Getting StartedThank you for purchasing the Rotel RLC-1050Power Distributor. We are confident that theRLC-1050 will enhance the performance ofyour audio system for years to come.

The RLC-1050 solves several problems thatare common in multi-components systems. Thepower control features of the RLC-1050 makeit easy to turn on and off all the componentsin the system. Furthermore each outlet hasseparate turn-on delay and turn-off delaycontrols. The delay for each control can beadjusted from 1 to 30 seconds. By setting thecontrols so that the system components turnon and off in the proper sequence, turn-onand turn-off thumps noises can be prevented.

The RLC-1050 can be set to work with either115V/60Hz or 230/50Hz AC power systems. It has universal power outlets that can acceptvirtually any kind of power plug.

The power outlets are also heavily filtered tominimize the potentially damaging effects ofpower line spikes.

The RLC-1050 also ensures efficient compo-nent operation by isolating them from perfor-mance-robbing lower level surges, RFI, andEMI. The RLC-1050 is proof that Rotel’s Bal-anced Design approach extends to your wholesystem.

A Few Precautions

Please read this manual carefully. It providescomplete information on how to incorporatethe RLC-1050 into your system as well asgeneral information that will help you get thegreatest benefit from it. Keep this manual forfuture reference. Please contact your autho-rized Rotel dealer for answers to any ques-tions you might have. In addition, all of us atRotel welcome your questions and comments.

The RLC-1050 can be set to work with either115V/60Hz or 230/50Hz AC power systems.See the “Power Mains Voltage Switch” sec-tion of this manual for more information.

Do not use an extension cord or power stripto provide power to the RLC-1050. Plug itdirectly into a wall outlet.

When unplugging the RLC-1050, or any otherelectrical device, do not pull on the power cord.Grasp the power cord plug and pull it straightout of the wall.

Do not plug an extension cord into theRLC-1050 to provide extra outlets. Under nocircumstances should the total power require-ments of the components plugged into theRLC-1050 exceed 1500 watts. If you havequestions, consult your authorized Rotel dealer.

Be certain to make all power and audio con-nections in the system before turning theRLC-1050 on for the first time.

Save the RLC-1050 shipping carton and allenclosed packing material for future use.Shipping or moving the RLC-1050 in anythingother than the original packing material mayresult in severe damage.

Fill out and send in the owner’s registrationcard packed with the RLC-1050. Also be sureto keep the original sales receipt. It is yourbest record of the date of purchase, which youwill need in the event warranty service is everrequired.

Placement

Like all electrical components, the RLC-1050can be affected by its environment and canaffect other components. Do not place theRLC-1050 on top of other components, anddo not place other components on top of it.This will minimize chance that the other com-ponents will pick up hum or interference.

Do not place the RLC-1050 where it will beexposed to direct sunlight, excessive dust, humidity or moisture, heat or cold.

We recommend installing the RLC-1050 infurniture designed to house audio components.Such furniture is designed to reduce or sup-press vibration, which can adversely affectsound quality. Ask your authorized Rotel dealerfor advice about component furniture andproper installation of audio components.

Cables

Be sure to keep the power cords, digital sig-nal cables and regular audio signal cablesin your installation away from each other. Thiswill minimize the chance of the regular au-dio signal cables picking up noise or inter-ference from the power cords or digital cables.Using only high quality, shielded cables willalso help to prevent noise or interference fromdegrading the sound quality of your system. If you have any questions see your authorizedRotel dealer for advice about the best cableto use with your system

Power Input and Control

Power Mains Voltage Switch

NOTE: Do not change the setting of thePower Mains Voltage Switch.

The RLC-1050 is set at the factory for the powermains voltage for the country in which it issold. There are components inside theRLC-1050 that are designed to work withspecific mains voltage. So you cannot switchthe RLC-1050 to work with a different powermains voltage.

Main Power Input

Connect the supplied power cord to the MainPower Input. Plug the power cord directly intoa wall power outlet. Do not use extension cordsor power strips. The outlet must be capableof providing 15 amps of current.

Power Switch and PowerIndicator

Push in the power switch to turn on theRLC-1050. Power is not applied to the SwitchedPower Outlets until they are activated by ei-ther the AC Line In Control Cord or the 12VTrigger In. See the following sections. Whenthe Switched Power Outlets are activated thePower Indicator is lit.

AC Line In Control Cord

One way to activate the Switched PowerOutlets is to apply power to the AC Line InControl Cord on the rear panel. This featureallows you to use a switched outlet on anothercomponent, typically a preamplifier, to turnon the power to the rest of the system. SeeFigure 2. If you do not use this feature, or the12V Trigger Input, to activate the SwitchedOutlets of the RLC-1050, the Control Cord mustbe plugged into the Unswitched Outlet on the RLC-1050 rear panel.

