we have had an event-ful year in
Ridgeland! Recently named one of the country’s “100 Best Places to Live” (Money magazine, 2007), in
2009 Ridgeland earned state and national recognition for the city’s Ridgeland Area Master Plan, or RAMP. This ambitious project, a comprehensive guide to future growth in Ridgeland, was honored with awards for engineering excellence and landscaping.
The people and businesses of Ridgeland already enjoy a prosperous and thriving community. A remarkable variety of busi-nesses flourish here. Families will find affordable, welcoming neighborhoods with excellent schools and abundant park and
recreation facilities. The historic Jackson Street District is just one of the
city’s charming and busy retail and service sectors. And,
a day of shopping
can be topped off with a delicious dish at one of the city’s several award-winning restaurants.
As evidenced by RAMP, Ridgeland is not a city content to rest on its laurels. We are growing and expanding, offering fami-lies and businesses more choices and ame-nities every day. A community-supported bond is funding construction of a new high school for Madison County, as well as renovations to existing schools. New construction on the Holmes Community College campus is adding first-class sci-ence facilities and classrooms that will allow HCC to offer more courses.
In short, there’s a quality of life here that you won’t find just anywhere. We welcome you to experience our Southern hospitality, culture, fun, and great people who make up this wonderful city we call home.

Just two years after city leaders and commu-nity members set in motion the Ridgeland Area Master Plan (RAMP), evidence of the
plan’s positive impact is being felt.Best described as a sweeping revitalization
for Ridgeland, RAMP focuses on eco-friendly strategies for the city as a whole, including a new city center, improved parks, and a dra-matic increase in green space. The plan also entails major redesigns of eight high-impact neighborhoods within the city — develop-ing green “cluster housing” for declining city blocks and enhancing ties between city schools and their natural surroundings.
“We are in the implementation phase of the master plan now,” said Ridgeland Mayor Gene McGee. “Citizens can expect to see major enhancements to the city over the next several years that will add tremendously to the quality of life here in Ridgeland.”
The “ramping up” of RAMP began in 2007. With substantial civic input, including public meetings and online solicitation, the city’s Board of Aldermen adopted the plan in March 2008.
Ridgeland leaders are quick to point out that RAMP isn’t just a plan — it’s an action.
“We were at a crossroads as a commu-nity,” said Ridgeland Community Development Director Alan Hart. “The plan has been an incredible exercise in bringing the community together, attracting new investment and creat-ing an exciting design that brings out the best in Ridgeland.”
Moore Planning Group was hired to under-take the creation of RAMP. Officials with the Louisiana-based company have praised Ridgeland for its vision and foresight.
“Our hats are off to the city and Mayor McGee, because they have been very involved from the first day,” said Moore Planning Group Founder and Principal Patrick C. Moore. “What is very important with RAMP
is that it’s not just a plan, it’s a ‘how-to’ — and there is a big difference.”
In fact, when describing the well-thought-out RAMP, Moore used the analogy of a person buying a new car.
“We’re not showing Ridgeland a brochure that says ‘Here’s the new Cadillac’; we’re creat-ing a blueprint that says ‘Here’s how to build a new Cadillac.’”
Moore and Ridgeland’s leaders aren’t alone in their praise for the plan. RAMP was awarded a Merit Award by the Louisiana Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects in March 2009. ASLA judges were impressed with certain elements of the plan, such as the new retail-rich city center. The fact that RAMP values green space at the same land-use level as commercial space was called “a bold move” that increases open lands by tenfold. According to ASLA, the green space strategy will accom-plish two important objectives: the prevention of development in flood-prone areas and the creation of an opportunity for a community trails system.
Another honor involving RAMP came from the American Council of Engineering
Companies. In March 2009, ACEC recognized Waggoner Engineering with its Mississippi Engineering Excellence Award for work on the Historic Jackson Street District, a historical area that now includes a community plaza, restau-rants, and shops.
As for the citizens of Ridgeland, they were not left out of the planning process. In 2007, during the initial steps of the process, resi-dents regularly attended planning meetings. Community workshops were held, and the city of Ridgeland’s Web site provided an Internet link where citizens could review the assessment materials and give their input via an interactive survey.
As the master plan continues to come to life, McGee said it is important for residents of Ridgeland to stay involved in RAMP, because the plan sets goals that will be implemented over the next few decades — not years.
“This is what we want Ridgeland to become, and these are the steps we’re going to take to get there,” said McGee. “We’re planning our future city and our future home.”

Barbara Harkins-Dickard opened her first store in 1973 and decided that she would continue “as long as it’s fun.” After moving to the Ridgeland area a little over three years ago, she is still having fun making sure the women of Ridgeland look great.
“I enjoy my business, I really do,” she said. “I guess the thing that has made Barbara’s boutique most successful is the
quality of personal service. When you walk into my store, you are greeted — immedi-ately — and I think that in itself says a lot. I have a great selection that’s just hanging, ready to be bought, but if we don’t have the right color and size, we can special order those for you.”
With new items arriving in the boutique every day, including mother of the bride cloth-ing, Barbara’s Boutique serves people of all ages and sizes.
“I do a wide range of sizes, not catering to any particular age group or size range,” she said. “I carry from size 2 all the way to size 20; that’s a huge range, but I do try to be very selective in my purchasing so what we have out there is good. That means I have a wide range of customer age groups. My college-age granddaughter wears my clothes, as do my friends who are my age.”
Great clothes coupled with high-quality service makes Barbara’s Boutique one of the
most popular shopping destinations among the ladies of Ridgeland.

