EVERYBODY NEEDS INSPIRATIONInspiration is a peculiar thing, but it is almost a necessity in the process of idea development and untraditional thinking. We all know that artists need inspiration in or-der to be able to create, but in reality I guess we all need inspiration – whether we have to run a business, make well-founded decisions, innovate or sell, or if we want to always stay one jump ahead of the consumers.
CLOSE TO THE ESSENCEThe word inspiration is a compound of the two Latin words in (in) and spiro (to breathe). This compound makes perfectly good sense when you hear artists explain how they feel when they suddenly get inspired to create something new. They explain inspiration as a breath of fresh air which creates fresh thoughts and ideas in their heads. When you are inspired, you are close to the things which absorb you – close to their essence – and when you are close to the essence of something, everything just flows more naturally, and the great thoughts start to arise.
MY INSPIRATIONInspiration is a very subjective thing. Some people stare at a white wall for four hours, and all of a sudden a great thought comes along. Others need complete silence and work best in a remote cabin in Tibet. Personally I like to jump on a plane and travel to the inspiration.
When I travel, I always have a bunch of international magazines in my hand luggage. Then I use the transit time to look through pictures and familiarize myself with
the current trends of the big fashion houses. I also like to read books when I travel. Often I find great inspiration in books about architecture. They can tell you a lot about the current design and shape trends – and about what it takes to create something that will last.
When I reach my destination (e.g. to Hong Kong), I like to avoid the high streets. I find it much more inspiring to visit the smaller streets and places where it is some-times dirty and untidy – where opposites meet, and the art and originality can blossom. In Paris I always visit the department store La Fayette, which in my opinion is quite trend-setting, and in Milan the department store La Rinascente is a must-visit.
A lot of the impressions I “breathe in” create new thoughts and ideas in my head. Some of them never get used, but others I use in my work – e.g. when putting together this catalogue for our distributors.
GET INSPIRED!At Rikki Tikki Company, I of course get inspired by the work of our creative designers. Their universes are both creative and innovative – and I know that they originate from hard work, much consideration and thousands of ideas. The designers always make a great effort to create products which suit the taste of the consumers. I hope that this catalogue will inspire you and give your-self ideas of how best to inspire your customers
Enjoy!
Where does the inspiration come from? As you will read in this catalogue, our designers are inspired by a wide variety of different things. Some find their inspiration in the forest, from the light that shines through their windows, and others find it in conversations with other people. Personally, I mostly get inspired by reading and travelling.
6 ACRYLIC TABLE CLOTH / DESIGN BY SUSANNE SCHJERNING
Where does your inspiration come from, and how do you turn it into design on table cloths and bed linen? My inspiration comes from everywhere. Plants, colour combina-tions, scenery, or the way the shadow of a plant hits a wall...Intuitively, I collect my motifs and turn them into a poetic, atmos-pheric design, it is in the balance between the pattern, the fan-tastic stories and the composition, the crispness and the strength of the colours that I create my design. There has to be room for spontaneity and a twinkle in the eye.
Why do you often use the same motifs on both table cloths and bed linen?I actually do not do that anymore, but originally the two classical motifs ‘Happy Horses’ and ‘Deer in the Woods’ were meant for both bed and table. They still are, but never in the same colour combinations.
Your designs are often very colourful - do you deliberately avoid certain colours in your designs? In the past, I would probably have said black and grey, but now-adays I also use those colours, and have become fond of them.
I think that I have toned down the intensity of the colours a little, so my designs are not as colourful as they once were.
Has your design universe always looked the way it does today - if not, how has it changed? What is the inspiration for your next collection?I get the ideas for my motifs from the nature, which to me is an inexhaustible source of inspiration. With the hectic everyday lives we live today, I am convinced that it is good for us to be reminded of the peace that is under the tree tops. And of the great experi-ence it is to get close to the world of the animals.
My inspiration comes from everywhere. It can come from a mood, certain colour combinations, scenery or the way the shadow of a plant hits a wall. I hope that you will take a piece of my nature with you into your home and that it will bring you joy and harmony every day. My collections are not just about introspection and balance in the everyday life. There has to be room for spontaneity and a twinkle in the eye. So that you feel life and find out how you get the most out of it.

’One of my new designs this spring is the bed linen Running Deer. In this design the hand drawn background pattern sym-bolises the landscape through which the animals are running – they are all moving, tearing along by nature which I think is a great perspective on the animals. Moreover, when lying sleepless in bed, the many running deer may lead your thoughts to counting sheep thus lulling you to sleep’
All the bed linen is made from fine, ring spun cotton in a nice satin weave. This minimises creasing.
To preserve the beautiful and clean colours, we recommend that the bed linen be washed with the inside out and the zipper zipped. All the bed linen complies with the requirements of ‘Oekotex Standard 100’.

