationtotheenvironmentbyfindingourownwaystooffset

ourcarbonuse.BlackRockLabshasdevelopedafeasibilitystudythatprovidesa
usefulframeofreference.We’dprobablyneed~20MWon~75acresforBlack
RockCity.Wecouldsellpowerandeliminatetheemissionsofnon-renewable
powerplantsandcountthatinouroffsets.Forexample,NVEnergyisseekingRFPs
forbuying330MWofrenewableenergy.Wewillcreateaplanthatprovides
directionforreplicatingthemodelforathemecamp,anevent,orforahome.
4)OpenIssuesThisdocumentismeanttobeastartingplace.Werecognizethattherearebroader
areasforfuturedevelopmentthatthisdocumentdoesn’taddress.
LeaveNoTraceApproach.Weneedtounderstandwhatthenextphilosophical
andpracticalframeworkforevaluatingemissionswillbe.Itwillbeimportantto
drawgeographicandemissionslinestogiveusasenseoffocusandconstraint.We
shouldn’tstartouttoodetailedandfailtoofferinspirationandvision.Wealsoneed
toconsidermaterialsandtheirlifecycle.Landfillsarebadandrecyclingisbroken.
Stainlesssteel,glass,andceramicsaresafe.Siliconeandotherplasticsorplastic
linedmetalsarenot.Weneedtomigratetoreusablematerialsandgenuinely
compostablewaste,not“compostable”itemsthatcanonlybetreatedinan
industrialfacility.WhileLNTisthehallmarksustainabilityPrinciple,there’sspace
forustobringalargercommunityintothisdialogueasweexaminematerialsand
LNTonalongertimeline.Wecanlearnandgainskillsaswedeterminenextsteps.
SystemsFramework.Consideringoverallsystemdynamicscouldleadtobroader
insightsandopportunities.Thismaybeamotivatingandengagingwaytogetbuy-
in.Forexample,awaste-to-energyfacilitycouldprovideameaningfulfractionof
totalbaseloadenergydemandforBlackRockCity.Orcampscouldfurther
coordinatethelogisticsoftransportationtoBlackRockCityingroups,and
eliminatevehicle-relatedemissionsthroughconsolidatedtransit,while
simultaneouslyreducingthefootprintofBlackRockCity,traffic,andlitter.
Ownership.Thisiscommunaleffort!LikethemodelofBlackRockCityitself,this
ismeanttobeacollaborationbetweentheorganizationandthecommunity.
BurningManProjecthasanopportunitytostepupbystatingourvaluesandgoals,
sharingwhatactionsandcommitmentswearetaking,andtheninvitingand
encouragingthecommunitytobepartofthesolution,andtohelpleadtheway
forward.Theorganizationisnotdictatingsomething;wearesettingthevisionand
invitingthecommunitytohelp.

Tensions.Therewillbeoperationalandphilosophicaltensions.Operationally,
peoplewantprojectstobehigh-quality,inexpensive,andfast.Inmostcasesonly
twoofthesearepossibleatthesametime,whichcanbefrustrating.Projectscanbe
fastandinexpensive,butnothigh-quality.Theycanbehigh-qualityand
inexpensive,buttakelonger.Oritcouldbehigh-qualityandfast,whichis
expensive.Speedwillbedifficultandmaycreatediscomfort,asinstitutionslike
BurningManProjectandpotentialcollaboratorsdonottendtomovequickly.
Philosophically,someofthesolutionstoourenvironmentalcrisismayfeelatodds
withthePrincipleofRadicalSelf-Reliance.Ifwe’reworkingtogetherasa
communitytosolveourproblems,whendoesRadicalSelf-Reliancemakewayfor
CommunalEffort?
5)ConclusionAtthetimeofthiswriting,theyearis2019.Climatechangeisreal,andthescientific
evidenceisirrefutable.Thisisnotapoliticalissue,thisisahumanissue.Yetthere
remainsatensionbetweenplanetarycitizenshipandindividualism,andirresponsible
capitalismcontinuestoincentivizeself-gratifyingconsumerism.Putplainly,selfishness
andgreedaredrivingthedeclineofournaturalworld.Meanwhile,inspiteofagrowing
awarenessoftheurgentneedtoaddresstheseissuesthroughcooperation,conflicting
interestsofgroupsandindividualscoupledwithalackofincentiveandclearlydefined
goalsleavestoomanypeopledoingnothing.
Withoutasubstantialefforttocometogetherandovercomethiscollectiveaction
problem,thingswillcontinueastheyare.Butthestatusquoisnolongeracceptable.
Thisproblemistoobigandtooimportanttonotaddress.
Achievingthegoalsoutlinedinthisroadmapwillrequireagreatdealoftime,effort,
andcapital.Butthestakesarethehighestthey’veeverbeenandwe’rerunningoutof
time.Twelveyearsfromnowwillbetoolate.Ifafewgoodactorsarecarbonneutral
whilebadactorscontinuetopollute,we’llcontinueonthepathtodestruction.Alarge
numberofcommunities,countries,andcompaniesneedtobenotjustsustainableor
carbonneutral.Wemustberegenerativeandcarbonnegative.

TheEarthistheonlyworldknownsofartoharborlife.Thereisnowhereelse,atleastinthenearfuture,towhichourspeciescouldmigrate.Visit,yes.Settle,notyet.Likeitornot,forthemomenttheEarthiswherewemakeourstand.
WecanandshouldleveragetheknowledgeandreachoftheBurningMancommunity
and10Principlestoproliferateandinspireotherstocreatetransformationintheirown
communities,organizations,andcountries.Thiswon’tworkasacentrally-planned,
slow,orclosedproject.Weneedtoworkquickly,openly,andfromtheinsideoutand
outsidein.Thiswillbeanopen-sourceprojectthatanyonecancontributetoand
replicate.It’suptoallofustohelpcreatethatshiftbysettinganexample,inspiringour
communitytotakeaction,andembracingenvironmentalsustainabilitypromptlyand
comprehensively.Thetechnologyisscaling,thedemandsignalisstrong,andtheglobal
warmingimperativeismorepressingthanever.Weinvitethecommunitytocontribute
ideasasweseektoleaveEarthinabetterplacethanwefoundit.
Thefutureofoursurvivalbegsusnottoaskhowcanweaffordtodothis,butrather,
howcanwenot?
