Welcome to our 25th Annual Bull Sale. Our goal the past 4 decades has been to produce bulls that sire calves which give you the least amount of hassle and the most profit. We remain committed to that goal which we hope you will see
reflected in this year’s offering.
Our “Built to Work” bulls are a result of a breeding philosophy we have been dedicated to for more than 40 years. It starts with the cow. Our cowherd is expected to calve unassisted and breed back on grass. No chasing fads - just sound, predictable cattle that work in the real world. Add to that modern scientific tools, performance documentation and visual appraisal. The result is bulls that will produce a productive and profitable cowherd for our customer.
Depending on the makeup of your herd, using our Purebred or SimAngus bulls allows you to take advantage of hybrid vigor with added pounds on your calves and the associated complementary traits of enhanced carcass qualities, cowherd longevity and productivity. After 40 years of selling bulls the three things we hear repeatedly are our bulls calve easy, they stay sound and their calves top the market.
New this year, nearly all the bulls will have LD Genomic-Enhanced EPDs. We discuss it more in depth on page 7 in the catalog, but basically the EPDs now have the accuracy of a bull with 7 progeny for birth weight, 8 progeny for weaning weight, etc. You should be able to sleep a little easier using unproven bulls with enhanced EPDs.
All bulls will be semen tested, scrotal measured and ultra sounded before the sale. Results will be posted on our web site as they become available and will be at the sale. As in the past the fall bulls ran on grass last summer, so their yearling weights will be lighter. Bulls are cataloged by age, breed and sire, so you will find bulls of consistent quality throughout the catalog.
If you would like to view the bulls at our operation prior to the sale feel free to give us a call and stop by. We appreciate the opportunity to visit one on one with past and potential customers. If you have any questions please feel free to call or email.
As always, we appreciate you taking the time to look at this year’s offering. To our past customers, thank you for placing your trust and hard earned dollars in our stock. To potential customers, rest assured we will strive to give you the best possible prod-uct and service. We look forward to a long and productive relationship.
Hope to see you on sale day,
Special thanks to our dedicated team that helpswith the daily tasks at River Creek Farms!

RETAINED SEMEN INTERESTRiver Creek Farms will retain 1/3 semen interest on all bulls in the offering. You will own full posses-sion and salvage value of the bull. In the event that semen sales become a reality on your purchase, River Creek Farms will retain the rights to 1/3 of semen sales revenue. River Creek Farms retained semen interest remains if the bull is sold to a third party.
BULL DEVELOPMENTWe performance test the bulls on a ration designed for 3.5 pounds per day gain, in lots one-half mile long to ensure adequate exercise. We believe this conditions the bulls for breeding with sound feet and legs while enabling them to exhibit their gain ratio. The fall bulls were run on grass last summer without supplementa-tion from May 1 to September 1. Consequently, their yearling weights, WDA, and ribeye areas are smaller than the spring bulls. You should not use the data to compare the two groups of bulls but use it to compare bulls within each age group.

RCF BULL RANKING SYSTEM
Bulls selling in this Sale are the result of years of data being collected and analyzed to provide superior genetics for our customers so they can breed profitable cattle. The bulls have been sorted into 3 specific genetic lines to simplify your selection process. Use our bull ranking system along with API and TI to select the best bull for your operation.
Using API & TI
Zero in on the unit difference between bulls. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can figure a bull scoring +180 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +130 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000).
All Purpose IndexUse API to evaluate sires for use on the entire cow herd, with a portion of their daughters kept to maintain herd size and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold by grade and yield. Terminal IndexUse TI to evaluate sires for use on Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold by grade and yield.

