What are the Wümmewiesen?
• The Wümme is a river that flows through Bremen. The grassland along its bank is called the Wümmewiesen. (Wiese = meadow)

The seasons
● During spring and summer, the Wümmewiesen are used as pastures or as farmland for crops.
● During autumn and winter, most of the meadows are flooded and cannot be used.
Under water
• In the rainy seasons, the Wümme bursts its banks, the grassland is flowed, so that the meadows look like lakes. Bremen is protected by several dykes to prevent the water from flooding into the city.
Nature reserve
● In autumn and winter there are lots of rare bird that rest on the Wümmewiesen on their way south.
● Therefore the area was made into a wildlife sanctuary to protect these birds.
