What does this suggest about 'nature' of empire? ie empire was not a defensive measure. Following the defeat of the Hyksos and Nubians by Ahmose, further expansion was for asserting Egypt's power and economic benefit. Just look at the lists of 'tribute' that Thutmose III recorded in his inscriptions such as the Annals.

Van de Mieroop believes that by the time of Thutmose IV Nubia at least as far as the Third Cataract was administered 'as if it were an integral part of Egypt'. That's a useful quote, especially if compared to how northern empire was administered. The paragrpahs that follow look at how Nubia was oeganised and managed. Note how he suggests that beyond the third cataract was more of a sphere of influence.

Important aspect ofthe nature of any empire - part of what an empire is about. Empires exist for economic exploitation ('purely economic' implies Egypt's involvement had nothing to do with the defence / protection of Egypt) Gold, Gold, Gold!

Fundamental difference in the nature of the Egyptian Empire in the north. Can you explain that difference? - city-states- other emerging power - Mitanni - controlled vassal princes in Syria

While in ths south Nubia was annexed, in the north military campaigns before Thutmose III 'were more raids than attempts at annexation'.

How did Thutmose III change Egypt's policy towards western Asia 9Syria Palestine)?

Thutmose III was greatest warrior pharaoh of early NK, but according to Van de Mieroop, even his constant campaigning over 17 yrs did not mean 'conquest' of Styria. Only sothern Palestine was tight;y controlled, while vassal princes ruled with some independence father north.