Mad Genius www.madg.com
Mad Genius is a newly formed company born with the merger of Eyevox Film & Video Production and Mad Genius, Inc.
Eyevox, established more than a decade ago, grew to become the largest full-service film and video production company in Mississippi, while Mad Genius, Inc., has operated since 2005 as a groundbreaking creative and advertising agency. The two companies often collaborated on cutting-edge projects; now, they capitalize on the creative benefits of their alliance under the single brand name Mad Genius, a broad-based company that can handle advertising and public relations, design, interactive and Web media, film and video, animation and special effects, and more.
Rick Moore, owner of the company, was honored as the 2009 Small Business Person of the Year in Mississippi by the Small Business Administration, which recognized what the company brings to the region.
“We are bringing national caliber clientele to Ridgeland,” Moore said. “Whether we pro-duce a PBS series for national distribution or
we’re doing advertising for clients, anywhere from local to national, it is an eclectic blend of creative work.”
The merger has worked very well for the companies.
“With the combination of Mad Genius and what was Eyevox, we’ve formed what we call creative fusion, which is very unique,” Moore noted. “Typically, an advertising agency would not have a studio production arm like we have. We are able to produce, in-house, things that are great for the Web, video, radio — all media — and we can really arm the ad agency with the ability to perform for the client, which is pretty great. All of the creative leaders here can have all these resources at their fingertips, and it really translates.”

With a strong commitment to beautify-ing the area, Martinson’s Garden Works offers premium plants throughout the year as well as landscape services and gardening guidance. Martinson’s strong business sense has long been a boon to the Ridgeland community, and Mimi Martinson is very proud of the history of her family’s business.
“My father-in-law was the original owner,” Martinson said. “[Martinson’s] has been here through the history of the growth of Ridgeland; it was one of the first few businesses on Highway 51.”
Martinson’s has undergone a name change as it has been passed down from one genera-tion to another, but it has always remained in the same family.
“We changed names, as well as the look and feel of the place, with the growth of the city,” Martinson said. “We now have a full-scale landscape business here, as well as a large retail nursery.
“We have all of the things a nursery would have: trees, shrubs, bulk soil, mulches, and a large selection of bedding plants,” she contin-ued. “We grow our own bedding plants, and we have a growing operation on this site as well so that we can provide seasonal hanging baskets and color for your yard. We can grow what we want to sell, and it’s right here on site, so it is kind of a niche that we have in the market.”
Martinson’s also contributes its knowledge, time, and effort to the area through beautifica-tion efforts — donation of time, plants and expertise — as well as providing the city with ideas on landscaping.

Austin also works to make shopping at Repeat Street a fun and rewarding experience for her clients.
“I have so many customers come in and talk about how this is their ‘retail therapy,’” she said with a smile. “We’re in hard economic times, but we’re giving them this fun place where they can come and shop and get a great bargain and get this wonderful high-end stuff for just a fraction of the cost. We have customers who shop and who never have to spend a penny because they are trading their goods — they consign their stuff here, so they have cash in their account here. And they feel great because they’re shopping local and getting great bargains and having fun.”
Service Drugs680 U.S. 51, Ridgeland 601-853-4611
In business for over 15 years, Service Drugs offers a wide variety of services to the Ridgeland community, not the least of which is fast and friendly service. With delivery options available and a pharmacist who not only won’t keep you waiting for hours, but who probably knows you by name, Service Drugs offers their clientele the best in old-fashioned service.
“We go out of our way to help the customers — we like to say fast, friendly service is our name,” said owner Tommy Shields. “That’s kind of our motto; we’re going to get you in and get you out, no waiting. That’s how we compete with the big boys. And we sell everything from makeup and shampoo, to reading glasses, to diapers, to school supplies and paper goods. We have a small foods section and beverages — we’re like a scaled-down Walgreens or CVS, with more personalized service. And we take all the same insurance cards that the large chain stores do.”
Service Drugs also sponsors baseball teams, soccer teams, and bas-ketball teams.
“We try to give back to the community that sustains us,” Shields said. “We have fun with that — all our little baseball teams come in with a picture, and we’ll hang it on the wall. It’s fun.”
But Shields repeats that it’s in customer service that his business really shines.
“Probably 90 percent of my customers, when they walk in the door, I know their name,” he said. “And you’ll never be told it will be an hour wait here. We’re geared for five to 20 minutes; and if you wait
20 minutes, we’ve had some kind of problem with the insurance. We have the staff and the personnel to offer fast, convenient service.
“We try to stress to people, why go and wait and put up with people who are rude to you at some other business, when you can come here and be in and out in for the same amount? Fast, friendly service is the big plus for us — after all, we are Service Drugs.”