Susanne Schjerning: “In a meadow of wild flowers and grass, you see the watchful animals,
which walk around calmly - there is no danger. They are eating. It is quiet, a little foggy,
but still hot as if the sun was there. The shapes of the simple, beautiful flowers lightly rock
in the breeze. The forest is calling, and in a minute, they will be gone.
This is the soft, poetic mood which has inspired me to design this new bath series. I hope
that you will sense the light breeze and let yourself be embraced by the delicate, yet
atmospheric colours. May your eyes be pleased.
Enjoy!”

This Spring we have chosen to go back in time relaunching our wonderful melamine Blue Dancers, now redesigned for 2015. Over the years there has been an extreme demand for the original series all
over the world which we have chosen to meet with this redesigned series.
Where do your crazy ideas come from, and how do you carry them out?
This is a frequently asked question and the answer is that life as a whole inspires us – e.g. our surroundings,
travels, trade fairs, vacations, and magazines.
How do you renew an old design which has been launched before?
For this series we have improved the quality and added new products inspired by our love for life – we
hope these will inspire you to make your summer table look great and exclusive. Now try and close
your eyes and imagine yourself and your loved ones at the beach, in the forest, or at home in the garden
where you are all together – on a late summer night with the beautiful garden flowers on the table,
a glass of cold white wine and Blue Dancers dancing on the table all through the night. Then we are
just so ready for the spring :o)
Enjoy life and each other.

In 1997, Rie and Maj-Britt Bidstrup (daughter and mom) started Medusa-Copenhagen – at first as a shop, selling different pieces of art in Denmark’s capital Copenhagen.
In 2002, the wholesale company started. In 2009, Medusa-Copenhagen initiated a collaboration
with Rikki Tikki Company A/S, who now is in charge of production, sales and distribution of Medusa-Copenhagen. This makes it possible for Maj-Britt and Rie to concentrate
solely on designing and hand-shaping new, wonderful and funny pieces of art.
Since the year 2000, Én Gry & Sif has been designing beautiful, decorative and funny home and gift articles. The products from Én Gry & Sif are
hand-made in Nepal, and in 2009 the company was the first in its branch of trade to get certified by The World Fair Trade Organization.
Gry Staunstrup is the designer behind Én Gry & Sif. It all started back in the year 2000 when Gry and her sister Sif were travelling in Asia. In Nepal they
were fascinated by the local Nepalese women who made the most amazing things out of felted wool. They quickly discovered that this material holds many
possibilities:
“I think that felted wool is a very inspiring material to work with. It has a raw but at the same time very natural look. The possibilities of combining colours
and shapes are endless, and anything is possible. The only limit to the possibilities is my imagination and creativity.”
Since her first visit to Nepal, Gry has had a special love for the country and its people. Therefore, she is really proud to contribute to creating good jobs in
one of the poorest countries in the world.

The main objective of Elephant Parade is to support the Asian elephant in its fight for space, dignity and survival.
The Asian elephant is threatened with extinction. Its available habitat has declined by 95% over the past 100 years, and its population has gone down by at least 70%. Today there are less than 50,000 elephants left in the 13 range countries in Asia, and the remaining population is dropping by another 3.5% every year.
If nothing is done, the Asian elephant will be extinct in less than 30 years, and with this in mind, Elephant Parade works structured and determined to support the Asian elephant. Elephant Parade syste- matically donates money to a number of organizations which in differ-ent ways fight for the well-being of the Asian elephant, and at the same time, the social enterprise works hard to internationally bring focus to the critical situation of the Asian elephant – e.g. through its internationally renowned parades.
ELEPHANT PARADEElephant Parade regularly holds large, high-profile art exhibitions with decorated, life-size baby elephant sculptures. The elephants are de-signed and painted by artists and celebrities, and they are exhibited in cities all over the world. After each exhibition, a number of the elephants are auctioned off by renowned auction houses, and hand-painted, limited-edition replicas are put into production based on selected exhi-bition elephants. The profits from the auctions and 20% of the general
profits of Elephant Parade are donated to organizations which in dif-ferent ways fight for the survival and well-being of the Asian elephant.
With the parades, Elephant Parade internationally brings focus to the critical situation of the elephants in Asia, and with financial support, the company directly helps the elephants in their fight for survival.
THE INSPIRATION BEHIND ELEPHANT PARADE Elephant Parade is a social enterprise which was founded in 2006 by father and son Marc and Mike Spits. Today Mike Spits runs the company, and he describes the inspiration behind Elephant Parade as such:
”My father Marc and I started Elephant Parade in 2006 after my father had been on holiday in Thailand. On this holiday, he heard about an elephant hospital in Chiang Mai called ‘Friends of the Asian Elephant’, and he decided to pay the place a visit. Right away when he arrived at the hospital, he met a “little” baby elephant named Mosha who had tragically lost one of her legs after having stepped on a landmine. This was a powerful experience for my father, and right away he decided that he had to do something to help. When he came home, we launched Elephant Parade. We wanted to do something structural, some-thing that would be profitable in the long run. Only in that way, we can provide a future for the Asian elephant.”

