1. The Challenge!

Page 4: Richard Aaroe, CEO, WaveTrainSystems (WTS)

It happens all the time, what need to be done?

Number of unprotected Level Crossings

● UK, approx. 7 000 unsecured

● Europe = 120 000 unsecured

● USA = 130 000

● Asia = ?

● Africa = ?

● South America = ?

● Australia = ?

● World Wide = 1 000 000 (data from UIC)

Social costs per year – Accidents & Causalities

o Accidents and causalities per year = Huge Costs

● Europe ≈ 1,4 billion € related to 1246 accidents and 330 casualties

2. Network Rails social responsibility

Page 8: Richard Aaroe, CEO, WaveTrainSystems (WTS)

Do you think or do you do?

o Common understanding from Railway authorities:

● Someone dear to be first?

● Learning from others?

● Use novel technology?

● Do they have competence in using new technology?

● How can the hurdle for new technology approach decrease?

o How many lives will we loose before infrastructure improves?

Page 9: Richard Aaroe, CEO, WaveTrainSystems (WTS)

Do you think or do you do?

o What Network Rail did:

● We want to be the first

● We want to learn

● Yes we need new technology

● We build new processes to speed up implementation of new technologies

● Allowed WaveTrain® Systems to use their infrastructure and test prototypes

o We don’t want to loose any more than we do today. Numbers to be reduced!

Page 10: Richard Aaroe, CEO, WaveTrainSystems (WTS)

NR addressing the problem and having programs

o Established a program with the goal of reducing risk at level crossing with 25% over a period of 4 years

o Searching for new solutions and technology which help them achieving the goal, with huge reduction in costs and timeframe

o Quote from CP5 strategy on Level Crossing: ● In CP5 we plan to reduce significantly the risk from the public

misuse at level crossings by upgrading the protection at high risk locations, extending the programme of work started in CP4. The prioritisation of the type and timing of enhancements is informed by a whole life cost model specifically developed to support cost benefit appraisals for level crossings.

Outcome as of date - NR

o Installed 48 level crossing systems based upon new and novel technology in Anglia Route

o 60 further systems to be delivered to Anglia, Sussex and Kent Routes

o Framework Call-Off Agreement signed with some suppliers, enable NR to achieve their goals

o Very positive feedback from users who states:

● “I do feel more secure when having a warning signal and not only use “Stop, Look and Listen” before crossing

Page 13: Richard Aaroe, CEO, WaveTrainSystems (WTS)

Old Method using New Technology

o Revolutionary and Innovative solution based upon new novel technology

● Strongly focused on quality

● Focus on simplicity and reduced complexity with no reduction on quality

● Reduce investment and cost with up to 90-95% from buying todays systems

3. Public Safety

Page 20: Richard Aaroe, CEO, WaveTrainSystems (WTS)

Increased Public Safety, and benefits

o Better warning and protection system gives less restrictions for train operators, which leads to more train services

o CCTV cameras can be mounted to prevent incidents on a higher level

o No cabling gives no reason for theft which give less reduction of train services

o Connection directly to train operation central can be done

Page 21: Richard Aaroe, CEO, WaveTrainSystems (WTS)

Problem with Cable Theft?

o Our systems do not require any cabling!

No cables …

nothing to

steal!

Page 22: Richard Aaroe, CEO, WaveTrainSystems (WTS)

Dock Lane

• Distance from crossing to cabinets, approx. 15m

• Sensors fitted straight from cabinets

Products & Solutions

o Our advantages and solution set apart from today’s conventional solutions by: ● No cabling along the rails in each direction from the level

crossing − Substantial reduced installation time

− Reduced need for maintenance

− Substantial lower cost for the operators, both purchase and maintenance

● Proactive and not reactive solution, detect trains in advance

● Multi solution in terms of several possibilities − Mobile solution for work purposes along rails and tracks

− Vehicles detection (speed, type of vehicle, direction, numbers)

− Sending real-time system status information to SLA partner

− Part of security level crossing

● High security towards theft and vandalism because of hidden components
