No one knows exactly what causes diabetes.
We do know that some things, called risk factors, increase your chance of
having type 2 diabetes
Risk factors for type 2 diabetes include:
Being over 45 years old
Being overweight (bmi >25)
Having family history of diabetes
Being African American or Hispanic
Being sedentary
Having had diabetes during a pregnancy, or giving birth to a baby
who weighed >9 lbs
Having high blood pressure (140/90 or higher)
Having an HDL (good) cholesterol level < 35mg/dL
Having a triglycerides (blood fat) level of
250mg/dL or more
