The table and graph below show a summary of motor vehicle crashes at the intersection of IL Rt.43 at Cermak Road over a span of 7 years. The data from 2009-2010 show the period prior to the installation of RLR cameras. The data from 2011 show the year in which the cameras were installed. The data from 2012-2015 show the period following the installation.

According to the Average Daily Traffic Count (ADTC) report from IDOT, Cermak Rd had 30,300 - 30,100 cars which passed through this intersection daily in 2013-14 and the traffic has stayed consistent at 30,300 - 30,100 cars daily in 2015. IL Rt. 43 (Harlem Avenue) had 29,200-33,200 cars which passed through this intersection daily in 2013-14. Those numbers have slightly increased to 30,200-31,200 cars that pass through the intersection daily. The recent Crash Data showed a slight increase year to year in the number of total accidents after the installation of the RLR camera. (27 in 2012, 26 in 2013, 31 in 2014 to 36 in 2015)

All processes are in compliance with the RLR regulations laid out by the Illinois Department of Transportation District 1 Bureau of Traffic Operations. The City of Berwyn received approval to install a RLR camera at the intersection of IL Rt. 43 at Cermak Rd in 2011.

2013 There have been no Signal timing (or any other settings of Traffic Controller) changes. The intersection of IL Rt.43 at Cermak Rd is one of the busiest and most dangerous intersections in Berwyn. Since the installation of the RLR camera at this intersection, total crashes have been trending slightly up (25 in 2011 -> 27 in 2012 -> 26 in 2013 -> 31 in 2014 -> 36 in 2015). There has also been a slight increase in the Average Daily Traffic Count (ADTC) over the monitored 7 year span. The small upward trend of collisions after installation of the RLR camera were closely monitored and the City of Berwyn applied and received approval from IDOT to install an additional RLR camera at the westbound approach of IL Rt.43 at Cermak Rd in April 2015. Due to the small sample size of data after the recent addition of the new RLR camera at the westbound approach, we are not able to accurately access and come to a definite conclusion for the impact of the RLR cameras at IL Rt.43 at Cermak Rd at this time.