12V Trigger In and

Another way to activate the Switched Outletsof the RLC-1050 is to apply a turn on volt-age signal to one of the 12V Trigger In con-nectors. When a turn on voltage signal isapplied to one of the 12V Trigger In connec-tors the Switched Outlets of the RLC-1050 areactivated, even if the front panel power but-ton has not been pressed.

The turn on voltage signal may be AC or DCand can range from 3 volts to 30 volts. Manycomponents can provide a turn on voltage trig-ger signal when they are turned on. Both abare wire connector and a mini-plug typeconnector are provided.

When using the bare wire connector with aDC trigger signal be sure to maintain properpolarity. Connect positive to positive and nega-tive to negative.

Switched Power Outlets There are 12 switched AC outlets on the rearpanel that are controlled by the RLC-1050.In addition there is one unswitched outlet. Eachof the switched outlets has separate turn-ondelay and turn-off delay controls. The outletson the RLC-1050 are a “universal” type whichwill accept virtually any type of power plugs.

NOTE: The RLC-1050 can provide up to1500 watts of power. All electrical deviceslist the amount of power they will draw onthe back panel. Add up the wattage of allthe components that will be connected to theRLC-1050 to be sure it does not exceed 1500watts.

Turn-On Delay Controls andTurn-Off Delay Controls

Each switched outlet of the RLC-1050 hasseparate turn-on delay and turn-off delay con-trols. The delay for each control can be ad-justed from 1 to 30 seconds. When the con-trols are turned all the way counterclockwisethe delay is only 1 second. When the con-trols are turned all the way clockwise the de-lay is 30 seconds.

By setting the controls so that the system com-ponents turn on and off in the proper sequence,turn-on and turn-off thumps noises can be pre-vented.

Signal sources such as CD players should beturned on first. Set the Turn-On Delay Con-trols for these components for 1 second de-lay. Components such as signal processorsshould be turned on next. Set the Turn-OnDelay Control for these components to pro-vide a somewhat greater turn on delay. Am-plifiers should be turned on last, and so shouldhave the greatest amount of turn on delay. Thatdoes not mean that the Turn-On Delay Con-trol for the amplifier must be at the maximumsetting. A delay of 10-15 seconds may beenough to prevent turn on noises.

NOTE: Amplifiers can draw large amountsof power. A high power amplifier can drawmore power than the RLC-1050 can handle.Do not connect components to the RLC-1050that will require more than 1500 watts total.

Generally the components should be turnedoff in the reverse order they are turned on.Amplifiers should be turned off first and sig-nal sources last. Components that have shortturn-on delays should have long turn-off de-lays. Components that have long turn-on de-lays should have short turn-off delays.

Power Indicators

The Power Indicators for each switched out-let light when power is applied to the outlet. These indicators provide a visual indicationof the sequence in which the various poweroutlets are turned on and off.

Unswitched Outlet

The unswitched outlet may be used in one oftwo ways. If the Switched Outlets of theRLC-1050 are not activated with either theAC Line In Control Cord or the 12V TriggerIn, it must be connected to the Unswitchedoutlet. Otherwise the RLC-1050 Switched Out-lets will not be activated. If one of the twocontrol systems is used to activate theRLC-1050 switched outlets, the UnswitchedOutlet may be used to supply power to a com-ponent that should always be powered.

NOTE: Do not connect a component thatrequires more than 400 watts to theUnswitched outlet.

1 second delay 30 second delay

3-5 second delay 23-27 second delay

13-17 second delay

Circuit Breaker If the components connected to the RLC-1050draw more power than it can safely deliver,or if there is a short circuit in one of the powerlines of one of the components, the CircuitBreaker will be tripped. If this occurs, turn offthe RLC-1050 and check to be sure the totalpower requirements of the components con-nected to the RLC-1050 does not exceed 1500watts.

If the power requirements of the connectedcomponents is not greater than 1500 wattsthe circuit breaker being tripped might indi-cate a problem in one of the components. Trythe following test to isolate a potentially de-fective component. First, turn off all the con-nected components with their built-in powerswitches. Turn on the RLC-1050 and activatethe Switched Power Outlets. Then turn on thecomponents connected to the RLC-1050 oneby one. Turn them on in the same order theywould be turned on by the RLC-1050 – sig-nal sources first, amplifier last. If the CircuitBreaker is tripped as soon as a componentis turned on it indicates a problem with thatcomponent.

TroubleshootingMost difficulties are the result of incorrect con-nections, or improper control settings. The MainPower Indicator should be lit whenever theRLC-1050 is plugged into the wall power outlet, and the Main Power Switch is pushed. If it doesnot light, test the power outlet that the MainPower cord of the RLC-1050 is plugged intowith another electrical device, such as a lamp.Be sure the power outlet being used is not con-trolled by a switch that has been turned off.
