The President’s Message...........
It’s growing season and things are certainly growing, it seems the weeds more than
anything else. And of course, it’s hard to get outside to weed in the rain. On the bright
side, the weeds are easy to pull.

each need to go to the fairground gate near the red barn (the back gate) and identify ourselves as Master Gardeners

the meeting site. Our meeting will take place behind the 4-H office. We will have a short business meeting, tour the
flower beds maintained by MGV, check out the MVG display and then visit nature garden.
Hope to see you there.

The meeting took place at Kingwood Center Gardens, a potluck of a variety of delicious dishes began at 6:00 PM.
Guest speaker Pamela Bennett presented at 6:45 PM the program “Darn I Wish I’d Known That. –Avoid These Top
Garden Mistakes.” OSU Extension agent Judy Villard Overocker was recognized for agreeing to oversee the Richland
County Master Gardner Volunteers when OSU made staff cut backs. SOIL TEST was the phrase for the day and highly
recommended. Also discussed was No Till, fertilizer as not a plant food, improper planting of trees, and the book
‘Gardenpedia’. Her dynamic and extremely informative presentation was well received. Pam graciously autographed
her book ‘Gardenpedia’ after the program.

Changing the garden’s name and composing a mission statement was discussed. It was suggested that John Hildreth
from Richland Soil and Water Conservation District be contacted as the nature garden borders the District’s building.
No action was taken on compiling a mission statement.

Notes from the Editor................
Moving On............
Some of us have had the opportunity to know and volunteer with Kathy Mambourg. I do not know Kathy well but I do remember the first time I met her. I was a Master Gardener Intern, working on my hours and chose to volunteer at Kingwood one morning. I was introduced to the group I was to work with (under) and Kathy was in the group that particular morning. She made an effort to make me feel at home and I not only enjoyed the beautiful surroundings at Kingwood Center Gardens but got a kick out of her stories and her infectious laughter! Kathy probably doesn’t even realize the impact she has on folks, her willingness to help others is never ending and always
present is that smile.
Kathy will be leaving us and moving to Columbus to be near her daughter and soon to be expanded family. We will miss her but will keep close to our hearts the many memories we have of her and her time with the Master Gardeners.
Good luck Kathy in your new endeavors and we wish you the very best !!

Good company, food and great speaker at last MG Meeting.................
Nature will bear the closest inspection. She invites us to lay
our eye level with her smallest leaf, and take an insect view of
its plain.

August 1....Community Garden Bike/Walk Tour in Mansfield, starting at 10am. The tour will begin at the
NECIC office (199 N. Main St, Mansfield) and feature up to 9 local gardens
For the second year, NECIC and local community garden leaders are partnering with Richland Moves! bike
group. This year, the Master Gardeners have the opportunity to play an expanded role. Josh, Mona, and I are all
helping with the planning efforts, along with many others. Volunteer opportunities!
-Join us at the planning team meetings
-Set up and man (about 1-hour) an MG display table (esp. MG outreach and vegetable gardening info) at the
NECIC office for people to view during the registration process on the morning of Aug. 1
-Accompany either a walk or bike group on the tour Aug. 1 - sharing plant info along the way (most gardens will
have a community garden organizer on site, but last year feedback from participants mentioned that it would have
been nice to have a plant expert with each group.) Those who are interested in helping with this will meet the week
before and preview the tour so we can identify interesting (or invasive) plants, etc.
-Help gardens on the tour spruce up as needed - i.e. garden maintenance/weeding (work dates TBD, 1-2 weeks