Location, Location, LocationAccording to realtor Juanita Kennedy of Kennedy & Co. Real
Estate, Ridgeland attracts homebuyers not only because of good schools, premium shopping and dining destinations, and safe neighborhoods, but also for its “location near Jackson, the scenic Natchez Trace Parkway, and Highland Colony Parkway (one of the hottest development parkways in the state).” Kennedy contin-ues, “The City of Ridgeland also has a lower tax base, great recre-ational opportunities for families, the Ross Barnett Reservoir, and the new Mississippi Craft Center.”
Bringing Back the PastEveryone appreciates a city that is able to maintain its
historical roots. Several developers are revitalizing Ridgeland by reproducing the architecture of its town center, which was destroyed by a fire in the early 1900s. One of these developers is Kennedy & Co. Real Estate. Steve Kennedy is building Olde Towne Square, located on West Jackson Street, which is sched-uled to open in the spring of 2008. According to Kennedy, “these businesses and retail shops will feature turn-of-the-century facades adorned with ornamental iron balconies, wide sidewalks, and large windowed storefronts.”
Even though Ridgeland is experiencing growth, the commu-nity maintains its Southern values and wholesome attitudes. We know our neighbors and care about each other. Come discover why we’re one of the best places in America to live!

Emphasis on education is one very important reason Ridgeland is one of the best places to live and work in the country. As Ridgeland grows
and improves, so do the local schools — from Madison County elementary schools all the way up to Holmes Community College.
Madison County Schoolswww.madison-schools.com
A well-known fact among educators across the state is that Madison County is one of the few counties in Mississippi with double-digit top-performing schools, and that includes the schools located in Ridgeland.
As the area gets bigger, so does the district. The Madison County School District just opened Ridgeland High School in 2002 and will gain its fourth high school in the fall of 2011, following the successful approval of a $61 million school bond issue in September 2009. Residents were glad to support their top-performing district.
“Our district is one of Mississippi’s top-rated because of the dedication and enthusiasm of teachers who share a common goal — to do what is best for students,” said Michael D.
Kent, Superintendent of Madison County Schools.
Kent said sometime in 2010 or in early 2011, advisory groups, including students, will be asked for input on a number of different issues involving the new school — items such as the new school’s colors, mascot, and a variety of other things.
“To a great extent it will be a student-driven process,” Kent said. “It is, after all, their school.”
The district has announced that the new facility will feature an “H-design” similar to Ridgeland High. It will be 150,000 square feet in size and hold 52 classrooms.
In addition to the new school, every school in the district will also benefit from the successful bond issue in the form of renovations over the next few years.
In the ClassroomOn the most recent Mississippi Curriculum • Tests, Madison County topped the state average in the number of students scoring at “Proficient” or higher levels in all grades in both language arts and mathematics.
Under the state’s new accountability system, • Ridgeland High School earned the highest rating, “Star School,” while Highland Elementary and Olde Towne Middle were both rated as “High Performing.”
Ridgeland High School NewsThe Ridgeland High School Forensics • Team has earned significant recognition by the National Forensic League. Because the chapter achieved 100 degrees or more last year, it placed in the top 10 percent of NFL chapters nationwide and qualified for the NFL “100 Club.” This award is important because it demonstrates the program’s commitment to teaching essential life skills — communication, research, listening, writing, and organization — to a large number of students. The Forensic Team recently competed at the Oak Grove Forensic Tournament, where they placed second in overall team sweepstakes.
As the 2009 school year began, Ridgeland • High School had its largest band in the school’s history, with 149 students. At competitions, the band earned “Superior” ratings at State Marching Evaluation, one of

only six groups at the site to do so. RHS also won the Pearl Invitational for the first time. In so doing, the band earned first place in all the band captions: Music Execution, Marching Execution, and General Effect and placed second in both color guard and percussion.
Ridgeland High School was one of five • schools in Madison County to earn “Star School” status, the highest rating under the state’s new accountability system. The new system bases its achievement rate on assessment tests, student growth, and graduation rate. It also measures districts and individual schools against the rest of the nation. Statewide, only 34 schools received the “Star School” ranking.