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND EACH SINGLE ELEPHANTThere is a unique inspiration behind each single elephant, and as a result of that, each elephant is a unique piece of art. Elephant Parade fortunately receives the support of many talented artists and designers, and the fact that they each have their own, individual inspiration leads to a general difference in the expression of the many elephants. There is something for every taste. Up to now more than 800 artists and celebrities with completely different backgrounds have created around 1,250 unique elephants – each with their own, unique inspiration.
DID YOU KNOW……that when the elephants are auctioned off, the net proceeds are donated in aid of the Asian elephant? And so are 20% of the profits of Elephant Parade International.
…that Mike Spits used to be a competi-tive skier? He used to get his kicks by skiing down mountains with 130 km/h, but today he gets his kicks by support-ing and helping the Asian elephant.
…that the exhibition elephants are made out of fibre glass? They are around 150 cm in height and weigh about 70 kg.
…that an elephant has been carved in solid marble? It was made by the Swede Jens Klelund, and it weighs around 2,300 kg.
…that the most expensive elephant so far was ’The Singing Butler Rides Again’ by the Scottish artist Jack Vettriano? It was sold on auction for 155,000 GBP after the London parade in 2010.
…that people sometimes think that we are transporting live elephants when we come to a new city?
…that Elephant Parade has so far held 15 parades in 10 countries? The 16th and 17th have already been planned to take place in Bangkok and Brasil in 2015.
…that internationally famous names e.g. Ferrari, Ricky Gervais, Paul Smith, Katy Perry, Diane von Furstenberg, Bryan Adams, Leona Lewis and Sir Richard Branson all have designed elephants or offered support for the parades?
DISTRIBUTION OF ELEPHANT PARADEIn 2011 Rikki Tikki Company gained the sole distributorship of Elephant Parade miniature replicas and accessories in Europe. The founders of Elephant Parade have their head office in Holland where they concentrate their efforts on the organisation of new parades, copy-right, and development of the brand.
ARTBOX – AN ELEPHANT-SHAPED CANVAS So far Elephant Parade has created more than 1,000 unique elephants so there should be something for every taste, but if you would rather create your own elephant, the Artbox is perfect for you!

