Batavia head football coachRon Ogden welcomes the return
of most of the varsity players helettered a year ago. Only four donot return.“We’re a young team, but
most of the younger players
have got good varsity experi-ence,” said Ogden. “Eventhough we’re young we do havegood senior leadership. They’veworked extremely hard in the
off-season.”The Bulldogs’ head man cau-
tioned, “Despite having goodyoung players, six or seven ofthem will be sophomores andwe’ll probably be starting fivejuniors. They are all still learn-ing, but hopefully we’ll get offto a fast start.”Ogden believes his standouts
on offense will be senior full-back David Lenhardt (5-feet,11-inches, 170-pounds), juniorquarterback Jake Riley (5-11,170), sophomore fullback RyanGormley (5-11, 220), sopho-more running back Zainn Ison(5-3, 145), sophomore receiverGabe Archer (6-1, 180), andforemost among the blockers onthe line will be junior tackleDave Pelphrey (6-3, 275).The defense will be paced by
junior strong safety AaronWood (5-7, 175), senior defen-sive end Dave Brausch (5-11,230), a transfer from ClermontNortheastern High School, junior defensive end NickBonavita (5-11, 195), Gormley
at middle linebacker, Archer atlinebacker, and Pelphrey attackle. From the Batavia viewpoint,
defending Southern BuckeyeConference (SBC) NationalDivision champion, the EastClinton Astros are expected tobe very tough this season indefense of their crown, and inthe overall conference WesternBrown’s Broncos should be out-standing.The former head coach at
Amelia High School, Ogdenbelieves the addition of theBarons to the Southern Buckeye“will take them a couple ofyears” to work themselves backinto the competition and that thewestern Clermont countianswill find the SBC, in particular,Goshen New Richmond, andWestern Brown, as “tougherthan people think.”

Wayne Stacy has returned tohis alma mater to becomeBethel-Tate High School’shead varsity football coach.During his prep athletic careerhe was a Southern BuckeyeConference (SBC) all-star onthe gridiron and was amongconference’s best in touch-downs scored, and totalreceiving yards combiningwith quarterbacks TerryMcElfresh and EddieMcMahan to be GreaterCincinnati leaders in the afore-mentioned statistics. He brings to the Fighting
Tigers “high expectations. Wehave a solid group of seniorswho expect to win. It’s excit-ing, too, that our numbers areup to 52 that are out for theteam,” he said.Bethel-Tate will be building
its offense around “two of ourthree leading rushers back andexperience at quarterback andoffensive line, but we havesome holes to fill up front (onthe offensive line) and weneed to have players who willstep up and fill those holes.”
In the experienced Bethelbackfield will be senior slotback Brian Myers (5-feet, 10-inches, 175-pounds) andjunior tailback Zach Mullins(6-2, 220). The quarterbackwill be junior Erik Shinkle (5-11, 175). They will receiveexperienced blocking fromsenior four-year varsity tackleJordan Reinhart (6-2, 260),senior three-year varsity guardTanner Wolffram (5-10, 255),and junior tackle DavidHammock (6-4, 265).Stacy is looking forward to
good defensive performancesfrom senior middle linebackerIzzy Toney (5-8, 185), juniorfree safety Matt Small (5-10,130), who intercepted threepasses last year, Myers at cor-nerback, and Hammock atend.“We’ve had back-to-back
.500 seasons, but no one is sat-isfied with just playing fiveand five. We’re going to playwith the expectation towin,”Stacy said. His familiarity with
Southern Buckeye Conferenceand Clermont County highschool football leads him tobelieve that New Richmond’sLions, Goshen’s Warriors, andWestern Brown’s Broncos willbe tough in the SBC-AmericanDivision and the addition ofnew conference and divisionmember, Amelia, will makethe level of competition eventougher. The Tigers’ head hon-cho also believes thatClermont Northeastern’sRockets will be “muchimproved” and would be verydangerous to be overlooked.

the Broncos will need to improveis in time of possession.“Last year, we found ourselves
down early before we got into therythm of the game,” added Dreyer.“We’re working on controlling thetime of possession.”The coach also mentioned that
numbers were down in the sopho-more class, which is an area ofconcern for the future. In the Southern Buckeye
Conference, the Western coachsees Goshen, New Richmond andAmelia competing with hisBroncos for the top spot.“It should make for a fun race,”
said Dreyer. “Goshen has return-ing starters. New Richmond has agood program. Amelia is just com-ing into the league, looking tomake a statement. It should come
down to the end and we should beright there.”With the changes in offense,
eyes will be on second-year quar-terback Matty Corcoran.“We have a talented group of
receivers,” said Dreyer. “If Mattyplays every game to his potential,we’ll see where it leads.”Assisting Dreyer on the side-