Holmes Community College Ridgeland Campus: 412 W. Ridgeland Avenue 601-856-5400 • www.holmes.cc.ms.us
Fall 2009 enrollment at Holmes Community College hit at an all-time high, according to admissions officials. The over 7,100 students districtwide represent an increase of 15 percent from the same time in 2008. Holmes’ Ridgeland Campus experienced an enrollment increase of 575 students, or 18 percent, to just under 3,800 students. All together, Holmes students signed up for 87,700 credit hours, with over 37,160 of them in Ridgeland.
“Amazing growth is being seen throughout the entire community college system,” Holmes President Dr. Glenn F. Boyce said.
Several factors have been responsible for this enrollment increase.
“Certainly the current recession is mak-ing a significant impact, as people look
to retrain for new opportunities,” Boyce said. “Our students recognize the quality of our classrooms and the high expectations we place on everything they encounter at Holmes. Our instructors are outstanding and are truly pas-sionate about teaching and learning.”
The college’s growth has led it to add a new 300-space parking lot, while the demands of the area’s health care industry is motivating a 1,400-square-foot addition to the campus’ science building. A long-term plan is to construct a $10 million allied health facility.
Other news from Holmes:
The Ridgeland Campus began offering • Friday, Saturday, and after-work classes. “Realizing our students have various edu-cational goals, we knew we must be flex-ible in our course offerings,” Ridgeland Campus Vice President Joe Adams said. “We have added other course delivery options, such as accelerated and hybrid courses to help meet the educational needs of our diverse community.”
Any student with a 20 ACT score or above • can receive free tuition if they attend any one of Holmes Community College’s many locations. There are three levels of ACT Scholarships: Dean’s Scholarship (20–23 composite score), President’s Scholarship (24–27 composite score), and Board of Trustee’s Scholarship (28 or higher). A stu-dent with a 20 on the ACT will pay just $180, which covers fees.
Chamber Junior Diplomat ProgramNow into its seventh year, the purpose
of the Junior Diplomat Program is to instill in students a well-rounded appreciation of community service and introduce them to the business community, said Linda Bynum, executive director of the Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce.
This year, 32 area high school juniors and seniors were invited to become a part of the Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce’s Junior Diplomat Program. Students resid-ing in Ridgeland who attend Ridgeland High School, St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, Jackson Academy, Madison Ridgeland Academy, St. Joseph Catholic School, Jackson Prep and The Veritas School are invited to submit an application.
Ridgeland Chamber volunteers Cheryl Mitchell of CenterPoint Energy and Jim Lowery of Pear Orchard Business Center serve as Junior Diplomat co-advisors. This year, seniors Kristen Ellis of Ridgeland High School and Timothy Crook of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School serve as co-captains of the program.
The Junior Diplomats meet the first Tuesday of each month at Chamber-member businesses. Throughout the year, they par-ticipate in many city and Chamber events, including the Century Ride, Easter Egg Hunt, KidsFest, Heatwave Classic, Sr. Adult Valentine Banquet, Trunk or Treat, Make a Difference Day, and the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast.
“Students interested in the Junior Diplomat Program must complete an application and
www.ridgelandchamber.com 17
submit it to the Chamber office,” Bynum said. “Every application is carefully read and reviewed. We want students in the program who have every potential of becoming tomor-row’s leaders.
“Each applicant must write a 100-word essay detailing why he or she would be a good candidate for the program. Every application must include three letters of recommendation, and one of the letters must be from a teacher, principal, or high school counselor,” Bynum added.
Other criteria include a list of all extra-curricular activities, awards received, and offices held. And, all applicants must have a 3.0 grade average.
“One of the greatest aspects about our program is that our Junior Diplomats have gotten to know others with the same interests and goals,” Bynum said. “They have become better acquainted with their community and are realizing the importance of giving back to the community.
“If we can instill one basic premise,” she added, “it is the age-old adage, ‘we make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.’”

Ridgeland’s roots as a community are strongly linked to the area around Jackson Street. Thanks to its prox-imity to important travel corridors
such as the Illinois Central Railroad and the historic Natchez Trace, this neighborhood was the first part of town to develop when the community was established in the late 1800s. The railway station was a central focus in those days, with businesses springing up nearby. After a fire destroyed this blossoming downtown area in 1901, the neighborhood was rebuilt primarily as a residential area in the years that followed.
Many years later, West Jackson Street became a significant connector between two impor-tant modern travel routes: Highway 51 and I-55. Recognizing both its historical significance and its renewed potential as a commercial district, the city of Ridgeland passed an ordi-nance to establish the West Jackson Street Overlay District. As a result of that action, and
subsequent supporting efforts, a trail was blazed for a growing number of exciting new commer-cial developments that hearken back to the look and feel of Ridgeland’s earliest days.
City planners knew that the first of these developments would be very important both in terms of creating momentum and in set-ting a standard for compliance to architectural codes that call for a historic ambience in the district. The city offered a performance-based Tax Increment Finance Bond agreement to bol-ster developer confidence, and Jackson Street Towne Center, LLC, began construction of Olde Towne Center, a four-building complex offer-ing over 50,000 square feet of office and retail space, complete with a cloistered courtyard, terraced piazzas, antique-style lighting, and turn-of-the-century façades. Three of the four buildings were purchased by Jackson Street Property Management in December 2006 and officially opened for business in 2007. Another development, Olde Colony, soon followed in
the southwest quadrant of the district, and the revival of West Jackson Street was under way.
While this initial success was promising, the Ridgeland Community Development team learned in their discussions with prospective developers that there was yet another obstacle to overcome. Questions over the district’s parking capacity had caused difficulties in raising capital for new projects.
“Financing was basically stymied because banks couldn’t get their minds around the shared parking concept,” said Ridgeland Community Development Director Alan Hart. “Ultimately, we created a Jackson Street parking area with 143 spaces to give banks confidence.”
The city of Ridgeland contracted Waggoner Engineering to create not only a decorative pub-lic parking lot, but also to transform the area with pedestrian-friendly streetscapes and add a com-munity plaza. The functionality and aesthetics of the project ultimately won Waggoner an award from the American Council of Engineering

