Rio de Janeiro or popularly just called Rio is the capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro, located in southeastern Brazil. It was the capital of the Empire of Brazil since 1822, when the nation declared its independence from Portugal and retained that rank until the inauguration of Brasilia in 1960. It is the second most populous city in Brazil, has the highest international tourist traffic of the country and is the first Olympic city of South America.

The city of Rio de Janeiro is divided into 34 administrative regions, which include the 160 districts of the municipality.

It is one of the major economic, cultural and financial resources of the country and is known internationally for its cultural icons and landscapes, as the Sugar Loaf, the statue of Christ the Redeemer (one of the seven wonders of the modern world), the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, the Maracana stadium, Tijuca National Park (the largest urban forest in the world), the Quinta da Boa Vista, the island of Paqueta Feasts Copacabana New Year's Eve and Carnival celebration.

Rio de Janeiro attracts many national and international tourists who come to the city for its beaches, its varied cultural and nightlife.

Sugarloaf Mountain (in Portuguese, Pão de Açúcar) is a hill located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the mouth of Guanabara Bay on a peninsula jutting out into the Atlantic. Has 396 meters (1,299 feet).

The statue Cristo Redentor or Christ of Corcovado is a 38-meter image of Jesus of Nazareth, not counting the pedestal of 8 meters, with open arms showing the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is located 710 meters above sea level in the Tijuca National Park, atop the Corcovado Mountain. It was inaugurated on October 12, 1931, after about five years of construction.

Considered the largest Art Deco statue in the world, is recognized as one of The New Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

The Copacabana beach is crescent shaped and is dubbed Princess of the Sea.

It is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

The Jornalista Estádio Mário Filho, better known as Maracanã or its Spanish adaptation Maracana, is a football stadium in the city of Rio de Janeiro. It is the largest stadium in Brazil and was the largest in the world for a long time. Hosted the World Cup 1950 and will also host the World Cup 2014 to be held in Brazil.

The Brazilian Carnival is held annually the forty days before Easter Sunday. Usually the celebration nearest secular holiday that religious event takes place between February and March.

The Carnival of Rio de Janeiro is one of the most famous in the world, visited by tourists from around the world