The Western Broncos, undersecond-year coach Evan Dreyer, are expecting to improve upon lastyear’s 4-6 finish.“We only lost 10 seniors from
last year’s team,” said Dreyer.“Our junior varsity was 6-3 andwe have several guys returning tovarsity play.”The Broncos return seniors

juniors Jordan Haggerty, SpencerHoward, Daniel Lewis, MattLoudwick, Kevin McCoy, AndrewWhite, Zac Wilson and NickWoodyard; sophomores JakeMorrison and Gunner Woodyard.New to varsity play this year are
Tim Cecil, Brad Hinkle, JakeLawson, Nick Orr, Kaden Piatt,Scotty Ryan, Garrett Taylor andCooper Thatcher.“Our tempo will be a lot faster,”
said Dreyer. “We have five or sixgood receivers and we must getthem in space.”Speed will not only be a factor
on offense, but on defense as well.“We’re also playing faster on
defense,” added Dreyer. “We havea lot of guys who can run. Wemust utilize our speed and intelli-gence all over the field.”Fans will notice a distinct dif-
ference in the offensive approach
this year.“I wanted to be a triple-option
team when I first got here,” saidDreyer. “But when we looked atnow and the future, we realized weneeded to change. We revampedour offense to give more guysmore opportunities to touch thefootball now and in the future.”Twenty-eight days after last
year’s final contest, the Broncoschanged the way they looked atthe entire season as well.“We want to start fast and finish
strong,” said Dreyer. “This groupof guys has worked hard all year. They will show that hard work
pays off. We have a very positiveoutlook.”Strengths of this year’s squad
will lie in numbers and experi-ence, along with the attitude.“We have more options offen-
sively,” said Dreyer. “These guysare really a ‘blue collar’ group andwant to win. Their willingness todo the work to win has changed. Our leadership and experience arethere. The new Rockets have“good senior leadership. Wehave 15 seniors and that’s agood number for us. Manyare three-year varsityseniors. We have good, young kids that will push theseniors. . . The New Richmond varsityfootball squad has set its goalto advance its program togreater glory. Head coach
Dan Scholz lost 13 playersfrom his successful Lions of ayear ago. He welcomes thereturn of 15 “committed”seniors.“We’ve got strong senior
leadership. They understand
what we need to do this year. We’ll have strength in the(offensive) backfield and thelinebackers, safeties, andsome defensive linemen. . .“We have an inexperienced
offensive line at some posi-tions. We need to replacesome key players from lastyear.”Senior Garrett Myers will
lead the offense from hisquarterback position handingthe ball off to veteran runningback Nick Williams, a senior,
and throwing the pigskin toveteran receivers JoeyMcCabe and Mikes Derkson, both seniors. The defense will build itself
around linemen Cody Dellerand Marty Mahaffey, bothseniors, senior linebackerAustin Ward, junior line-backer Danny Scholz, andjunior safety Jake Gundler.Scholz is anxious to prove
the talent of his charges andanxious to get started against“a schedule that has increased
somewhat. We’re playing afew tougher teams looking toimprove ourselves and to takeour program to the next stepand to get better each week.”The Lions’ head mentor
expects the defendingSouthern BuckeyeConference American (SBC-A) Division championGoshen Warriors and WesternBrown’s Broncos to be themajor obstacles to the Redand Black’s charge to the con-ference title and that newSBC-A member, Amelia, willalso provide “tough” compe-tition.

The Fayetteville Rockets willbe playing their first year of full-time varsity football this season. The Rockets are also under newleadership in first-year head coachBen Brisker.“Being a head coach is a big
difference,” said Brisker. “thisseason there is a lot more respon-sibility with paperwork and keep-ing things running well.”Brisker is no stranger to the
game. He served as defensivecoordinator last year atFayetteville. He has also served as
an assistant coach at Westfall (oneyear) and Circleville (five years).Brisker, a graduate of Ohio
University and Circleville HighSchool, is in his second year as aspecial education teacher in theFayetteville Schools. He and hiswife, Lori, who is expecting thecouple’s first child in November, currently reside in Blanchester.“I am very excited about this
being Fayetteville’s first yearplaying full varsity,” said Brisker.“We have 30 kids in grades 9through 12 participating.”Back from last year’s squad,
which played to a 1-4 record infive varsity contests, are seniors
Bryan Jent, Phil Wagers, EricWilliams, Cody Boyer and DanMetzger; juniors Tanner Williams,Jarrod Lindsey, Michael Kranz,Dave Kranz, Joey Burwinkel andLuke Allen; sophomores AnthonyReed, Stephen Pappas, AustinCaldwell and Dave Watts.New to varsity play are seniors