Companies. For the city, the investment created the springboard needed for other developers like Steve Kennedy, who bought his lot and began planning while Olde Towne Center was still being constructed.
“Converting a residential area to a commer-cial area takes years to do,” Kennedy explained. “I was wanting to build, and the city wanted me to build, but I was boxed in on the corner and couldn’t get enough space for parking. The city’s addition of parking was instrumental in my being able to do the project.”
With the parking situation resolved, Kennedy & Co. broke ground on a vacant residential lot to create Olde Towne Square, which has two classically styled brick, wood, and iron structures and an Orleans-style courtyard. A mixed-use development opened in October 2008, its excess of 23,000 square feet is divided between retailers and profes-sional offices.
More developments, such as Olde Towne Crossing and a series of individual building projects, continue to add opportunities and synergy to the district. As it did over a cen-tury ago, West Jackson Street has emerged as a vibrant community and business hub for Ridgeland; paying homage to the past, but with a bright future.

Ridgeland has become a hot spot for dining out, as established local eat-eries and national restaurant chains combine to offer a bit of everything
for everyone. From individuals in search of fine dining to families on a budget looking for kid-friendly food, nearly 120 restaurants provide Ridgeland a variety unique to a com-munity its size.
As if to validate the flourishing foodie front, the Viking Culinary Group chose Ridgeland as the site of its newest cooking school — the Viking Culinary Center opened in August 2009. Joe Sherman, president and CEO of Viking, described the Ridgeland location as key because it “has an abundance of specialty wine and food stores and fine restaurants.”
Not surprisingly, Ridgeland’s restaurants have made frequent appearances on statewide
and national “Best” lists. Here’s a look at a few of Ridgeland’s award-winning dining establishments.
McAlister’s Deliwww.mcalistersdeli.com
Ridgeland-based McAlister’s Deli landed a spot on Parents magazine’s 2009 “10 Best Fast-Casual Family Restaurants” list.
When compiling its list, Parents examined the calories, fat, and sodium of each menu item. The health value of the food and range of choices on the kids’ menu made up 70 percent of each restaurant’s score. A survey of the magazine’s readers made up the remaining 30 percent of the overall ranking.
The magazine broke down the reasons McAlister’s earned its way onto the coveted list: “There’s a lot of variety here. Seven of the
nine choices on the kids’ are less than 500 calories. Let your children pick from these entrees and decide whether they’d prefer applesauce or a fruit salad for the side. And you should try the new fat-free chipotle-peach dressing on one of the salads; it’s delicious. If you’re lucky, you’ll live near a McAlister’s that hosts kids’ nights with balloon animals, raffles, and entertainment.”
McAlister’s, a quick-casual restaurant chain featuring counter ordering and high-quality deli-style foods, is well known for its award-winning iced tea, sandwiches, stuffed baked potatoes, and friendly atmosphere. It’s widely known as a good place to feed a family.
“We are delighted to receive this ranking from Parents magazine. At McAlister’s, we strive to ensure that our guests receive great, fresh food quickly and at a good value,”

said Phil Friedman, president and CEO of McAlister’s. “We also work to improve the lives of all children through our national Tea for Tots campaigns and other community events. It is an honor to be recognized for something that means so much to us.”
Friedman, who was part of an investment group that purchased McAlister’s in 1999, was honored with the International Foodservice Manufacturers Association’s prestigious Silver Plate Award in 2008 and its Gold Chain award in 2009.
The Parker Housewww.theparkerhouse.com
Long considered Ridgeland’s best-kept secret, The Parker House has earned the Mississippi Hospitality and Restaurant Association’s “Restaurant of the Year” award as well as Wine Spectator magazine’s “Award of Excellence” for its wine selection. In addition, The Parker House took tops in the “Best Outdoor Dining” category of Mississippi Magazine’s “Best of Mississippi” feature, which noted, “The Parker House’s cozy courtyard encourages conversation in the lull of the fountain.”
Considered Madison County’s destination for fine dining, The Parker House is headed by Chef Andy Cook, who takes pride in every dish. Originally opened by Steve and Barbara Parker in 1994, The Parker House moved to the “Olde Towne” area of the Jackson Street Historical District in 1999. In 2005, the res-taurant hired Chef Andy Cook, a native of Madison who had honed his culinary skills in New Orleans. Cook came home to Mississippi in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and landed at The Parker House. In 2006 he purchased the restaurant.
www.ridgelandchamber.com 29
“We’re in such a great area here, and people really are passionate about their food,” said Cook, who noted that his goal was to re-introduce customers to Southern cuisine.
Cook grows all his own herbs and many of his own vegetables, at the restaurant and at home. He also buys from several local produc-ers throughout the city and state.
In 2007, Andy’s older brother, Tim, a veteran in the wine industry, joined The Parker House. The brothers have teamed to continue The Parker House’s tradition of fine dining in a charming environment. They’ve also started some of their own traditions that are sure to keep awards and accolades flowing into the restaurant.
AJ’s on the Lakewww.ajsgrille.com
Since opening in 1999, AJ’s Seafood Grille has collected a trophy case full of dining awards, including being selected as Mississippi Magazine’s “Best Seafood Restaurant.”
In 2009, AJ’s moved to a new location at The Township on Highland Colony Parkway. Outdoor lakeside dining is part of the new AJ’s, and the excellent seafood remains the heart of the restaurant’s menu, alongside steaks and pasta selections.
John and Lucy Taylor created AJ’s, nam-ing it after their two children, Alyssa and Johnny. AJ’s has grown in popularity due to the fine food, efficient service, and friendly atmosphere.
Biaggi’s Ristorante Italiano www.biaggis.com
Biaggi’s took the “Best Entree” award dur-ing the 2009 Taste Of Mississippi and won the “Best New Restaurant” award from Mississippi Magazine in 2008.
The restaurant, part of a national chain, was the first business to open at the Renaissance Shopping Center back in 2007. It’s a fun, casual Italian restaurant that offers an exten-sive menu featuring a full selection of house-made and imported pasta, soups and salads, pizza, and seafood. The eatery has a capacity for up to 300 people.
Dwayne Rainer, Biaggi’s managing partner, said, “My team has been very pleased with the response of Ridgeland-area diners. Our reputation and the traffic has kept Biaggi’s full, both with regular customers and a con-sistent flow of new faces looking for good Italian food.”

