Level 9 studio with Leanne Zilka & Simon Whibley Turangawaewae or a place to stand is a project for Marae Melbourne. A marae is considered as sacred civic structure for Maori people. As it never has existed outside New Zealand, this project is meant to be used by all, not belong to specific iwi or tribe. Series of testing and iterations were made - and later combined - to produce a congregated idea of what marae could be in 'iwi-less' context

WEEK 4NEITHER CONTEMPORARY NOR TRADITIONAL

Reacting to the architectural and decorative forms of the Marae (such as the Wharenui) through design operations that manipulate these forms. Considering the relationships between the traditional object and acontemporary container. Investigate the traditional Wharenui and its forms, scale, functions, interior and decorative elements. Elements of a marae such as ribs, hands and head are reinterpreted using various design principles.