Look for the Rockets to run anunbalanced spread on offense, with a balanced run and passattack.“We have a great offensive
line,” said Brisker. “We are look-ing for big things out of our expe-rienced players. We want to havea 50/50 run/pass balance onoffense.”Defensively, the Rockets will
feature a 5-2 shade. Fayettevillehas an experienced defensive lineand the Kranz brothers are back atthe linebacker positions.“We are expecting those guys
to be leaders,” said Brisker. “Weare hoping to get a lot of rest forour players by spot-playing the
sophomores and freshmen. Theyounger guys will have to be a bigpart of our special teams.”Last season, Fayetteville
played against five varsity teamsin Ross Southeastern, Gallatin(Kentucky), Manchester, FairfieldChristian and Lockland. Thosefive opponents are back on theschedule this year.“We have everybody back from
last year, so that should be anadvantage,” added Brisker. “Weare used to the speed of the varsi-ty game and most of our playershave had a taste of football at thevarsity level.”The Rockets are flying with
some high expectations in theirinagural year on the varsity grid-iron.“We want to be 9-0 going into
the Lockland game,” said Brisker.“They are always a powerhouse inDivision VI. We are aware of theplayoffs and how they work. Wehave to get the kids believing thatwe can do it.”Brisker will be assisted on the
sidelines this season by CoryHanes, offensive coordinator andjunior high coach, HarleyMcCullough, offensive and defen-sive line coach, and Steve Shaw, junior high assistant. The Rockets will be playing
their home games at Goshen HighSchool this season, as their fieldwill not be ready until next year.“We really appreciate Goshen

Having lost just five letter-men from a year ago, GlenEste head football coach ZakTaylor is understandablyenthusiastic about theupcoming campaign.“We have 24 seniors on the
team so we definitely aregoing to have good leader-ship,” Taylor said. “We’vegot really good skilled kidson both sides of the ball.”If the Trojans have a weak-
ness, Taylor believes it willbe that his charges are “a lit-tle bit small up front. We’re
going to have some new line-men.”Taylor expects his leaders
on offense will be senior run-ning back Austin Duncanson(5-feet, 11-inches, 175-pounds), senior running backCollin Pitman (5-9, 225), andsenior quarterback ShaneSeckman (6-4, 210). Eachwill be beginning their thirdyear as starters for the varsi-ty.On the defensive side of
the football, a quartet isexpected to spearhead thePurple and White - Pitman atlinebacker, senior Matt Jones(6-2, 185) at outside line-

improved. We have highexpectations to win theleague and to make the play-offs,” Taylor said.He predicts the Buckeye
Division of the Fort AncientValley Conference will be“more balanced than it’s everbeen,” but if anyone has justone step ahead of the rest ofthe conference, it would beWinton Woods’ Warriorsand/or Anderson’s Redskins.“The way the league is this

The Fayetteville Rockets willbe playing their first year of full-time varsity football this season. The Rockets are also under newleadership in first-year head coachBen Brisker.“Being a head coach is a big
difference,” said Brisker. “thisseason there is a lot more respon-sibility with paperwork and keep-ing things running well.”Brisker is no stranger to the

an assistant coach at Westfall (oneyear) and Circleville (five years).Brisker, a graduate of Ohio

being Fayetteville’s first yearplaying full varsity,” said Brisker.“We have 30 kids in grades 9through 12 participating.”Back from last year’s squad,

feature a 5-2 shade.

This senior class had somebrothers who played on the play-off team. They want to get back towinning ways.”One area of the game in which

In the Southern Buckeye

tioned, “Despite having goodyoung players, six or seven ofthem will be sophomores andwe’ll probably be starting fivejuniors. They are all still learn-ing, but hopefully we’ll get offto a fast start.”Ogden believes his standouts

defending Southern BuckeyeConference (SBC) NationalDivision champion, the EastClinton Astros are expected tobe very tough this season indefense of their crown, and inthe overall conference WesternBrown’s Broncos should be out-standing.The former head coach at
Amelia High School, Ogdenbelieves the addition of theBarons to the Southern Buckeye“will take them a couple ofyears” to work themselves backinto the competition and that thewestern Clermont countianswill find the SBC, in particular,Goshen New Richmond, andWestern Brown, as “tougherthan people think.”
