U.S.A. sustainability today

China & India now embracing carbon emissions issue Obama effect

– Increases pressure on industry as well as time table for implementation of requirements

– Obama strategy is to reverse opinion

– Legislation will be passed forcing companies to comply with onerous targets

– Not only legislative change, but a cultural change is necessary for this U.S. throw away society

Companies need to continue to be in front of their industry as a whole, especially competition

Corporate Social Responsibility & Sustainability

Companies employing sustainability practices generally experience higher gross margins, return on sales, return on assets, cash flow and shareholder return compared to their peers

The green construction industry is expected to generate $554 billion in GDP between 2009 and 2013, up from $173 billion from 2000 – 20081

Based on average material costs, local and recycled content building materials represented approximately $7 billion in cumulative spending through 2009. By 2030, cumulative spending in this area is expected to exceed $230 billion2

Sources of resistance

People– Inherently resist change

– Want to do what they have always done

– Age profile Leaders in companies tend to be in upper age bracket Enlightened people in that age bracket must persuade peers, not just by

legislating internally Generally, this age is harder to persuade into change

Financial – Belief that sustainability costs a lot of money

– Reality is that if carried out properly, sustainability can benefit bottom line 57% of executives say benefits of pursuing sustainable practices outweigh

costs Companies can easily save average of 29% of utility costs at no net added

cost by implementing sustainability practices

This is Texas!

Rodeo is the official state sport, though

high school football is more popular. It is illegal to shoot a buffalo from the second

story of a hotel. The first word spoken from the moon

July 20, 1969, was, "Houston.” The Texas state bird is the Mockingbird. The Texas state fruit is the Red Grapefruit. The UK fits into the state of Texas three times. The population of the UK is three times larger

than the population of Texas.
