MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

Riva del Garda 2015 has been the epicentre of heated debates, conflicting opinions, new friendships and a lot of fun; people coming together to experience something unique, learn

about things they never considered before and discuss Europe’s most burning issues.

An EYP session is a meeting point between diverse expectations and distinct realities. For every single participant, a unique experience defined by a myriad of factors.

The chairs making plans, the organisers running around catering to every need, all towards the single purpose of giving you, the delegates, the best experience you can have.

Our contribution is more symbolic and long-term, with the aim of giving you a tangible memory of this extraordinary experience through photos and words. Flick through the

pages to find a collection of perspectives from Riva Media on topics ranging from Italian culinary traditions to the functions of the EU institutions.

We hope you like it!

Riva Del Garda is the location of the first National Selection Conference of EYP Italy in 2015. In the words that follow you will find some interesting information about the his-tory of this unique location. Riva del Garda is well placed by the shores of Garda Lake, the biggest lake on the Italian peninsula. Around its shores, civilisation has constantly developed and now Riva del Garda is one of the most prestigious cities in north Italy.

During its history, Riva del Garda was ruled by a number of different principalities, families and rulers. In the 12th century, the city became part of the Episcopal principa-lity of Trento. Later on, some of Verona’s most affluent families took charge. The count of Tyrol assumed control until 1509 and soon after the city was annexed by the Republic of Venice, also known as Serenissima. In 1796, Riva del Garda was conquered by Napo-leon who made it part of his territory in 1810. After the Italian wars of independence, Riva del Garda became part of Italy in 1923, when the country separated from Austria. In most recent history, famous artists and authors like Franz Kafka and Heinrich Mann visited Riva del Garda, which helped the city become one of the most important tourist attractions of the region.

Apart from history, Riva del Garda’s breathtaking landscape is perhaps one of the most wonderful settings both for residential stay and vacations. Primarily, the city has become famous for the diversity of water sports that people can experience in the lake. From boat races, windsurfing, water ski to even scuba diving, the Garda Lake has it all. On the shore, cycling and mountain climbing are the most widespread activities. The incredible views which people can enjoy from the top of the surrounding pre-Alpine mountains makes the hike, worthwhile.

Legend has it that a curious event occurred in the lake in 2001. Some local fishermen in-formed the coast guard that there was a creature that was able to eat the fish which they were meant to catch in their nets. The following year, two scuba divers reportedly saw a giant sheatfish! Are these legends or are they merely exaggerated facts? The mysteries of Lake Garda remain unknown. What we do know is that if you are in Riva del Garda, you must eat Knödel, one of the best recipes in the area.

Riva del Garda’s history is rich just like its beauty and kitchen; all the more reasons which makes it a remarkable location.

ITALY AND CULINARY ARTT a s t e s a n d t r a d i t i o n s f r o m I t a l i a n V i l l a g e

Different ingredients, different tastes and different histories from many parts of Italy, converged in Riva del Garda 2015, the 34th National Selection Conference of EYP Italy and the culinary experience was incredible!

Pordenone’s delegation coming from Liceo Leopardi-Majorana delighted our palate with recipes like Frico, Gubana, Polenta, Brovada and many different types of wines, cheese and salami. The participants of the session enjoyed some very intense flavours from North East Italy.

Orvieto’s delegation which traveled from Umbria to Riva del Garda, offered a special se-lection of Bruschetta, Strangozzi, Vincisgrassi, Galantina and Porchetta. Lazio is certainly a region with fantastic food. Moreover, the three delegations representing Lombardia satisfied our taste buds with recipes like Luganega, Buseca, Frittelle, Alborelle and Spiedo. A must try!

In the southern part of Italy, a very important culinary tradition has developed and we were very lucky to experience it. The delegations from Impallomenti and Vittorio Emanuele III High Schools from Sicily provided us with delights like Cassata, Ricotta, Arancini, Schiacciata and citrus fruits.

To the North! The Parzanese High School delegation all the way from Campania, the birthplace of pizza, also impressed us in terms of taste. From Caprese to Mozzarella di Bufala, the Italian Village had it all.

Italian Village is truly an explosion of tastes and the Abruzzo region had a lot of tasteful dishes, such as Scrippelle, Cazzimperio, Stoccafisso and chickpea croquettes. Peano Rosa High School from Teramo surely enhanced the culinary experience.

Tuscany is another region that has a very famous culinary tradition. With a lot of recipes like Panzanella, Acquacotta, Fettunta, Farinata, Burristo and many varieties of wines, salami and cheese, Vallisneri High School from Lucca was ready to meet the hunger challenge.

Last, but not least, Piemonte! Our culinary journey began in the North East and finishes in the North West of Italy. Spinelli and Gioberti High Schools brought with them, the best that Turin has to offer. The tradition of chocolate is deeply rooted in Piemonte with products like Nutella, Gianduiotto and ice cream being only some of the highlights!
