Rio de Janeiro, the capital city of the State of Rio de Janeiro and

the second largest city of Brazil, is known for its natural settings,

carnival celebrations, samba and beaches. Rio's beaches, including

the famous Ipanema and Copacabana, are a main attraction due to

the city's warm climate. It also contains the biggest urban forest in

the world, the Tijuca Forest, which was completely replanted

during the second half of the 19th century.

Music and dancing are obviously popular in Brazil, but it’s not all

samba and bossa nova. Pagode, a slower form of samba, is very

popular in Rio. Hip-hop has also gained a large following in Rio.

In addition, no mention of Brazil goes too far without bringing up

the famous Churrasco, the all-you-can-eat meat smorgasbord, or the

Caipirinha, the “national” Brazilian drink. Though both of these are

definitely something you want to try, moderation is best for both

indulgences.

Culture at Rio De Janeiro

Rio is known for not only the natural beauty of its surroundings, but

the natural beauty of its people as well. Their beauty is much more

than physical; most possess an internal joyfulness recognized

through their welcoming smiles. Cariocas are known especially for

their lighthearted attitude. They joke about everything, which can

catch you off guard when some of the topics can seem a bit

politically incorrect. However, they usually mean no harm with

their words- humor is just a main way of dealing with things,

whether good or bad.