The founder of the design company ‘by Brorson’, Rikke Brorson, has designed and produced timeless home applications and lifestyle products since 2010. Rikke Brorson combines her
professional background and knowledge with her extensive experience and detailed knowledge about wildlife and the Scandinavian nature, in which she walks both as a hunter, a photo-
grapher and an illustrator. The fact that nature and wildlife are the sources of inspiration and focus for Rikke Brorson, is stylishly reproduced in her design with a soft and light graphic
touch, however, with a sense and respect for the natural and beautiful shapes of the motifs. By reproducing the motifs of nature in a graphically simple way, they are clearly accentuated,
and in an elegant way they get their own unique expression and life. From inspiration and the first idea to the lines on paper and to the finished products, a lot of time is used on details,
colours, expression and shapes. The concept behind the different graphic motifs is developed based on Rikke Brorson’s experiences, observations,
knowledge and history.
“Time is for things which make sense, and which have a certain duration. With nature and wildlife as my sources of inspiration, I design home and lifestyle
products under the name ‘by Brorson’. To me it is a mere advantage that the design of the lifestyle and home products of ‘by Brorson’ is very personal and
stylistically pure. The product range is continuously expanded and now contains new products such as tea towels and table cloths - both acrylic and oil.”
Rikke Brorson has chosen to concentrate exclusively on the design process of her nature and wildlife motifs. Therefore, it has been quite natural for her to
start a collaboration with Rikki Tikki Company.
Invite nature into your home with Rikke Brorson’s stylish design, in which a light graphic touch with a sense and respect for the natural shapes of the motifs
“Nino the Mad Mad Rhino is a great idea to raise people’s attention for the need of rhinos in the world. As nowadays poaching has hit all rhino populations really hard, we need to work strongly together in order to change the mind-set towards rhino poa-ching, to raise awareness and to find funds to help IUCN on its quest of saving the rhino.“
Mike Knight, Chairman IUCN SSC African Rhino Specialist Group
WhatNino The Mad Mad Rhino is created by well known designers. Nino is a fighting rhino, with one focus; getting the poachers out of his life by collecting money that will go to organisations that are protecting rhinos. And making everyone aware about the crisis facing rhinos through social media, websites, and having a presence in famous zoos world wide.
MissionNino is a global symbol for the fight against rhino poaching. Raising money and aware-ness in a fun way, for these beautiful and prehistoric animals across the world.
The charityFunds will be donated to the IUCN. The International Union for Conservation of Nature is the world’s oldest and largest global environmental organisation. The IUCN as well as the Rhino TAG work in close cooperation with Rhino Conservation Field projects. Money collected via Nino The Mad Mad Rhino will go to projects accredited by the IUCN and the Rhino TAG.
WhyEvery year more and more rhinos are being slaughtered for their horns. In 2013 alone 1004 rhinos were killed in Africa, 2014 was even worse. If we do not act now the num-bers will keep growing. Our children and their children might only know these beau-tiful animals from pictures.
“A strong collection designed for those who care
about giving back”
Nino The Mad Mad Rhino is a social company, where all of its profit will be used to save the rhino.
The designer behind the series ’The Jewellery People’ Karin Toftild about her creation: ”It was as if they had simply been waiting to be created. One day,
my hands just would not stop, and I looked up at the ceiling and saw a rainbow. For me this was a magical moment, and the fact that ‘The Jewellery Peo-
ple’ will now become available to others is to me a sign that the magic is still alive.” Karin Toftild lives in Copenhagen and has a long artistic career. She is
famous for her light, colouristic paintings and her ability to transform ideas and visions into countless beautiful paintings. If you would like to know more

Anna Nielsen went to school in the famous, Danish village Skagen, which is situated at the very tip of Denmark. At the age of 12, she moved with her family to Ireland. Anna went to secondary school and took her Leaving Certificate in Dublin, and later she took a Diploma in Architectural Technology. She married her fellow student Gerrard with whom she has three children. She works at home in her own ’Studio Gallery’ with design, art and publishing of books. Anna is a mem-ber of the IDI and the ’Crafts Council of Ireland’, and has participated at countless exhibitions. She has lived in Ireland for over 40 years, but she still holds on to her Danish roots.
Anna explains about the series of star signs: ‘I suffered from back problems and had to keep still for more than two months, during which, I spent most of my time studying horoscopes, and how they have changed over the last couple of centuries. I thought it would be fun to try and draw some myself. To me, astronomy is not a science; it is just something interesting and entertaining. I collected information about each star sign, and with a combination of that knowledge and a large portion of humour, I drew my
own interpretation of the star signs.’

The Danish artist Erik Lindberg has created a series of framed star signs, which is stylish and very original. “Contrast is an essential feature when I create”,
Erik Lindberg says. That is also visible in this series of star signs, where the main motifs are partly smooth, partly sharp-edged and very rich in detail.
Each star sign has three parts, but still they are very simplistic. The main part is of course the star sign itself. The second part is to be found under the star
sign, and it consists of three symbols - one for the planet related to the star sign, the Greek symbol for the star sign, and finally one for the element belong-
ing to the star sign (earth, fire, air or water). The last part consists of an animal which is the Native American lucky animal of the given period of the star
sign. Last but not least, Erik Lindberg has chosen to keep the colours of the star signs subdued to create peace and a beautiful, aesthetic look, but also to
make it possible for a family to have all their various star signs represented side by side on the wall without stealing all of the attention in the room.

‘Once I get an idea for a new pixie I start modelling and continue till it matches the picture in my mind. Then, I make a plaster cast mould and once the mould is completely dry I use liquid red clay to cast the pixie therein. When the pixies come out of the mould I give them a last finish and then I paint them.
The colours mean a lot to me. I have spent years mixing this unique, charac- teristic red colour. Some of my first pixies had a somewhat different tone of red than they have today. I could not stand seeing bright red pixies, so I wanted for my pixies to have a different red colour than other pixies - a more subdued, warm red colour as I love the warm colours of nature! My pixies are supposed to make people smile and bring forth their memories and moods from Christmas as it used to be.’
