NATIONAL MERIT The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual competition for college undergraduate
awards in which secondary school students who rank at the top of the academic ability scale
are identified and publicly honored. Students enter these competitions by taking the Preliminary
Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test at a designated time during
the high school curriculum. Students ranking among the top 34,000 in the nation are designated
“Commended Scholars” by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Of those 34,000, only
about 16,000 of them were named “Semifinalists.” Semifinalists are eligible to continue in the
competition for about 7,600 Merit Scholarship awards.

(finding the main idea, supporting details, inference, purpose, audience, idiomatic expressions,
interdisciplinary content, unfamiliar word, tone, and for the upper levels, point of view). Here are

POETRY OUT LOUD COMPETITION
Congratulations to our school-wide Poetry Out Loud winner,
Amanda Martinez. Her recitation of poet, Thomas
McGrath's, "Ode for the American Dead in Asia" earned
high scores in presence, articulation, dramatization,
complexity, and understanding and demonstration of an
inherent sympathy for war victims. She advanced to the
regionals in Des Plaines on February 18 for the chance to
compete at the National Poetry Out Loud competition and
win a $20,000 scholarship. Congratulations, too, to the other
students who placed in the top five: runner-up Adam Nie;
Nicole Bajerek; Gianni Segarra; and Lisandro Resto. The
competition was organized by the Library Department, which is hosting a daylong poetry slam
with a visiting spoken-word poet this spring in collaboration with the English Department.

HONORS REPERTORY DANCE ENSEMBLE
RB’s Honors Repertory Dance Ensemble had the privilege of working with professional
choreographer and dancer, Donnette Cannonie. Donnette spent four days with our students
staging an original dance that was performed at the Winter Dance Concert on Thursday,
December 4th, 2014. Donnette pushed the dancers and encouraged them to look at
movement and performance in a new way. As a highlight students were able to hear about
Donnette’s experience working with nationally and internationally known recording artists on
music videos and live stage shows! Former RBHS alum, Danielle Kovack, is currently working with
Donnette Cannonie on various teaching and performing engagements.

U.S.A. CAPITAL ART WORK WINNER OF CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION
NICK HAMERA Junior, Class of 2016
Nick was the winner of the 4th Congressional Art Competition for high school
students. This competition has been held every year since 1982 and Nick, as
far as we know, is the first RB student to achieve the honor. His “Old Man"
(attached) charcoal drawing was selected by Luis
Gutierrez's office to represent the 4th Congressional District of Illinois. The
drawing will be displayed in the tunnel connecting the Congressional offices
to the Capital Building. The tunnel is the main thoroughfare used by
Congressional members and tour groups every day to travel from the
Congressional offices to the Capital Building. It will be hanging from June,
2015 through June 2016. There is a reception for all student artists and others in the US
Capital Building on June 24th, 2015, and Nick received two round trip tickets to the
event from SWA.
METRO SUBURBAN CONFERENCE ART SHOW AND WORKSHOP
The RBHS Visual Arts Department hosted the annual Metro Suburban
Conference Art Show and Workshop on Wednesday, February 18, with
100 participating students and faculty from our 13 conference schools.
Ben Gembara, Caley Stanislaw, Emily Temmer, Taylor Jensen, Mia
Caballero, Elizabeth Rowley, and Alana Novak were chosen to
represent RB as our most promising underclassmen in the department.

These participants had the opportunity to create art pieces in a studio
workshop operated by five local working artists. The student-artists produced
various pieces including oil stick portraits, acrylic painting, photograms,
sculpture, and wheel throwing. Each student-artist contributed previously
made artwork in a competition judged by a curator and artist from The
Riverside Art Center. Alana Novak won an award for her photography and
all seven Bulldogs represented our school in a proud fashion.
TALENTED STUDENT ARTISTS Students of the Art Department in Mr. Blair Jensen’s class, put forth a group effort in creating the
design of the 2015/2016 Student Handbook Cover
RB STUDENT ASKED TO DESIGN POLICE DEPARTMENT LOGO REBECCA BURKE, senior student (Class of 2015) was asked from Officer Katzin of the Riverside
Police Department during her junior year to redesign the Riverside Police Department Arm
Patch. Officer Katzin saw Rebecca's art work hanging in Mr. Passarella's office and decided to
offer the project to Rebecca instead of the company that designs patches. Rebecca's patch
design now can be seen on all police uniforms!

STUDENT OF THE QUARTER
RBHS is a place where we strive for “Excellence and Ethics in all Bulldogs Do!” Therefore, we
continued with our student recognition program this year to celebrate the good choices our
students make, from the small daily courtesies to the astonishing, large contributions. It is
important to stop and recognize these positive actions to show our appreciation and to inspire
others to follow suit. In order to become a Student of the Quarter, each student had to earn the
admiration of the teachers from a specific department by excelling in two areas: academics
and character. The ceremonies recognized students displaying the Character Counts! Pillars of
Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Trustworthiness, Caring and Citizenship. Each quarter, we honored 10 students representing each academic department, in addition to
Student Building Leaders, who exemplify our values of "Excellence and Ethics in all Bulldogs Do!"
These students were nominated by faculty for excelling in two areas: academics and
character. The following students were recognized during this school year:
