W e l i k e d i t so m uch W e stay e d.. .

Before the event had even started our

contest site was destroyed by a booming 5m

plus storm swell! So Portugal made us jump

from day one. It tested us and the surfers.

We moved back and forth to three different

locations scoring great waves everywhere,

Searching in the Peniche backyard. And,

as the finals arrived, we were treated to

stand-up barrels thumping the shores at

Supertubos.

We liked it so much we stayed...

Here we are again in 2012, and we anticipate

the same world-class waves and action that

we’ve seen in years past. Whether you’re at

the beach cheering with the locals, streaming

via our Rip Curl Live Events App or watching

with a million other surf mad fans online,

or on Live TV with FUEL - the Rip Curl Pro

Portugal is a must see stop on the ASP World

Championship Tour.

On behalf of Rip Curl, I would like to

acknowledge our friends at Moche, Turismo

de Portugal, EDP, Buondi Coffee and Ford for

their involvement. Importantly, I would like to

thank the people of Peniche and Portugal. It

is your passion and support that inspires us.

To our own crew running the event

- I appreciate everything you have done to

make this Rip Curl Pro world class.

To ASP officials - we are stoked as you are

with us and to be part of the ASP world title

race.

To the surfers - I wish you luck and may the

best man win - especially if he rides for Rip

Curl! (Just kidding...)

Rip Curl is the ultimate surfing company and

Peniche is the ultimate surfing town. Let’s

get it on...

Doug ‘Claw’ Warbrick

in 2009 asP brought the Rip curl Pro search to Peniche and it turned out to be one of our best chapters ever.

For us, Portuguese, it is a great pleasure to host all of those who visit us, no matter where they come from. and it is even more exciting when it comes to share the same passion for the sea.

t u R i smo de PoRt uga l , i .P.

Our oceanic culture is very ancient and

it is the reflex of a history of continuous

encounters with people from different

latitudes. If, in different times, we

overpassed the sea barrier, today we have

a contemporary vision, that cherishes all

who make of the sea a place of pleasure,

challenges and get-togethers.

This way, it is natural that Surfing has in

Portugal a bigger expression. We are not

missing the prime element, the sea has

always inspired us, but we also have a

strong, convict and sure vision of the role

that surfing can play.

First, for its potential to attract tourists that

want to do sport. Portugal is the perfect

spot to slide on the waves. If to all this we

add our well-disposed sun, our wonderful

fish and our natural capability to create

human relationships with every culture,

we understand the reasons why so many

surfers choose Portugal as a destination.

Secondly, because of the importance that

Surfing may have as a characteristic and

distinctive factor of our country in the

international market.

Rip Curl Pro Portugal, one of the biggest

world events, honors and confirms the

worldwide dimension of Portuguese Surfing,

and is distinguished by the organization

capacity, by the quantity and quality of its

spots, and for the good hospitality and food,

mandatory for a stay that will make you want

to come back.

To all, from the world Surfing elite, to

their families and to the public, we wish a

memorable experience, celebrated in all

languages.

Secretary of State for Tourism

it is the minimum attitude that we can have to host the best of the best in world surfing and all of those who don’t want to miss the fabulous show from our sea knights.

W e lcom e to Pe N ich e!

Four editions already! In each edition, twice

as much effort from all of us.

It is the minimum attitude that we can have

to host the best of the best in world surfing

and all of those who don’t want to miss the

fabulous show from our sea knights.

Our enthusiasm and our pride are magnified

because during these days our sea is the

stage of the most sustainable fruition of

our oceans and also because, through our

waves, it is generated a swell of promotion

for our whole country.

Thank you to all of those who help us to

valorize that which Mother Nature has

gifted us:

• To my, already a lot of them, competiting

surfer friends;

• To ASP;

• To Rip Curl;

• To all the sponsors;

• To all Media;

• To photographers;

• To all visitors

And to the “Peniche Team” that, this way,

help to consolidate the brand “Peniche – The

wave Capital”.

A big hug to everyone from your friend”

Mayor of Peniche City Council

Mick Fanning hopes a second Rip Curl Pro Portugal can help deliver a third world title.

“It was Supertubes at 8-10 feet, perfect and heavy as Pipe,” reminisces Mick Fanning on his quarterfinal in the 2009 Rip Curl Pro Search event. “It was an hour before dark, the last heat of the day and I needed a big score. That wave popped up, a perfect left and I knew, that was it, that was the one.” History shows Mick made that wave, went on to win the event the next day and secured his second world title at the Pipe Masters a month later. Both world titles showcased the very essence of Mick Fanning. His first in 2007 was a case of welding his obvious sheer surfing talent with a total focus, commitment and professionalism. “That first title was special, but it came at a cost. I had block everything else in my life

out, that was all I had,” Mick said. “I don’t think you can sustain that, it’s not a healthy balance.”2009 then was no less special, maybe just a little more enjoyable. After a mediocre start, Mick was relaxed, enjoying his life, his wife and his surfing. Then came that roll and that wave, and Mick had suddenly joined that rare club, a multiple world champ.

In 2012 Mick is, again, in the mix for the title. His surfing is as fast and sublime as ever, his attitude, if possible, even more relaxed and more positive. And if a ten foot Supertubes special comes through you’ll know he’ll go. It might just be the wave that helps him to a third win title.

What can be written about Kelly Slater that hasn’t been written before? What can be said about the greatest surfer of all time and one of the greatest athletes in history? Even back in 2010, when Kelly won the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, one of four tour victories on the way to a record tenth world title, he had far surpassed anything anyone had ever done, in any sport. Of course in 2011 he went one better, notching up an 11th world title as a 40-year-old. Not only that, but he again pushed the boundaries of both performance and competitive surfing, performing show stopping progressive aerials that had blown his competitors, many new school

specialists half his age, out of the water. He also won at Tahiti, in some of the heaviest and meanest waves ever seen in competition. This year Kelly is again in the driving seat on the ASP world title rankings, pushing for yet another chunk of history; a 12th world title. His drive, his talent, his contribution to surfing and his overall act means nothing is impossible. He simply defies all the normal realms of what is possible in surfing. Our advice is not to question it, or even try to understand it, but just make the most of his supreme talent while it is still on display on the biggest of stages like the Rip Curl Pro Portugal.

Going for a 12th world title, the greatest surfer of all time continues to make the impossible, possible.

At only 25 Adriano De Souza has a genuine claim to Brazil’s best ever surfer. Since bursting on the scene in 2006, the naturalfooter has steadily climbed to the very top of the world title rankings. At the end of 2011 he was ranked fifth, his second top 5 finish and he is considered by his peers as one of surfing’s most feared competitors.A smooth, powerful style, engineered in his home beachbreaks of Brazil is matched with an incredible determination to win and an overwhelming desire to improve - both as a surfer and as a person. It says a lot about Adriano’s versatility that his two 2011 ASP World Tour two victories came at home in Rio and at the 2011 Rip Curl Pro Portugal. The first in tricky closeouts, the second

held in some of the best barrels ever seen for competition, the heaving Supertubos peaks vastly different from the waves he grew up in.Yet those that know Adriano, or those that have followed his career, are not surprised that he is continually in the frame for a world title.Be it two foot beachbreaks or ten foot reefbreaks, De Souza will always be one of the most difficult men to beat in a heat. Coming back to the 2012 Rip Curl Pro at Supertubes, De Souza will be even more fired up (if that were possible) to defend his title. Always in the mix, always fighting to death and always delivering incredible surfing at hyperspeed, De Souza will always be a contender.

Adriano De Souza has proven himself as one of the world’s finest and Brazil’s best ever surfer.

Peniche

Peniche lies on a peninsula with a perimeter of approximately 9km and Cabo Carvoeiro constitutes the western part of it. The coastline is shaped by majestic reefs and magnificent beaches, home to a thriving fishing community. Widely recognised as the best and most consistent surf spot in Europe, the peninsula of Peniche offers a north and south-facing coastline. The result is the finest surfing conditions everyday regardless of the swell and wind direction. The Peninsula of Peniche will always offer a beach where the wind will be offshore and waves will be good. Along the 15km of coastline you will find more than 20 surf spots catering for all levels of surfing - from beginner to advanced. Most surfers in Portugal claim that Supertubos is the best wave along the coast and it is also highly rated as one of the best in Europe. It is a hollow barreling wave and only suitable for experts.

The Waves

The event will happen in one of two spots:

SUPERTUBOS

World famous break known for its perfectly tubular waves. This spot is famous for its lefts but mainly provides epic rights. Supertubos was acknowledged by Surfer magazine as being one of the best waves in the world.

The 2012 European Rip Curl Gromsearch series presented by POSCA is all set to finish in style, with the European final taking place during the Rip Curl Pro Portugal. The series has seen 12 different Gromsearch events held in four countries: United Kindgom, France, Portugal and Spain. In each boys and girls category, Under 12s, Under 14s and Under 16s, each country has crowned a national Gromsearch champion. These winners will travel to Peniche to compete in the European final. Up for grabs in Portugal is not only the chance to be crowned European Gromsearch Champion but also the golden opportunity to win a trip to the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach in 2013 to compete in the International Gromsearch final. For a stack of Europe’s best young surfers,

the Gromsearch series final represents not only the chance to pit themselves against the best surfers of their age, but is also an amazing chance to surf on the biggest stage in front of huge crowds, both at the beach and watching online. For these kids, the Rip Curl Gromsearch series presented by POSCA is a true stepping stone into the world of pro surfing. As an indication of its star finding capabilities, the list of previous international Gromsearch champions includes a who’s who of surfing such as five times ASP World Champion Stephanie Gilmore plus Jordy Smith, Owen Wright, Matt Wilkinson and Alana Blanchard. For spectators its a glimpse into the future, a rare chance to see who holds the keys to the future of European surfing. Don’t miss your chance.

What would you get if you crossed Malibu retro smooth and futuristic techno smarts? Well, you get Dillon Perillo, the wildcard, in every sense of the word, for this year’s Rip Curl Pro Portugal. The 22-year-old Californian is known for a ridiculously smooth style, almost old school in its buttery lines. Yet there is nothing old school about his above the lip act with his aerial repertoire featuring tech grabs, fins free control and radical, innovative commitment. In fact it’s hard to put Dillon in any type of surfing pigeon hole - he sluices through stereotypes, charms through known surfing categories. A true wildcard then, and one that could do real damage to the world’s best if Peniche dishes up the power and perfection it is capable of.

Perillo is also no novice when it comes to the biggest of stages. He’s been the wildcard selection in the last two Rip Curl Pro Search events in Puerto Rico and San Francisco, making a real impact, if not actually taking out surfers like Kelly Slater and Taj Burrows among others. His junior career also glittered competitively and despite the smooth style and carefree approach to life, a singlet, or surfing against the world’s best surfers, won’t constrain his natural talent.

He’ll surf as he always does, be it on the Search in the perfect waves of Indonesia, or at his home points of Malibu. He’ll surf for the fun and the thrill of it, with smooth power and real passion. That’s why he’s the wildcard, that’s why he is so dangerous.

Dillon Perillo’s smooth style, innovative act and relaxed attitude make him a real threat in this years Rip Curl Pro Portugal.
