Solomon cady Hollister was born in Crystal Falls, Michigan on 4 August 1891. He began his studies at Washington State College and continued at the University of Wisconsin, where he received the B.S. in civil Engineering in 1916 and the C.E. in 1932. He also held honorary degrees from Stevens Institute of Technology, the University of wisconsin, Purdue, and Lehigh. He served as an instructor in mechanics at the University of Illinois in 1916 and was a research engineer for the Corrugated Bar company of Buffalo, New York in 1917. During World War I, he was Chief Design Engineer and head of the Research Branch of the Concrete Ship section of the United States Shipping Board. In this capacity he supervised the construction of the first practical seagoing concrete ships and barges, the design of which was used for over one hundred ships deployed during World War II.
Throughout the 19205, Hollister was a consulting engineer in Philadelphia, and also served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Structural Division of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The design of a skew-arch bridge in Chester, pennsylvania won him the Wason Research Medal in 1929. In 1930 he became Professor of Structural Engineering and Assistant Director of the Materials Testing Laboratory at Purdue. There he conducted research on transit-mixed concrete and developed the photoelastic methods of stress analysis that became the basis of modern concrete mixing specifications. From 1932-36 he served as consultant to the Babcock and wilcox Company on the thirty-footdiameter welded penstocks at Hoover Dam, which are perhaps the principal expression of his outstanding accomplishment in the field of civil engineering. For Babcock and wilcox he was also a consultant on pressure vessels and atomic reactor vessels.
In 1934 Cornell University appointed him Director of the School of Civil Engineering; in 1937 he was elected Dean of the College of Engineering. As Dean, he conceived and developed the university's new engineering campus of ten buildings, changed the curriculum, inaugurated a Five-Year undergraduate engineering degree program (1946-64), increased the size and quality of the faculty and the student body, revitalized the College's research efforts, and negotiated the gift of the Curtiss-Wright Research Laboratory to Cornell and supervised its transfer to the university. In 1946-47 he was also a Vice-President of Cornell. In 1959, he retired from the deanship and became a trustee of the university; that same year, Hollister Hall was dedicated and named in his honor.
Hollister served as a consultant to many corporations, including Firestone, Babcock and Wilcox Company, and John Wiley
ii
and Sons, and was elected to the Board of Directors of the Raymond Concrete Pile Company (later Raymond International). He wrote numerous technological articles, contributed to handbooks, and published widely in the field of engineering.
Hollister was a foremost advocate of strengthening the engineering profession by the advancement of engineering education and served as president of the American society for Engineering Education in 1951-52. He chaired the Education Committee of the Engineers' Council For Professional Development and served on various commissions and committees concerned with the improvement of the profession. For this work he was awarded the Lamme Medal in 1952.
Throughout the 1950s, Hollister served on several commissions and boards, including the Hoover Commission on the Organization of the Executive Branch of the Federal Government, the Advisory Council of the united States Signal Corps, the Board of Consultants on Isthmian Canal Studies, and the National Academy of sciences - National Research Council Committee for the Study of Africa South of the Sahara.
Throughout his career, Hollister was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, served as a regional director, and was elected to a life membership. Other notable professional technical societies and organizations of which he was a member include the Column Research Council, the American society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Society for Testing Materials, and the American Concrete Institute.
Hollister's varied avocations included photography, painting, and sculpture. He also patented an innovative athletic shoe. As a Trustee and past President of the paleontological Research Institute and as a longtime collector of sea shells, Hollister contributed many scientific papers to the literature of this field, publishing in 1958 a monograph on the two genera of fossil shellS he had classified.
Hollister died in Ithaca, New York, in 1982.
iii
Provenance
Hollister's files of his work prior to coming to Cornell (Series I), as Director of the School of Engineering from 1935 to 1937 (series II), and as Dean of the college of Engineering from 1937 to 1959 (Series III), arrived in the Department of ManUscripts and University Archives from the Dean's Office in Carpenter Hall in 1982. Some additional material arrived between 1983 and 1987 and was inter filed within Series I, II, and III. Blueprints, tape recordings, and other forms of material were removed during processing and became parts of Series V. Dean Hollister's personal papers (Series IV) arrived in 1982 from his office in Hollister Hall and in 1984 from his home.
The papers have been processed into four series which reflect major periods in Hollister's life, and one series containing blueprints and visual materials.
Removed from the collection were five boxes of student grade and course cards, books which were distributed to other departments, and a pair of football shoes of Hollister's design which were transferred to the Department of Athletics.