Ridgeland has become a hub of rec-reation and sports, both for resi-dents and visitors to the city. Be it the Ridgeland Tennis Center, the
Ross Barnett Reservoir, the Multi-Use Trail, the Natchez Trace Parkway, or any of the city parks and playing fields, the opportunities for recre-ation in Ridgeland are endless — and growing.
Awards For Natural ResourcesIn the spring of 2009, the Mississippi
Urban Forest Council and the Mississippi Forestry Commission honored the city of Ridgeland and Mayor Gene McGee. McGee, who served two years as president of the Forest Council, was named “Volunteer of the Year” for his many hours of service, enhancing communities statewide through community forestry.
“Through his leadership and model proj-ects in Ridgeland, Mayor McGee has advanced the opportunity for city leaders statewide to learn about sound implementation of local forestry projects and how their communities can obtain the benefits associated with com-munity forestry,” the Forest Council explained when announcing the award.
McGee also was presented with the “Scenic Community” award on behalf of the city of Ridgeland. The award recog-nizes cities that excel in management of all natural resources. The city of Ridgeland was recognized for its “excellent examples of outdoor recreation, biking trail, green transportation corridors and its advanced urban forestry policies.”
Ridgeland Tennis CenterThe Ridgeland Tennis Center was selected
as a host for the United States Tennis Association (USTA) regional tennis champi-onships in 2009 and 2010. It’s the first time Mississippi has been host to USTA and its thousands of players.
The 2009 event took place Oct. 16–18 and, for tennis fans, it was a smashing suc-cess. The 2010 USTA is also scheduled for October.
Hosting the USTA created a lot of excite-ment in the state’s tennis and business com-munities, including Ridgeland. USTA league tennis is the world’s largest recreational ten-nis league, with over 100,000 players in its Southern Section.
“With this being the first championship of its kind, we are looking forward to showcas-ing our area as an outstanding host for large tennis events,” said Jim Petersen, director of sports marketing for the Ridgeland Tourism Commission. “This will be an opportunity to open many doors in the future for other events with significant economic impact.”
The Ridgeland Tennis Center features 17 lighted, hard tennis courts and is considered a full-service public tennis center.
The Ross Barnett Reservoir At 33,000 acres, the Ross Barnett Reservoir
is large enough to host boaters, fishermen, and anyone else who enjoys recreation on the water. For those who’d rather be active and explore on dry land, there are 17,000 acres surrounding the lake, including 48 parks and recreational facilities.
There are several camping areas around the Ross Barnett, commonly referred to by locals as “The Rez.” Coal Bluff and Goshen Springs are the most popular, as these sites are well-suited for family campers and include swimming areas, playgrounds, and shower houses.

Locals and visitors also have their choice of 16 parks, 22 boat launches, three handi-capped-accessible trails, two multi-purpose trails, and a popular mountain bike trail. For boaters and water skiers, there are five marinas. Sports lovers will find four baseball/soccer complexes and two golf courses.
For anglers, “The Rez” is a hotspot for lar-gemouth bass and panfish. The lake’s shallow depths and stumpy flats make it prime habitat for bass, and the lake hosts a number of fish-ing tournaments each year.
Multi-Use Trail Ridgeland’s Multi-Use Trail was begun in
the 1990s, with an initial five miles completed by the city in cooperation with the National Park Service in 2001. With a 2.15-mile exten-sion initiated in 2007, the paved trail now stretches over more than seven miles, running alongside several local roads and with a large section winding through scenic wooded ter-rain adjacent to the Natchez Trace. A 250-foot bridge reminiscent of a classic railroad trestle bridge takes the rail over Canadian National rail tracks, and side routes lead to schools and shopping areas. The trail, which has been fea-tured in fitness magazines, is extremely popu-lar with local outdoors enthusiasts, including avid cyclist Mayor Gene McGee.
Open to bicyclists, hikers, and joggers, traveling the trail is a great family activity. Leashed pets are welcome to come along for the journey, but horseback riding is prohibited.
Natchez Trace Parkway The area’s crown jewel for nature and out-
door recreation, the Natchez Trace Parkway was created in 1938 by the U.S. Congress, which placed the 444-mile scenic byway under the National Park Service.
Buffered by forests, ridges, and swamps, the Natchez Trace offers a number of recreation sites in or near Ridgeland: The Yockanookany picnic area, Ratliff Ferry, River Bend picnic area, and Cypress Swamp are just a few enjoyed by travelers on the parkway.
There are also campgrounds, water recre-ation areas, and hiking trails, including four miles of the Multi-Purpose Trail.
According to the National Park Service, the parkway was established to commemorate the historical significance of the Old Natchez Trace, a primitive trail stretching over 400 miles through the wilderness from Natchez, Miss., to Nashville, Tenn. The original trail is now paralleled by the parkway.