Why Buy A River Creek Farms Bull?
WHY RIVER CREEK FARMS BULLS WILL MAXIMIZE YOUR ANGUS BASED COWHERD’S PROFIT:
1. Proven Calving Ease, Customer Validated for over 30 years2. Increase Weaning Weights with Hybrid Vigor3. Enhance Disposition, Carcass and Maternal Traits4. Maintain a Moderate Frame Size While Increasing Thickness5. Higher Profit Potential Based on Economically Relevant Traits
$API & $TI
The Power of HeterosisThere is a reason every kernel of corn planted in this country is a hybrid. It’s the same reason every commercial market hog, chicken, turkey and even catfish are hybrids. The power of heterosis is enormous.
The Goal: Produce for the Market According to Tom Brink of Five Rivers Ranch Cattle Feeding, LLC (10 feedyards, 811,000 capacity), Five Rivers’ first choice in feeders is the Angus /Continental cross, 50% to 75% Angus and 25% to 50% Continental. This blend of Angus and Continental cattle “creates a good feeding, good grading, good yielding animal that is usually the right size.”
The Bonus: The Crossbred CowIn addition to heavier calves, research shows that producers who keep crossbred heifers as replacements will realize on average a 38% greater longevity and 25% increase in production. The SolutionThe simple solution is to use River Creek Farms Purebred bulls on Angus based cows to create Si-mAngus feeders and replacement females. Our bulls have genera-tions of calving ease, performance in a moderate frame and maternal longevity bred in. Ideal for cross-breeding with the Angus based cow. Our customers that are doing this now report no calving problems, increased weaning weights and high buyer acceptance. The second option is to use River Creek Farms ¾ or ½ SimAngus bulls on crossbred cows to create a per-centage feeder and replacement. By using this simple breeding plan it sustains hybrid vigor and stabilizes your herd at the desired British/Continental mix for your environment and target market. With added bonus of higher semen output and the increased longevity of the hybrid bull.
Bottomline, if you have a purebred cowherd or crossbred herd, we have the bull to cover you for the future.

Genomic-Enhanced EPDs
NEW THIS YEAR: BULLS SELL WITH GENOMIC- ENHANCED EPDSAt River Creek Farms, we believe that DNA technology will play an integral part in the beef industry’s future. Our goal is to give our customers as much information as possible to make their deci-sions easier and reduce the inherent risk of buying non-parent bulls. Genomic-Enhanced EPDs help us accomplish that goal (bulls with “EST EPDs” do not have Genomic-Enhanced EPDs).
The American Simmental Association (ASA) is now offering a Simmental and SimAngus DNA profile which, when incorporated into the ASA’s genetic evaluation, will significantly enhance the accuracies of expected progeny differences (EPDs).
The new Simmental and SimAngus specific profile is the result of a multi-year collaborative effort. ASA’s genomic database contains more than 3,000 animals, each with approximately 50,000 genetic data points.
Why Use Genomic-Enhanced EPDs?
1. Increase Confidence• Improve reliability of EPDs in young animals and those with low accuracy EPDs• Reduce variation in EPDs as animals become more proven• Boost confidence when making mating decisions
2. Save Time and Money • Quicker trait improvement with enhanced accuracies• Make better replacement and mating decisions earlier in an animal’s productive life• DNA information is similar to adding progeny records to an animal’s evaluation
Genomic-enhanced EPD’s gives buyers access to unprecedented amount of information to select their next herd bull.

River Creek Farms is a diversified family operation owned and operated by the Mertz families. The family’s interest in cattle began in 1891. Today, the business continues with third generation Harold D. and Jeanne Mertz, fourth generation Joe and Kim Mertz and Bob and Mary Mertz as operating partners. Joe manages the cowherd and Bob manages the crops. Mary and Kim provide all the administrative support required to the run the business. Harold and Jeanne contribute critical insight and advice on an ongoing basis.
The farm headquarters are located approximately nine miles east of Manhattan along K18, in the Kaw Valley River bottom. Our main crops are corn and soybeans, with some wheat and alfalfa on leased and owned cropland. Most of this cropland is in the river valley with some upland ground. We do some irrigation with center pivots and flood irrigation. During the summer the cattle graze Bluestem pastures in the beautiful Flint Hills south of our farm and utilize the cornstalks in the fall and winter.
Joe introduced Simmental to our Hereford cowherd by way of artificial insemination in 1970. Around the same time we became members of the American Simmental Association. Our breeding philosophy is the same today as it was 44 years ago. We have concentrated on producing cattle that will thrive under range conditions while focusing on the economically relevant traits for Calving Ease, Growth, Maternal and Carcass Value. Recently, we have used proven Angus sires to produce SimAngus to give our customers more breeding options.

- 65 head had an average 205 WW of 629 lbs- 64 head out of the 65 heifers bred backThe buyer of all the heifer calves (260 head) told me they were the gentlest calves in the yard and hadn’t doctored a calf in the first 30 days. “Doing great” was his comment. I retained 60 head for replacements. Vet was here to Bangs vaccinate and said they were one of the nicest set of gentle heifers he has seen. That says a lot, he’s 86 years old. Cows bred back at a 96% pregnancy rate on a 58 day breeding sea-son. Wow!
Bulls did a great job and are looking good. Thanks for all your help with choosing bulls. Hope to see you sale day.
