Problem Statment

Currently the status quo method for cooking in Tibet contributes to environmental destruction, health problems and requires time consuming fuel collection. There is a need for a clean, renew-able and cheap way to cook food which fits in with the current routine of users.

Precident Cases

Factors:

-Daily usage of solar cookers common

-Social acceptance of solar cookers-Helps families save money

-Increased health benefits

“In response to poor access to fuel, users will take advantage of an additional, freely available fuel

source, whatever that fuel source may be.”

-Creates free time for women to generate more income

-Used in conjunction with other fuel sources

Precedents

Precident For Marketing Solar OvensPersons Helping People (PHP) is non-profit corporation based in St. Paul, MN, whose mission is to help alleviate hunger in developing countries. Their primary product is a prototype solar cooker.

“There is often initial resistance for using solar ovens in developing countries because it changes the way people cook their food. This initial resistance may be overcome with basic awareness training on issues such asair quality, inaccessibility and cost of fuel, and water pasteurization.”

Design Constraints

Constraints There are three different types of solar cookers:

-Box type -Parabolic type -Panel type

Common Constraints: The regional envionment tends to indictate the use and specific factors that influence the success of a solar cooker.

-Durability of Materials -Availibility of Materials -Efficency of Design -Daily Routine of the User -Transportation -Cost -Ease of Use -Cultural Stigmas and Bias -Dependancy on the Sun -Average Cooking Time -Weather

Recurring Ideas Heating of the Home Integrating into Routine

Concepts that Stuck: Through our ideation process, we continually latched onto concepts that addressed not only solar cooking, but also applications where we could help heat the home, as well as integrating the normal family routine alongside of the solar cooking solution. Our research indicated that the most successful solutions only added convenience to the daily routine.

Final Design Concept

Designs

Our design allows users to cook with the sun indoors. It also heats the house while not in use and will not cause

unnessesary fires.

How it Works

Designs

How it works: -Reflectors direct light through glass or clear plastic -Plastic and reflections create a green-house effect that generates heat -The heat retainer creates a constant flow of hot air. -Food left inside of the indoor cavity cooks slowly -Close the reflectors at night for insula-tion

Materials -Glass or clear plastic -Insulated sheet metal -Adobe for indoor support -Mylar or appropriate releflec-

We chose to develop our service based upon existing models and products. Our approach does not reinvent the wheel, it does however add speed, stability, and practicality to existing models used around

the world.

We chose a four pronged approach by creating a brand, developing the product, using existing distribution models, and expanding the

venture through franchise.

BrandA brand is a promise. We prom-ise that this solar cooker will save time, and not burn your house down.MarketingOur marketing angle will comple-ment our brand identity. Market-ing in this case = education and awarness.

FranchiseThe franchise mirrors our stucture in scope, it creates a local econo-my and helps to improve the lives of potential users

Brand Represents a Promise

1. To Save Time/Labor

2. Not to Cause a Fire

Reputation

KEEP CUSTOMERS:1. Customer Satisfaction2. Dependability3. Durability4. Low Cost

ACQUIRE CUSTOMERS:Advertise/Educate1. Sun is the highest = energy from it is the purest.2. Solar Energy is Better for you 3. Don’t Have to Collect Fuel.4. More Free Time.5. Pays for Itself - Money Earned with Free Time.

Distribution and Structure

Selco’s Organization

Plan for Implementation

Distribution:Our distribution model builds upon existing modes where uncommon recourses can reach users that live outside of cities or regional towns. We would use a franchise network to connect smaller regional towns to the manufacturing partners. We intend to integrate the distribution mechanisms with the overall fran-

StructureOur structure incorporates successful attributes of model NGOs. Our intended structure model allows for management techniques to travel between regional franchise offices alongside the actual distribution of the materials needed to build the solar cooker.

Examples:-Selco -Vertical Structures-Horizontal Structures

Core parts get manufactured by the main facility.

Peripheral parts get manufactured locally.

Proposal for Future Research

Remaining Questions and Future Research

-Material Availability, What materials are available to make solar cookers locally? --Could we make instructions that could be tailored to different material availibility?

-How to definitively measure success

-Continued evaluation of circumstances and conditions

-Cultural response to franchise model buisnesses

-How to design innovation within a diverse structure
