Sewall Center for a 7:00 p.m. game Friday, November 9. The Colonials snapped a four-game losing streak in season openers with a victory over Coppin State last season and will be looking to start a winning streak as they take on Niagara for the first time in nearly two decades. Robert Morris advanced to the Northeast Con- ference semifinals for the seventh time in eight seasons last year. THE SERIES The Colonials are 2-3 all-time against the Purple Eagles as these two teams meet for the first time since 1993. Robert Morris won the first two meet- ings before Niagara reeled off three consecutive victories from 1990 through 1993. RMU is 0-2 at home against Niagara. MUSKET SHOTS • Junior forward Artemis Spanou was named to the All-NEC Preseason team • Spanou averaged a double-double last season and finished fourth nationally with 20 of them • Senior forward Anna Gailite is third all-time at RMU with 108 career blocks • RMU is opening the season at home for the third consecutive season • The Colonials are 13-23 all-time in season openers • Head coach Sal Buscaglia is 4-5 in season openers, and 4-3 in home openers, as RMU’s head coach • Robert Morris has made it to the NEC Tournament semifinals in seven of the last eight seasons • RMU is 92-22 (.807) at the Sewall Center since 2004-05, including 61-12 (.836) in NEC games RMU IN SEASON OPENERS Robert Morris opens the season at home for the third straight season and is 13-23 all-time in season openers. Not only has Coach Sal, as he is respectfully called, turned the program into a perennial NECpower,butanationallycompetitiveprogram.Theturnaroundcouldnothavebeenmoredramatic.Hisfirstsquad,in2003-04,posteda3-24record. Butgivenayeartorecruitandrebuild,his2004-05squadposteda20-10recordmarking
thethird-largestturnaroundinNCAAhistoryandgivingRMUitsfirst20-winseasonsincethe1983-84season.PerhapsthebiggestpieceintherecentresurgenceoftheprogramcametotheforefrontthatseasonintheformofSugeiryMonsac.ItalsoearnedBuscagliatheBrendaReillyNECCoachoftheYearaward,hisfirstoftwosuchhonorsduringhistenureatRMU. Monsacwasahighly-toutedrecruitsoughtoutbynumerousBCSlevelprograms,butwhenshecommittedtoCoachSalandRMU,itmarkedaturnaround.MonsacwasnamedthePlayeroftheYearin2004-05andwasatwo-timeAll-NECselectionwhowouldscore1,177pointsandgrab689reboundsinjust67careergames. Inhisfourthseason,theteamthathadgone1-26theseasonbeforehisarrival,BuscagliahadputtheColonialsintotheNCAATournamentforthefirsttimeinteamhistoryafteravictoryintheNortheastConferenceChampionshipin2007.Thatsquadfinishedwithaprogram-record24victoriestojusteightlossesandcompletedtheprogram’sresurrection. Oneyearlater,BuscagliaandhisColonialsrepeatedthefeat.Thistimearound,thesquadwasledbyrecord-settingthree-pointshootingofSadeLoganandthefirsttriple-doublesinteamhistorybyNECTournamentMVPChinataNesbit.CoachSalandhisstaffputinadribble-drivemotionoffense–oneofjusttwoteamsinwomen’sbasketballrunningtheoffense–totakeadvantageoftheteam’sathletically-giftedguards.LoganwouldtietheNCAArecordwith126three-pointersthatseasonandRMUposteda23-10record. Aftera13-18markinaninjury-marred2008-09season,the2009-10squadbouncedbackbysettingteamrecordsforregu-larseasonwins(22)andconferencevictories(17)whileleadingtheteamtoitsfirstoutrightNECRegularSeasonChampion-shipandaneventualPostseasonWNITTournament.TheappearancemarkedthefourthconsecutiveseasonRMUplayedinanationaltournament.AngelaPacewasthefeatureplayeronthatteambecomingthefirstplayerinleaguehistorytoearnbothPlayeroftheYearandDefensivePlayeroftheYear. CurrentjuniorArtemisSpanoumadehermarkin2010-11whenshebecamethefirstRobertMorrisplayertoearnNECRookieoftheYearhonors.Spanouandherteammatesposteda16-14markandledthesquadbacktotheNECsemifinals. Lastseason,theColonialswent18-14overalland11-6inleaguegames,returningfortheeighthtimeinthelastnineseasonstotheNortheastConferencesemifinals.TheteamearnedandinvitationandthetopseedinWomen’sBasketballInvitational.ItwasthefifthtimeinsixseasonsthatRobertMorriswasinvitedtoplayinanationaltournament. In34seasons,Buscagliahasputtogether11nationaltournamentrunsandhasfinishedwithawinningrecordin30ofthoseseasons.Hehascollectedover600careervictories,378ofthosecomingontheDivisionIlevel,whilepostinganoverallwin-ning percentage of .678. BeforeRobertMorris,BuscagliaspentfiveseasonsatManhattanCollege(1998-2003).InjusthissecondseasonatManhat-tan,BuscaglialedtheLadyJasperstoa17-winseason,markingthefifthmostvictoriesinschoolhistory,andwasrecognizedasthe24thmostimprovedteaminNCAADivisionI.InfiveseasonsatManhattan,Buscagliacompiledarecordof79-65,includ-inga20-10recordandNCAADivisionItournamentappearancein2002-03. Buscaglia’sManhattanteamreceivedvotesintheTop25in2002-03astheJaspersclaimedtheMetroAtlanticAthleticCon-ferenceregularseasonandtournamentchampionships.TheMAACchampionshipin2003wasthefirstleaguetitleinschoolhistory.Manhattan’s20-10overallrecordwasalsothebestinschoolhistory.In2001-02heguidedthejasperstoan18-10overallrecordandwasnamedtheCo-CoachoftheYearintheMetroAtlanticAthleticConference. ForeightseasonspriortohisarrivalatManhattan,BuscagliawasheadcoachoftheUniversityatBuffalofrom1990-98andledtheBullstofive20-wincampaigns.InitsfirstseasoninDivisionIcompetitionin1991-92,Buffalofinishedwitha23-6record,whichwasthe10thhighestwinningpercentage(.793)inDivisionIthatseason.TheBullswonEastCoastConferenceregular season titles in 1992, 1993 and 1994, as well as tournament championships in 1992 and 1994. In1994-95,BuffalomovedtotheMid-ContinentConferenceandBuscaglialedtheBullstoashareoftheMid-Conregular-seasontitlein1995andanappearanceintheconferencetournamentfinalsin1997.IneachofBuffalo’sfirstthreeseasonsinthe Mid-Con, Buscaglia led the Bulls to at least 20 wins. For his efforts at Buffalo, Buscaglia earned New York State Coach of the Year honors in 1992 and 1996. BuscagliastartedhiscoachingcareeratHilbertJuniorCollege,inHamburg,NewYork,wherein12seasonsfrom1977-90heamassedarecordof249-62.DuringhistenureatHilbert,histeamscollected93straightleaguewins,eightstraightRegionTournamentChampionships(1982-90),eightstraightregular season conference championships (1982-90) and eightstraightNationalTournamentappearances(1982-90).In1988-89histeamfinishedintheeliteeight.CoachSalisamemberoftheHilbertCollegeHallofFame. AnativeofBuffalo,NewYork,Buscagliaisa1976graduate of Canisius with a Bachelor of Science Degree in businessandaccountingandin1989earnedaMaster’sDegree in physical education, also from Canisius. In 1980, BuscagliareceivedaMaster’sDegreeinbusinesseducationfromtheStateUniversityofNewYorkCollegeatBuffalo.
