READINGS FOR THE THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
November 3, 2019: Wisdom 11:22-12:1 Your imperishable spirit is
in all things! 2 Thessalonians 1:11-2:2 May God make you worthy of
God’s call.. Luke 19:1-10 I give half my belongings to the poor.
This week we celebrate All Saints’ Day, a holy day of obligation
dedicated to those whose lives are examples of our hope. All Souls’
Day is a time to remember someone close to you or your family who
has died. You might recall them by preparing a meal of their
favorite food and setting a place for them at the table with their
picture. You might retell stories about the person, and share what
you loved about them or do an activity that this person loved. At
the end of the day, light a candle and say prayers for your loved
one. Pray with the music and images of John Becker’s Litany of the
Saints which can be found at
www.youtube.com/watch?v=kId0NBvNiCk.

SPARROWS NEST When The Night Comes
Sparrow’s Nest of Northwest Montana humbly invites you to join
us on Saturday, November 9th for our annual, When The Night Comes.
This year, the sleep-out will coincide with homeless awareness
month to bring special attention to the issues unaccompanied youth
face on a daily basis. For one night, we ask that you put yourself
in the shoes of a homeless teen and sleep out during a cold autumn
night to experience what some youth do on a nightly basis. Through
this experience, Sparrow’s Nest of Northwest Montana hopes to
provide insight into how hard it is to survive these harsh
conditions. We ask that you donate to the worthy cause of helping
us provide housing for unaccompanied homeless youth in the Flathead
Valley while they work to complete their high school education by
sponsoring a participant.
When The Night Comes, Trinity Lutheran Church, 400 West
California Street Sleep out 7 pm to 7 am November 9/10

The Nazareth Page A gospel meditation for your home
October 27, 2019 – 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time Luke 18:9-14
It is not difficult to imagine the scene described in today’s
gospel. It is a study of contrasts. Right there in the very front
of the temple area was a man standing tall, proclaiming to God how
good he judged he was. He described his generosity, his exact
following of religious law, and his upstanding reputation in the
community. God should be proud of him. He was so much better than
others. On the other hand, in the far back shadows knelt a tax
collector (likely despised by his “customers”) asking God for
forgiveness. He admitted to his faults and could only rely on God’s
mercy. Jesus adds that the humble one found God’s favor. What does
this say about us? Are we all not imperfect in so many ways? Cannot
we all list many ways that compromise a full response to God’s
invitations? But what’s the value in admitting this to God? While
we can easily see through the hypocrisy of the man in front, what’s
positive about the poor guy in back? I think it’s about being
totally honest before God. It’s about looking in the mirror and
accepting what we see. It’s about being grounded in the reality of
our own lives. It’s about affirming our commonality with all
others. Before God, we are all imperfect. We are all sinners. And
to God, this fact does not disqualify us from God’s presence. In
fact, God welcomes us into God’s good graces as sinners. There is a
great prayer said by countless good people over the ages: “God, be
merciful to me, a sinner.” Listen to how many times Pope Francis
openly declares his sinfulness. This is part of his personal
honesty, a trait which unites him to all of us, bringing him to a
place he wants to be. One of the most endearing traits of his
papacy is how he seeks to be with us not as “royalty” but as a
brother, a friend, and yes, as a sinner, which we are. Jesus did
not escape the judgment of him being at odds with the ruling
authorities, both civil and religious. He did not object to being
labelled a criminal. As is said, he was made a sinner for our sins.
The reality of sin and human imperfection is a primary aspect of
the life of Jesus, particularly in his death. To use human wisdom
to easily explain this twist of fate is impossible. God’s
forgiveness of our sins remains one of the great mysteries of our
faith. We only come close to understanding this when we admit, like
the man in the back of the temple room, that we are all sinners. We
need God’s merciful love. This is the true path to life with
God.
