Reginald Murray ‘RM’ Williams AO CMG

1908-2003

In the late 1920s, RM signed on as a camel boy with the missionary explorer, William Wade, in his treks across Australia’s central western deserts. During this time RM learned valuable bush lore and survival skills from Aboriginal people and honed his stock-handling and bushcraft skills from the stockmen of the desert-fringe cattle stations.

The onset of the Great Depression found RM in the Gammon Ranges of South Australia with his young family, barely making a living digging wells.

During this time he met an itinerant saddler named Dollar Mick. A self-taught genius in leatherworking, Dollar Mick passed on his skills to the 24-year-old RM who made and sold his first pair of riding boots for 20 shillings to a man from Hiltaba Station whose name he couldn’t remember.

With boot sales to the first unknown buyer and cattle king Sir Sidney Kidman under his belt, RM set up his first factory in 1932 in an iron woolshed behind his father’s house at 5 Percy Street, Prospect (now the R.M.Williams Museum).

With no capital and little help, he built up a team of dedicated craftsmen and took out advertisements in the rural press that asked customers for cash with their orders.

Over the following decades, RM developed his business, diversifying into bush saddlery, equipment and the company’s trademark moleskins, jeans and bush shirts.

From these humble beginnings in 1932, R.M.Williams has expanded across the globe with more than 50 retail stores. Although international, R.M.Williams stays true to our founder’s origins and our boots are still made by hand in Australia, using more than 70 hand-held processes to reach completion.

R.M.Williams has been proudly outfitting Australians in quality footwear, clothing and accessories for more than 80 years.

R.M.Williams is designing, manufacturing and selling more Australian made product than ever before. Our production facility in Salisbury, Adelaide is at full capacity and busier than it has ever been.

R.M.Williams employs over 600 people within Australia and throughout the world.

The number of R.M.Williams stores and stockists in Australia and overseas continues to grow with more than 900 stockists now carrying R.M.Williams products.

Pull-on woven tugs firmly stitched between front and back heel lining provide ease in getting the boot on.

GOODYEAR WELT SOLE BOOTSThe Goodyear Welt sole is incorporated into R.M.Williams’ most popular dress boots. The cork filler increases comfort and adds insulation against extreme temperatures, ensuring the wearer remains comfortable during cold or hot conditions. The welt strip is stitched to the upper using a hot wax dipped thread for durability and strength. A granulated corkalene filler offers increased cushioning between the insole and outer sole.

SCREWED SOLE BOOTSR.M.Williams is one of only a handful of boot makers worldwide that still use brass screws in sole construction. Traditionally a working boot sole, the screwed sole consists of threaded brass wire that ‘screws’ the leather upper between the sole and insole, increasing longevity. This traditional sole style makes work boots more comfortable and secure. A filler cushion between insole and outer sole provides added comfort.

Thermoplastic formed laminated stiffener protects toes and retains shape.

Full leather linings mould to the foot and allow it to breathe.

The stacked leather heel reduces swelling from water and adds strength to the attachment of the heel to the boot.

Moulded leatherboard heel stiffener inserted between heel lining and upper protects and maintains shape.

R.M.Williams was founded by Reginald Murray Williams AO CMG in 1932 in South Australia. In conjunction with saddler Dollar Mick, RM handcrafted his first pair of boots from one piece of leather, a technique still used by the company to this day.

The unique one piece of leather design trait ensures only one seam at the back of each boot, which lessens the likelihood of rubbing and friction against multiple seams. The one seam also ensures less chance of breakages in the upper, helps prevent water damage and ultimately provides more comfort for the wearer.

Reginald Murray ‘RM’ Williams ao cMg, our founder and also a founding member of the australian Rough Riders association, made the first pair of R.M.Williams denim jeans nearly 80 years ago. one of his favourite sayings was, “a man doesn’t work any worse, for looking a whole lot better”.

R.M.Williams legends jeans, which are available for men and women, have developed a following because their special weave makes them strong and durable. Three leg lengths are available, including extra long, to ensure the jeans always fit well – even when getting on a horse. The flat inside seam prevents rubbing whilst on horseback and the turned backside seam means nothing catches when riding through scrub. Thought has also gone into the leg widths, the rust-proof rivets and the signature ‘bar-Tack’ stitching on all strain points, like belt loops and pocket corners. They’re made to work and ride in and are the result of rigorous testing and refinement.

the COttage RM Builtthe Stockman’s hall of Fame and Outback heritage Centre is a tribute to the culture and history of outback australia, particularly the pioneers who opened up our nation.
