Welcome to our 23nd Annual Bull Sale. It is indeed an exciting time to be in the beef industry. With prices at all-time highs and technology improving every year to help us make better decisions, you can’t help being excited!
This year we have a great selection of 52 SimAngus, 36 Simmental, and 12 Angus bulls, including 15 fall yearling bulls that ran on grass all summer. They are stout and ready for heavy use. 90 bulls are homozygous black. Many are full or half brothers and ideal for use in large commercial herds.
The bulls in this year’s sale are “Built to Work”. They are a result of a breeding philosophy we have been dedicated to for over 40 years. We strive to produce bulls whose calves will give you the least amount of hassle and maximize profit. Depending on the makeup of your herd, using a River Creek Farms Purebred or SimAngus bull will allow you to take advantage of hybrid vigor. That means added pounds on your calves, enhanced carcass quality, increased cowherd longevity and overall productivity.
Our “Built to Work” philosophy emphasizes bull development. Instead of developing bulls in small pens to maximize fat thickness and average daily gain, our bulls have been developed in large lots, near our headquarters, to ensure sound feet and legs while giving them plenty of exercise. Our customers from western Kansas and Colorado appreci-ate the soundness and condition of the bulls, especially during extremely dry summers like last year.
Because of the drought our weaning weights were down 75 pounds this year. Fortunately, the bulls have gained well this winter and are back to normal weight.
Every bull will be semen tested, scrotal measured and ultra-sounded before the sale. Results will be posted on our website, www.RiverCreekFarms.com, as they become available and will also be available sale day.
If you would like to view the bulls and our operation prior to the sale feel free to give us a call and stop by. We appreciate the fel-lowship of past and potential customers. Kim enojoys preparing a home cooked meal for our bull customers who stop by and since the kids have all moved out of the house, I appreciate actually get-ting a home cooked meal every once and awhile.
We hope to see you February 13th. Plan on coming early to look at the cattle and enjoy a ribeye steak lunch with us.
Special thanks to our dedicated team that handles most of the daily tasks at River Creek Farms!

RETAINED SEMEN INTERESTRiver Creek Farms will retain 1/3 semen interest on all bulls in the offering. You will own full posses-sion and salvage value of the bull. In the event that semen sales become a reality on your purchase, River Creek Farms will retain the rights to 1/3 of semen sales revenue. River Creek Farms retained semen interest remains if the bull is sold to a third party.
BULL DEVELOPMENTWe performance test the bulls on a ration designed for 3.0 pounds per day gain and in lots one-half mile long to ensure adequate exercise. We believe this adequately conditions the bulls for breeding with sound feet and legs while enabling them to exhibit their gain ratio. You may notice the fall bulls have lower adjusted yearling weights than the spring bulls. The fall bulls were run on grass last summer without supplementation from May 1 to September 1. Consequently, their yearling weights, WDA, and ribeye areas are smaller than the spring bulls. You should not use the data to compare the two groups of bulls but use it to compare bulls within each age group.

EPD CHANGES - 2012 vs. 2013 BASE EPDSThe Simmental Association changed the EPD base this past fall. The table below shows the change on Purebreds. Percentile rank will not be affected by this change.
Power BullsWork best on mature Angus, Crossbred or Continental cows when all calves are sold at weaning. “Power Bulls” have breed average or above birth weights and weaning weights in the breeds top 25%. Due to the pedigrees behind our bulls, we guarantee no calving problems on Angus cows.
Heifer BullsThe easiest calving bulls. These bulls will work on Angus, Crossbred or Continental heifers. They can be used on any cow. Daughters sired by these bulls will make excellent replacements.
All Purpose BullsWill work on Angus, Crossbred or Continental heifers with supervision while calving. They can also be used on any cow. Daughters will make good replacements. Calves out of an “All Purpose Bull” will weigh more at weaning when compared to offspring of “Heifer Bulls”.

NEW BULL RANKING SYSTEM TO SIMPLIFY BULL BUYING
Using API & TI API & TI can help simplify the bull buying process.
Zero in on the unit difference between bulls. The difference can be used to de-termine how much a bull is worth com-pared to another.
For example, when buying an all-pur-pose-type sire, you can figure a bull scor-ing +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000).
ALL PURPOSE INDEXEvaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd, with a portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold by grade and yield. TERMINAL INDEXEvaluates sires for use on Angus cows with off-spring put on feed and sold by grade and yield.

