Meet the MRE team. . .

After studying tourism in Senggigi, MRE owner Mujiono – ‘Muji’ found his career enjoyable

but somewhat meaningless. In his home village of Sembalun Lawang, Muji is involved with

many community programs. He teaches English and technical guiding at several of the branches

of the Community Development Centre, and with that in mind he decided to start a tourism

business that would employ local people and support the village.

Muji is very proud of his staff at MRE who, like all friendly local people, always greet travelers

with a warm Sembalun smile.

Local History

Sembalun

Many years ago Sembalun was named Sembah-

ulun, ‘Sembah’ meaning pray, and ‘ulun’

meaning head/sight. The local people named the

village Sembahulun because they didn’t know to

whom they had to pray, and organized religion

was seldom. Local people followed only their

heart and to choose a religion was complicated.

After a time came seven ‘Raden’ (Messenger)

from Bali, Sumatra and Java to teach

Sembahulun people the specific skills of each of

the seven Raden, including religion.

The seven Raden were heroes to Sembahulun

people as they imparted their wisdom and

knowledge, which flowed down from generation

to generation like water.

Page 8: Rinjani Trekking

There were seven buildings made, one for each

of the seven Raden and are still maintained by

the local people to remember their heroes. The

group of houses was named ‘Desa Bleq’ (big

village), as this was the first village to be built.

You can see Desa Bleq which is now referred to

in tourism as the Traditional House in Sembalun

village.

Locals believe that the first humans in Lombok,

lived in Sembalun village because life is like

water flowing from the top to the bottom, and at

1150m above sea level Sembalun is the highest

village in Lombok.

Desa Bleq ( Traditional House)

Desa bleq houses were made from only five

materials:

- Long grass (ilalang)

- Bamboo

- Soil

- Timber

- Cow manure

Page 9: Rinjani Trekking

Each of the materials had a different function

and was used in a different part of the

building.

Long grass was used for the roof to ensure the

house was peaceful during rain and wind. The

houses were built so as the roof pitch was very

steep and the eaves overhung to almost reach

the ground. This protected the house and

inhabitants from extreme weather.

Bamboo was used as rafters, roof batons, and

walls and to secure the roof and walls to the

timber frame.

Timber was used in conjunction with bamboo

to give the frame and roof strength.

Soil was used compacted to create the floor,

stairs and terrace, the soil was built up so as

that the house was elevated.

Cow manure was combined with the soil to

make it smooth, warm and to deter rodents

from entering the house.
