I am SO EXCITED to share our “Away For The Day” initiative. Today, the Screenagers’ team and I are officially launching a website-based initiative to

promote middle schools to adopt policies where phones are put away for the day in places like lockers. We have worked for many months on this and

the site is full of super cool resources and videos to empower anyone to make changes.

Would you take 2 seconds to PLEDGE at AwayForTheDay.org to show your support of this initiative? OUR IMMEDIATE GOAL is to to get 1,000

pledges by March 31st, so when we go to news outlets we can show them how much parents, teachers, principals, and others care about this issue!

Please share via social, email and word of mouth.

Thanks to the many of you who participated in our national survey, we learned that 55% of middle schools let students carry phones all day, yet 82% of

parents do not want their kids using phones at school. The science supports parents when it comes to academic success and emotional well-being for

middle schoolers. Inspired by the science and what you told us you wanted, we created Away For The Day.

For today’s Tech Talk Tuesday here are some questions:

1. What upsides can you see for middle schoolers if they had their phones away for the day?

2. Which of your friends, family members or work colleagues seem to have a constant need to be checking their phone or looking at a screen? Who

do you know who doesn’t seem to be pulled by screens in the same way?

3. When middle schools do allow students to carry phones, do you think that the students who, for whatever reason, have a particularly hard time

not checking their phone, are at a minor or major disadvantage?

Thank you again for sharing the website with your community so that they will pledge and get all the free resources.

For more discussion ideas, you can peruse past Tech Talk Tuesdays. If you are interested in seeing Screenagers, you can find event listings on our site and find out how to host a screening. Stay in touch with the Screenagers community on Facebook, Twitter and at www.screenagersmovie.com.

April 18, 2018 Parent Night at 6pm

“Ask, could it be Sepsis?” Presenter: Amy Sprague- Doctor of Nursing Practice at VA Medical Center Indianapolis (her CV is at-tached here)

Objectives:

Learn the definition of sepsis, what causes sepsis, and what the symptoms of sepsis are that parents should be aware of

Understand how sepsis is managed and what consequences there are for those that battle sepsis

Understand how you can share the signs of sepsis with others (this could be an opportunity to fold in the “Fly to Fight Sepsis” Roche Diagnostics’ initiative and do the launch together!)

Sepsis Facts in the USA (to be used in the invitation, perhaps not all of them):

Patients with weakened immune systems, like those with the flu, are at greater risk of sepsis.

Sepsis is the leading cause of death for infants and children worldwide.

Approximately 5,000 children in the United States die each year from sepsis

Every hour delayed in treating a patient with sepsis increases mortality by 8%

38% of children who survive sepsis sustain lifelong disabilities

More than 1.5 million people in the United States develop sepsis each year

At least 250,000 people in the United States die each year from sepsis.

Sepsis is the leading cause of death in U.S. hospitals. As many of half of all patients who die in U.S. hos-pitals have sepsis.

Sepsis is increasing at a rate of 10.3% each year in the United States.

One in five severe sepsis patients are readmitted to hospital within 30 days. Among those readmitted with-in 30 days, 66.9% had an infection and 40.3% had severe sepsis on readmission.

Sepsis begins outside the hospital for the vast majority (nearly 80%) of sepsis patients.

Sepsis is the most expensive condition treated in U.S. hospitals, costing nearly $24 billion annually. Sepsis is also the most expensive condition billed to Medicare.

The cost of sepsis is increasing annually by a rate of 11.9%.

Join Club C5- A club where EVERYONE is welcome!

Come join us for Club C5 where we will be celebrating culture, character, courage and changing the world! This club will meet approximately one Friday morning a month in Mrs. Finn’s music room. What do the 5 “C’s” mean? Celebrate- have fun, recognize, honor, to make known publicly Culture- learning about the behaviors and characteristics of a particular social, ethnic or age group. Think about what makes you and your family special. What language do you speak? What traditions and beliefs do you have? Do you enjoy special foods and wear clothing to represent your family or history? Culture can include the ways a group of people live their daily lives. The fact that there are different cultures found throughout the globe is what makes our world so wonderful! Character- Character is who we are even when no one is watching. Having GOOD character means doing the right thing just because it is right to do what is right.

Courage- being brave as you meet new experience and difficult situations. Being courageous can be tough. We will learn how to have courage through tough times. Changing the world- How can we make the world a better place? We will explore how we can help make a positive impact in our school, community and world. Each meeting will cover different topics which will be shared on the announcements prior to the date. All meetings will begin at 6:30 A.M. Since the club will be meeting in Mrs. Finn’s music room, you may drop off your child in the back of the building by the tennis courts. Please email Lisa Finn at [email protected] or Kristyn Hamm at [email protected] if you have any questions or would like to be involved in some way or would be interested in sharing at a meeting about your culture or a story of character and courage. This club does not require a permission slip to participate; however, the permission slip below is required to try food that might be offered at some meetings. Friday, September 1st Friday, November 3rd Friday February 2nd Friday, April 13th Friday, October 6th Friday, December 1st Friday, March 2nd Friday, May 4th