Mississippi Craft Center950 Rice Road Ridgeland 601-856-7546 • www.mscrafts.org Open 7 days a week, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Online store available
Opened two years ago, the Mississippi Craft Center does more than just sell artwork. It also promotes art, history, and culture in the region — and it’s an important piece of Ridgeland’s successful economic puzzle.
The immediate success of the center comes as no surprise to Executive Director Julia Daily, as everything sold in the center is unique.
“Very highly skilled craftsmen create the pieces here,” she said. “People come from all over the world to see their work — it’s the best of the best in the Southeast or all over the country.”
Daily is also proud of the center’s contribu-tion to economic development.
“To borrow a phrase from the Mississippi Arts Commission, ‘art is business,’” Daily said. “We make a huge impact in economic development here. We have been bringing tourists from all over the country and all over
the world since we’ve been open. We forecast over 100,000 visitors a year.”
Another vital aspect of the center’s mission is the preservation of the region’s unique and irreplaceable history and culture. Not just a home for the modern arts, the center is also a museum of American history.
“We have members from the Mississippi band of Choctaw Indians, so we have perma-nent collections that include Choctaw baskets and one-of-a-kind treasures donated from our members’ early collection. People can see museum-quality pieces — here,” Daily said.
The center is also a place to explore one’s own artistic vision. There are arts and craft demonstrations at the center most weekends, and there are classes for people who’d like to try their hand at creating works of art. Students from schools across the state come to the center on field trips.
Daily said the city of Ridgeland has been, and continues to be, very supportive of the Mississippi Craft Center.
“The city actually wrote grants to help us build the building,” she said. “It’s in their logo and motto, and they are extremely supportive
of the artistic community. A lot of our artists choose to live right here in the Ridgeland community.”
Millet Studio & Gallery – Mark Millet167f Moore Street, Ridgeland 601-856-5901
Defying the stereotype of the “starving artist,” Mark Millet has been thriving as an artist in Ridgeland since 1992. From painting commissions or Mississippi nostalgia pieces to teaching art and working on abstract can-vases, Millet keeps very busy here.
Millet got his start in Ridgeland in 1999, during the city’s centennial, when he created a poster on the subject of the founding of the city. His creative process for the piece was characteristic of his unique ability to build a compelling portrait from small glimpses.
“I had to do research on the early history of Ridgeland. It was like going back in time — you’re working from an old dingy photograph that you can’t see the details of, but if you have a photograph from another angle, you piece it together with the other details you’ve found to re-create the scene,” Millet said.

Millet shares his gift and love of creating with others, teaching two groups of burgeon-ing artists during his Art 101 classes. He also teaches high school students and makes a practice of encouraging artists.
“I love the kids. I remember them at that age, and I know how you can promote or dis-courage,” Millet said. I have adults say, ‘I had a teacher say I couldn’t draw, so I quit art.’ I am all about the positive.”
Millet finds plenty of inspiration for his art in Ridgeland, specifically in the bike trails that crisscross the area.
“From my studio I can walk to the [Multi-Purpose] trail, and during that time I am always thinking about paintings,” he said. “I’m probably going to do a show on the Multi-Purpose Trail — different seasons, oils, watercolor. It could be two or three years away, but I am already taking notes on where I need to be at different times in the day, to get that sun to come right down that bike trail with a little shimmer of reflection, to get a couple coming up and catching them in stride as they’re running.”
Clearly, Millet has a deep love for the com-munity whose beauty and people have allowed him to explore his artistic vision.
“Every time I go out there I see a paint-ing that has to be painted. This is a beauti-ful place that needs to be painted; there’s endless inspiration.
“I love the quality of life in this community.”
B. Liles Studio601-607-7741 • www.blilesstudio.com
A Mississippi native, Betsy Liles draws on the natural beauty of her home state for inspiration when she creates her custom jew-elry pieces. She utilizes a variety of traditional and modern techniques — including every-thing from hammer and anvil to hydraulic press — to produce fine fashion jewelry that is as versatile as it is unique.
“As a child I searched the wooded areas, creek beds, and gravel driveways, always finding great treasures … These things I col-lected ended up in cigar boxes to be hauled out and marveled over when inspiration was needed,” she said. “Now, with the techniques both self-taught and at the hands of master craftspeople, I have learned how to take trea-sures out of the box and apply them to the human form.”
Inspired by the handicraft of antique jew-elry, Liles’ creations are crafted not only from silver, gold, and gemstones, but also from other natural materials. An eye for unique color combinations is characteristic of her pieces. Liles and the fellow artisans on her staff custom-craft pendants, enamels, neck-laces, earrings, rings, and bracelets. All of the pieces are distinctive for their versatility. “It’s jewelry that can be worn every day and in several different ways. Most can be worn with
T-shirts and blue jeans, but can just as easily go to work or church,” Liles said.
No matter the selection, her custom cre-ations add a touch of class and a “something different” factor to any ensemble.

