High demand or virgin polymershe use o polymer-modied asphalt and bitumen has been

increasing steeply or more than two decades. Pressure

on public road budgets has led to an intense ocus on

maintenance costs, and the marginal extra cost o using

polymer-modied asphalt and bitumen has proved to be

justied by huge savings on maintenance budgets.

Te superior properties o polymer-modied asphalt and

bitumen, e.g. the resistance to rutting and cracking, have

led to an increased consumption o virgin polymers like

    SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene).

However, the increased demand or these virgin polymers,

not only or road asphalt and bitumen, but also or other

industrial purposes, has led to generally much higher and

more volatile world market prices and unstable supplies.

Substitute virgin polymers with Road+It was thereore a major technological and economical

breakthrough when Road+ was launched as a green

alternative to virgin polymer modiers. Te main

component in Road+ is high quality rubber powder rom

Genan, which together with Vestenamer substitutes the

virgin polymers. In contrast to virgin polymers, supplies

and prices are secure and stable, and the avoidance o virgin

polymer production means considerable climate benets.

Far superior to earlier rubber asphaltsTe characteristics o Road+ cannot be compared

with those o earlier rubber asphalts. Te addition o

Vestenamer in the process developed by Evonik makes a

crucial diference, as it creates cross-linking between the

bitumen and the rubber particles and acts as a dispersant to

    orm a homogenous blend.

Te new generation o elastomer asphaltsProperties associated with resistance o rutting and cracking

equal or exceed those o virgin polymer modiers. Because

o the addition o Vestenamer, Road+ does not generate

the emissions commonly ound in earlier orms o rubber

asphalt, and it prevents migration o organic compounds

into the ground water. Road+ has superior dispersing

properties which make it easy to work with. It does not stick

to metal and equipment is easy to clean ater use.

Road+ is able to modiy all kinds o bitumen, regardless

o origin. Tis has proven to be a great advantage as the

quality o bitumen has become increasingly inconsistent.

    What is Road+?

Butadiene price development over the last ten years

Road+ is an elastomeric bitumen and asphalt modier

and is used according to a process patented by Evonik.

Ingredients are 100 parts o high quality rubber powder

rom Genan mixed with 4.5 parts o Vestenamer, a

semicrystalli ne polyoctenamer produced by Evonik.

Field experience and laboratory tests both show that as a

rule o thumb, a standard bitumen modied with 10%

Road+ perorms on the same level as a similar bitumen

modied by 4 % SBS. As a matter o act many o the

properties, e.g. the ability to resist rutting under high

    loads, are ar better.

Besides substituting SBS and other polymers, Road+ also

reduces the need or addition o bres.

High quality ingredientsIt is o paramount importance or the perormance o the

modied bitumen and asphalt that the rubber powder

being used is uniorm in size and chemical composition.

As the worlds largest manuacturer o rubber powder rom

scrap tyres, Genan has the technology to live up to these

    requirements.

Since Vestenamer is produced by Evonik, the worlds

premier company in specialty chemistry, the development

o Road+ has been strongly supported by their technical

    know-how.

Several million square metres o road have now been paved

with Road+ modied asphalt. Road+ is not only suitable

or the top layer, but also or the binder layer as well as

the base layer. Excellent results are documented in Stone

Mastic Asphalt, Asphalt Concrete and Noise Reducing

Asphalt and SAMI (stress absorbing membrane interlayer).

Road+ is suitable or all climates, cold as well as

tropical, and is able to resist large day/night temperature

    uctuations.

Noise reductionRoad+ modied asphalt is ideal or noise reduction

purposes, whatever the surace layers are made o, e.g.

Stone Mastic Asphalt, Asphalt Concrete, Porous Asphalt or

    special noise-reducing asphalt recipes.

A heavily tracked road in Kln (Cologne), Germany,

along the Rhine Riverside, was designated Baustelle des

Monats (construction site o the month) because o the

    dramatic reductions in noise.

    Where to use Road+

    How to use Road+

Road+ is available or direct use in the asphalt mixer (dry process) or or blending with the bitumen (wet process).

Road+ is exible to use. Te combination o various bitumen qualities and Road+ content opens up new and extensive

range o asphalt recipes. Depending on the exact properties required, you can design the optimal mix also when recycled

asphalt is used in the asphalt mix.

Compared to other polymer-modied asphalts, Road+ can be laid at lower temperatures. Tis increases the time window

or paving, saves energy and reduces emissions.

Because o the good workability, a Road+ modied asphalt is particularly well-suited or manual labour-intensive jobs, e.g.

roundabouts, curves and driveways, as well as or thin-layer asphalt.

Road+ can be used in all knownstandard types of bitumen and asphalt.

    ExecutiveSummary

RecyclabilityRoad+ asphalt is ully recyclable producing lower emissions

during the mixing process than normal recycled asphalt.

A study documenting the recyclability can be downloaded

    rom the Genan website www.genan.eu.

EmissionAn emission study has been carried out by the German

research institute, FABES, identiying critical compounds

during production in the hot mix plant as well as paving

in the eld. No emission o N nitrosamines was detected,

and the emission o volatile and semi-volatile compounds

was lower or Road+ modied asphalt compared to

conventional polymer-modied asphalt (PMB). A summary

o the study can be ound on www.genan.eu.

Lie Cycle AssessmentComprehensive and peer-reviewed lie cycle assessment

studies have shown signicant environmental benets

in areas like greenhouse gas emissions, acidication and

ossil uel demand i scrap tyres are recycled and used or

substitution o virgin materials instead o being incinerated.

Te greenhouse gas benet is minimum 1.7 tons o CO2

    per ton o Road+.

For more inormation about lie cycle assessment and

greenhouse gas savings, order Genans executive summaries

    or download them rom www.genan.eu.

Uniorm quality throughout the yearAs the rubber content in Road+ is produced rom scrap

tyres in large-scale plants with a stable input distribution

o the diferent kinds o tyres, the product quality stays

uniorm throughout the year. A study by a German asphalt

institute, which has tested the main properties o Road+

modied bitumen throughout the year, concluded that

Road+ is a consistent and uniorm product. A copy o the

report can be downloaded rom the Genan website.

Excellent resistance to rutting, cracking and agingComprehensive studies have compared Road+ modied

asphalt with corresponding c onventional polymer-

modied asphalts and ound it to be equal or even better

on properties like rutting, atigue resistance, cracking and

aging. In particular the orce ductility is ar greater than

in conventional polymer-modied asphalts, thus making

Road+ modied asphalt ideal or industrial sites which are

    subject to heavy loads.

Genan is the worlds largest recycler o scrap tyres with 3

large recycling plants in Germany (Oranienburg/Berlin,

Dorsten/NRW and Kammlach/Bayern), one in Denmark

and one in the USA. Te technology has been developed

since 1990 and the plants are highly sophisticated and

ully automated. Te tyres are recycled into their original

components: rubber, steel and textile. Te end products

are uniorm and clean and thereore very well suited or

high quality applications. Recent lie cycle assessment

studies have shown that signifcant environmental benefts

in areas like greenhouse gas emissions, acidifcation and

cumulative energy demand are achieved i scrap tyres are

recycled instead o incinerated or used or civil engineering
