There’s no quick fix to all the traumas of being a teen, but at least Dermalogica has come up with a great new tonic for that biggest horror of adolescent horrors – zits! Dermalogica’s new Clean Start skincare range couldn’t have been better timed for son Sam. Now aged 15, he has spent most of his tender teens trying to keep the ravages of spots at bay, with lotions and potions cluttering up his bedroom and the family bathroom – we even picked up a prescription from the doc’s as a last resort. But alas, it was all in vain – slowly it dawned on us that Sam – and my purse – were losing ground in the battle of the breakouts, so perhaps it was best to let nature take its course. And then Dermalogica unveiled its new Clean Start range, which is formulated especially for sensitive teen complexions. I’m a big fan of Dermalogica anyway, and Sam didn’t take much persuasion to give it a go. There are eight products to choose from, so everyday cleansing routines can be tailored to specific needs (see panel). The range is very teen-friendly, looks as good as it feels, and is very light and easy to use. The emphasis is very much on skin health, rather than ‘beauty’, and Clean Start doesn’t contain any artificial fragrances or colours, stripping alcohol or aggressive ingredients which irritate the skin, and can actually encourage the excess oiliness which leads to spots. Despite the myriad “distrac- tions” of teen life, Sam quickly settled into a skincare routine – religiously cleansing, toning and moisturising every day. At the time of writing, he has been using Clean Start for three weeks, and the difference is quite astonishing. It’s by no means a miracle cure, but the angry red breakouts on his face and neck have receded substantially, and there have been no major new flare-ups.