creme bruleé and a warm welcome. It is obvious that owner Paula Jackson has paid attention to every detail in the gallery. In the June 2008 issue of Southern Living Magazine, the “Home” editors wrote that Jackson Street Gallery was one of their favorite art shops in the South.
Various art groups have scheduled shows at the gallery, with as many as 25 artists rep-resented in one show. “Regular art shows are always going on, but to host various groups is one way for me to promote artists all over the metro area,” said Jackson. “Mississippi has some of the most talented, professional artists in the country. When hosting events, we have the opportunity to introduce a whole new audience to the works of our local artists.”
Jackson has also worked with several other retailers at Trace Station to showcase art in their windows and in their stores. This is not only good advertising for the gallery, but it also adds beautiful décor to the stores. “Many pieces of art are sold this way, and networking of this nature makes a very nice relationship with all the stores,” she said.
The gallery is also ideal for hosting a vari-ety of private events. Wedding parties, garden clubs, antique clubs, children’s events, fashion shows, corporate events, and more have all been held at the gallery. A full kitchen is avail-able for catered gatherings.

The Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce is keeping members and the commu-nity connected and making an impact through a variety of programs.
Take the Chamber’s Denim & Diamonds event, a ladies night out that sells out each year.
“Denim & Diamonds features a silent auc-tion of over 250 especially chosen items and a style show featuring the latest styles from our fine shops and boutiques,” said Linda Bynum, executive director of the Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce. “Chamber members walk the runway as models.”
The program, held annually at the Jackson Country Club, attracts some entertaining celebri-ties. Past entertainers have included country music recording artist Pam Tillis, Memphis rock ’n’ roll
group The Bouffants, Trading Spaces television personality Laurie Smith, “Sweet Potato Queen” Jill Conner Browne, and Cindy Cash, daughter of the late country music superstar Johnny Cash.
For 16 years, the mission of the Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce has been to encour-age an environment conducive to the con-tinuing development of new and existing businesses. With a membership of 950, the Chamber is comprised of corporations, ser-vice businesses, nonprofit organizations, and individuals who share the Chamber’s goal of promoting and maintaining a healthy busi-ness environment for businesses to succeed. If it’s important to business, it’s important to the Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce.
The year 2009 was exceptional for the Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce. With over 50 ribbon cuttings, groundbreakings, and grand openings, as well as 12 well-attended Business After Hours socials, the Chamber continued its mission of enhancing the economic vitality of Ridgeland by constantly setting new goals and offering fresh and innovative programs to chamber members.
In June, the Chamber sponsored a success-• ful golf tournament, with over 100 players competing for cash prizes as well as a 2009 Cadillac CTS donated by Barksdale Cadillac.

shopping extravaganza held in October and November, included 60 businesses showcas-ing their products and services. Shoppers could register at each participating business for the grand prize: a Viking Cooking School/Golf Classic package, including a private cooking class for six at Viking Cooking School plus four season badges to the 2010 Viking Golf Classic.
The Chamber’s Make A Difference Day, held • in October, raised money for Hope Hollow, a camp in Madison County for special-needs children and young adults. Through two bake sales and the sale of Gail Pittman ceramic crosses, the Chamber raised $3,500, the amount needed to install a lift to transport wheelchair-bound children from the first to the second floor.
The Chamber’s annual Mayor’s Prayer • Breakfast, with Dr. Jim Futral, Executive Director of the Mississippi Baptist Convention, broke attendance records from the previous eight years.
The Chamber’s Junior Diplomat program is in • its seventh year, with 32 students representing area schools. “It is our hope that this program will instill in our young people the value of community service and the importance of making one’s community the best it can be,” Bynum said.
The Chamber’s New Member Reception, held • at Northpark Mall, welcomed 75 new mem-bers, and the Chamber’s 35 Diplomats con-tinued to represent the Chamber as liaisons to the business community. These business and community leaders serve as goodwill ambas-sadors by attending ribbon cuttings, ground-breakings and other events.
“It’s an exciting time to live and work in Ridgeland,” said 2009 Ridgeland Chamber President Chip Sarver of Mad Genius, Inc.
The 2010 Ridgeland Chamber President, Scott Shoemaker of Shoemaker Homes, agrees. “As we celebrate our 17th anniversary in 2010, the Chamber will continue to serve as a strong advocate for growth and development,” he said. “Our programs will continue to deliver value to our members, and our networking events will foster strong business relationships within the community. With the fast growth in our city, our Chamber is taking a leadership role in helping to grow our economy and build a strong, solid community for generations to come.”
