SENIOR PROJECT ABSTRACT

A 2.13.2007 Initial template release A. J. de Ruyter This semester a solar dryer with a duct system was designed. Very similar to the one on this web site: http://www.buildvision.dk/pdf/inspection_of_solar_dryers_in_ghana.pdf The difference with this design is that is has a mechanical mixer to slowly mix the rice as heated air is blown from the bottom since mechanical mixing was recommended in a few articles when there is little heat addition. Preliminary designs were made for a weight winding mechanism to turn the mixer similar to the mechanism in a grandfather clock. If for some reason this mechanism is unable to work properly a small motor will have to be used. A manual mixer would be easier to design but our advisor advised against it since he pointed out that people would be less likely to accept a mechanism that required significant additional manual labor. As for additional heat it was elected to use a small electric dryer for emergencies. The reason for this is that upon review of several fuels such as diesel, propane, wood and rice hulls most were found to be tricky to work with. It was previously concluded that building an efficient Biomass Furnace would have been the best option for having additional heat. The only problems with that idea was that samples of the actual biomass that would be used were not readily available so as to accurately design a delivery system and the expertise needed to properly design a inexpensive biomass furnace that was also eco friendly was also a determining factor. A small generator to power the fan is the planned power source and if necessary will also power a small electric heater for emergencies. Trying to use a watermill to generate additional electricity was also considered but we determined it could not be assumed that there would always be a stream readily available to generate enough electricity. The prototype design that is planed next semester is going to be ¼ Scale in that only one drying station is planned and for full scale drying four full setups would have to be combined in one room four times as wide. One issue that was not addressed was rice storage before and after drying. It is believe that the form that the rice is stored before drying would also help the overall drying time and that modified bins could aid in the removal of additional moisture as well as preventing additional moisture reenetering the rice.

3 PROJECT DESCRIPTION In areas where many communities grow rice, such as those in tropical Asia, most farmers dry the rice after harvesting it on "multi-purpose drying pavement". In most cases, this is the local road. With frequent rains, the farmers must move the rice quickly and often. If the rain continues, the rice is lost, not to mention the rice lost from vehicles driving over it. The percentage of the crop lost could be as high as 10%. This problem has been identified by the Philippines Ministry of Agriculture. The local agricultural

engineer has a prototype dryer the farmers can use to dry crops even when it rains. It is quite interesting - the primary source of energy being the rice hulls and a small diesel engine to drive the fan.

4 ESTABLISHED WORK “Rice: Chemistry and Technology” edited by Bienvendio O. Juliano Research rice drying methods and patents. Work to be utilized includes periodic meetings, library and patent research, and designing using various softwares such as SolidWorks, MATLAB, LabView.Definition_RDM_Senior Project Definition_SIM

5 SCOPE OF WORK The dryer needs improvements, which could be done by members of Engineers Without Borders. The area is safe, there are numerous contacts already established, and there is a Peace Corp volunteer in the area for the next two years that could help with the project. There is a possibility to developing drying rice mechanism without said prototype. Anticipated research of rice drying methods. Analysis of rice drying mechanism patents. Designing our own type of rice drying mechanism, or improve the prototype. Fabrication and testing will be done after design process is complete. Special documentation may be needed to provide to fit EWB-USA design criteria.

6 DELIVERABLES Project documentation such as National Brand Computation Notebook, 74 sheets numbered, 4x4 quad for notes, sketches, research, and contact date. Other documentation is a 3-ring binder used to store printed research and other miscellaneous data. Reports include meeting with senior project advisor, senior project professor, EWB-SDSU chapter, EWB advisor, and presentation to senior project classmates. Prototype will need to be developed and test data.

7 TARGET DATES 10-23-07: Most of the trade research should be completed. 10-30-07: Preliminary design phase must commence. 12-4-07: Preliminary design must be completed and ready to be presented.

8 FUNDING Partial to full funding by EWB. Possibly self funded.

Conclusion The final proposed design is not yet concluded. The testing of a possible weight winding system is currently in progress. As well as the testing of the amount of heat addition for the solar reflector so as to determine if its size has to be increased or if mirrors would have to be added to increase the heat addition. We are working under the assumption that additional airflow and mechanical mixing would be enough to generate adequate rice drying while still maintaining quality and still keep the cost of drying the rice low, despite the proposed heat addition being relatively low. We are also working under the assumption that there would be little or no electricity in the areas where the proposed rice dryer is to be built. For these reasons the final generator and fan specifications will be the last ones to be concluded since these will be purchased and could limit the final design parameters. We will continue to look for ways to improve the design up and till the prototype has been built and tested. The construction of this drying mechanism will produce a final design that could aid in the rice drying of underdeveloped regions as well as providing a starting point for other groups to continue the development of a more comprehensive drying mechanism and or make improvements to this mechanism so that it can be adapted for use in a larger range of situations.
