Richards ability to bring together the best team for a job, coupled with a clear design focus and intuitive understanding of how cities and people interact have ensured a string of successful commissions and projects and made a major impact on contemporary architecture.

Key projects include the Centre Pompidou, Paris, Lloyds of London and Terminal 4 Madrid Barajas Airport.

Since founding the practice in 1977, Richard Rogers has gained international reknown as an architect and urbanist.

PHILOSOPHYCities are the physical framework of our society, the generator of civil values, the engine of our economy and the heart of our culture.

In England, one of the three most densely populated countries in the world, 90% of the population live in cities, but many of our urban centres are not sustainable.

Large areas of dereliction, poverty and empty quarters, destroy the sense of community and vitality, urban sprawl erodes our countryside.

Compact polycentric cities are the only sustainable form of development and should be designed to attract people. If we don't get urban regeneration right then all our work on cities - buildings and public spaces, education, health, employment, social inclusion and economic growth - will be undermined.

Sustainable urban development is dependent on three factors;the quality of architecture, social well-being and environmental responsibility.

The compact sustainable city is multi-cultural with a hierarchy of density, has a mix of uses and tenures, is well connected with a coherent public transport, walking and cycling infrastructure, is well designed both in terms of public spaces and building, and is environmentally responsive.

BOWELLISMArt in the Ugly Side of Architecture

Richard rogers is best know for his bold futuristic architecture, mainly expressed by its inside out nature of structure and building services, which many have called bowellism.

Where ventilation ducts, hot water pipes and electrical conduits are considered ugly and are typically hidden behind walls and ceilings, Rogers has made an effort change how we perceive architecture by exposing them on the outside of the building.

Scandicci masterplan

Shanghai masterplanScandicci is strategically located 10 km to the west of Florence. Due to its proximity to motorway A1, it can potentially act a Gateway to Florence. A new tramline linking Scandicci with Florence will act as a catalyst to reposition Scandicci as a key Tuscan city for the 21st century.

RRPs approach to this masterplan has been to view Scandicci within the wider context - not as a suburb of Florence but as a destination within the Tuscany region. In this way Scandiccis status can be enhanced as a pivotal town linking Florence with other major hubs such as Pistoia and the Chianti area.

RRPs scheme aims to create the appropriate infrastructure and environment to attract a diversity of economic drivers and activities. By creating educational, employment and residential opportunities, daytime population will increase, while strong linkages between the thriving industrial area and the urban center will create a onestop business point for the surrounding area.

SCANDICCI MASTERPLAN

SCANDICCI MASTERPLAN

The masterplan creates a coherent, adaptable and integrated urban framework, a vibrant and compact multi-functional center which will provide highquality communal and recreational facilities for local residents. The new development will create new attractions (entertainment, arts and cultural events) attracting and retaining international, regional and local visitors (from Florence and the Tuscany region)

By increasing Florence Universitys presence in Scandicci and regenerating the Russell Newton School complex, as well as forging new links between the fashion houses and local production facilities with the town, RRPs scheme will offer a new residential typology for young professionals and students. These links will enhance businesses such as studio, hotels, conference and an exhibition center.

RRPs development strategies for Scandicci are based on sustainable principles, leading the way forward in environmental control issues and the reuse of natural resources.

The masterplan will re-organise existing movement systems and improve connections within the town and the surrounding area (15 minutes by tram to Florence city center, 25 minutes by road to Florence airport), whilst also prioritising pedestrian movement within the town