Why Buy A River Creek Farms Bull?
Why River Creek Farm’s Bulls will maximize your Angus based cowherd’s profit:
1. Proven Calving Ease, Customer Validated for over 30 years.2. Increase Weaning Weights with Hybrid Vigor3. Enhance Disposition, Carcass and Maternal Traits4. Maintain a Moderate Frames Size While Increasing Thickness5. Higher Profit Potential, Based on Economically Relevant Traits
$API & $TI.
The Power of HeterosisThere is a reason every kernel of corn planted in this country is a hybrid. It’s the same reason every commercial market hog, chicken, turkey and even catfish are hybrids. The power of heterosis is enor-mous.
The Goal: Produce for the Market According to Tom Brink of Five Rivers Ranch Cattle Feeding, LLC (10 feedyards, 811,000 capacity), Five Rivers first choice in feeders is the Angus /Continental cross, 50% to 75% Angus and 25% to 50% Continental. This blend of Angus and Continental cattle “creates a good feeding, good grading, good yielding animal that is usually the right size.” The Perfect CombinationHigher percentage British cattle often lack muscle, yield and produce too many Yield Grade 4s. Higher percentage Continental cattle often lack grade and often get to big before they finish. A balanced com-bination of Angus and Continental breeding is tough to beat. This is solidified by the data below.

Our Commitment to Your Success
River Creek Farms wants to help you market your calves.
At River Creek Farms we are committed to helping you increase the value of your calves. Many of you have invested in our genetics by buying our bulls. We’d like to see you get as high a return as possible on this investment.
To that end, last year we joined the marketing group Allied Genetic Resources. Together we are anticipating gaining access to more markets for our customers. Allied Genetic Resources has established a network of over 20+ (and growing) Allied Feeding Partners that feed over 4 million head of cattle per year. These feedlots are looking for cattle that grow and hit grid specs.
In order to help you gain access to these markets Allied Genetic Resources is compiling a data base of po-tential cattle for future sale. We hope you’ll consider adding your cattle to this data base.
To let us know about any cattle you plan on marketing, contact:
The Bonus: The Crossbred CowIn addition to heavier calves, research shows that producers who keep crossbred heifers as replacements will realize an average 38% greater longevity and 25% increase in production. The SolutionThe simple solution is to use River Creek Farms Purebred bulls on Angus based cows to create Si-mAngus feeders and replacement females. Our bulls have genera-tions of calving ease, performance in a moderate frame and maternal longevity bred in. Ideal for cross-breeding with the Angus based cow. Our customers that are doing this now report no calving problems, increased weaning weights and high buyer acceptance. The second option is to use River Creek Farms ¾ or ½ SimAngus bulls on crossbred cows to create a per-centage feeder and replacement. By using this simple breeding plan it sustains hybrid vigor and stabilizes your herd at the desired British/ Continental mix for your environment and target market. An added bonus is higher semen output and the increased longevity of the hybrid bull. Bottomline, if you have a purebred cowherd or crossbred herd, we have the bull to cover you for the future.

River Creek Farms is a diversified family operation owned and operated by the Mertz families. The family’s interest in cattle began in 1891. Today, the business continues with third generation Harold D. and Jeanne Mertz, fourth generation Joe and Kim Mertz and Bob and Mary Mertz as operating partners. Joe manages the cowherd and Bob manages the crops. Mary and Kim provide all the administrative support required to the run the business. And Harold and Jeanne contribute critical insight and advice on an ongoing basis.
The farm headquarters is located approximately nine miles east of Manhattan along K18, in the Kaw Valley River bottom. Our main crops are corn and soybeans, with some wheat and alfalfa on leased and owned cropland. Most of this crop-land is in the river valley with some upland ground. We do some irrigation with center pivots and flood irrigation. Dur-ing the summer the cattle graze Bluestem pastures in the beautiful Flint Hills south of our farm and utilize the cornstalks in the fall and winter.
Joe introduced Simmental to our Hereford cowherd by way of artificial in-semination in 1970. Around the same time we became members of the American Simmental Association. Our breeding philosophy is the same to-day as it was 43 years ago. We have concentrated on producing cattle that will thrive under range conditions while focusing on the economically rele-vant traits for Calving Ease, Growth, Maternal and Carcass Value. Recently, we have used proven Angus sires to produce SimAngus to give our custom-ers more breeding options.
