Roberta Clark celebrates her 97th birthday on May 19, 2020. She
was born in 1923 near Washington, Iowa, the third child of John H.
and Martha (Swift) Wheelan. She married the late Robert D. Clark of
Arenzville at the Quonset Point (RI) Naval Air Station on December
29, 1944. After he returned from active duty as a naval aviator in
the Pacific theater during World War II, the couple resided in the
rural Arenzville, IL, community, where they raised their family of
eight children. Mr. Clark was engaged in farming and worked for
many years at the First National Bank of Arenzville. He died on
March 20, 1989.
Mrs. Clark completed a bachelor’s degree in journalism at The
University of Iowa in 1944 and completed teacher’s certification at
Illinois College and MacMurray College. She began teaching in
Beardstown, IL, in 1964 and moved to the Triopia (Concord, IL)
school district in 1966. She retired from teaching in 1980 but
continued to serve as a volunteer tutor for teaching English as a
second language.
Mrs. Clark has 17 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 24
great-grandchildren, and 6 step-great-grandchildren. She resides at
Clark-Lindsey Retirement Village in Urbana, IL.
