The City of Boca Raton presents Downtown Boca’s Brazilian Beat, designatedas one of South Florida’s official annual Brazilian Independence DayCelebrations by the Consulate General of Brazil in Miami. This free eveningfeatures a headline concert by Bossacucanova, as well as performances by theRose Max Samba Band; capoeira; zumba; Brazilian food, art, fashion and fun.

Electro-bossa pioneers BOSSACUCANOVA are celebrating 15 yearstogether, making music that completely conjures Brazilian bliss. The Rio-based trio take the classic heart of cool 1960s bossa nova, and make itnew again with fresh, groove-filled electronic wizardry, always treating theoriginal spirit with the utmost respect.

DJ Marcelinho DaLua, bassist Márcio Menescal and keyboardist AlexMoreira burst onto the international dance music scene in 1999 withRevisited Classics, a collection of both new and old bossa nova songsgiven new life and vigor through theapplication of funky breakbeats, skill-ful turntablism, electronic manipula-tion and adventurous mixology. Theidea of fusing the smooth sounds ofclassic bossa nova recordings with up-to-the-minute electronic elementswasn't new. But Bossacucanova'sapproach to Euro-Brazilian fusion isunique, in part because the trio treatsbossa nova as the main dish and thebreakbeats, electronica and otherembellishments as garnishes, ratherthan the other way around.

Live, the group includes percussionistDado Brother and the beautiful vocalsof Brazilian singer Cris Delanno, FlávioMendes on guitars and vocals andRodrigo Sha on vocals, sax and flute.

Their new release, Our Kind of Bossa(Six Degrees Records) is notable forthe caliber of special guests - here is amusical house party that bringstogether many of their heroes, inspira-tions, friends and family. Bossa novalegend Roberto Menescal (Márcio'sfather); the iconic vocal group OsCariocas; MPB scion Maria Rita; gui-tarist Oscar Castro Neves; EmilioSantiago; and so many others. It alsosees the band focusing equally onBrazil's other homegrown conconc-tion: samba.

CAETANO VELOSO's album Abraçaço, which means “big hug” inPortuguese, was released in North America on Nonesuch Records earlierthis year, following major accolades and success in South America. It wona Latin Grammy for Best Singer-Songwriter Album, and earned the #1 spoton Rolling Stone Brazil's Best Albums list. Produced by guitarist Pedro Sáand Caetano's son Moreno Veloso, Abraçaço is the final installment of a tril-ogy with the youthful trio he employed on 2007's Cê and 2009's zii e zieknown as the Banda Cê: Pedro Sá on electric guitar, Ricardo Dias Gomeson bass and Rhodes piano, and Marcelo Callado on drums.

“We are people of different generations sharing similar musical andhuman interests,” Veloso says.

The sound of the album, which forms the core of the tour, is a fusion ofthe traditional Tropicália style and the indie pop of contemporary Rio.Caetano has also revived and rearranged many of his classics from the1970's and 1980's to the delight of his band, and especially his audience.

Veloso has been at the forefront of Brazilian culture since the late 1960s,as a co-founder of the uniquely Brazilian psychedelic cultural explosionTropicalia. The echoes of the work he and his partners - Gilberto Gil, MariaBethânia, Gal Costa, Os Mutantes and others - made continues to rumblethrough music and art across the Americas and Europe today. Yet Velosohas never become a nostalgia act. He has continued to create modern, vital music and art on an international level. With this tour, he closes outa phenomenal trilogy of modern music, and prepares his audience for thenext leap.

“The Brazilian singer and song-writer is consistently one of the

most literate and beguilingforces in music.”- NPR

MEMBERS’ SEASON LAUNCH PARTYThursday September 18

Page 9: Rhythm Foundation Fall 2014 Program

Our Season Launch Party this year is a virtual trip to Brazil, coinciding withthe Grand Opening of Perez Art Museum Miami's (PAMM) new exhibition,Beatriz Milhazes: Jardim Botântico.

Rhythm Foundation Members will enjoy exclusive free access to the museumexhibition and our private event on the PAMM terrace at the opening. Theparty will feature a private viewing of the new exhibition (also open to PAMMmembers), a complimentary bar with Heineken and Leblon caipirinhas, lightbites from PAMM's wonderful Stephen Starr Caterers, and an amazing silentauction.

This special night features the Miami debut of ALMA TROPICALIA, a DC-based band that reimagines the psych-samba sounds of 60's Tropicáliamusic from Brazil. Their mind-bending mix of tropical rhythms, soulful funkgrooves and day-glo psychedelia have quickly earned the group ecstaticreviews and packed performances across the region. The lineup combinesjazz vocalist Elin (featured on Thievery Corporation's Brazil-inspired album“Saudade”) with the unhinged experimentation of some of the top backingmusicians in today's rock and world music scene (featuring members of CyroBaptista's Beat the Donkey, Bio Ritmo, and more). Between sets enjoyBrazilian grooves from DJ Marcello Bentine.

Beatriz Milhazes: Jardim BotânicoThis new exhibition at PAMM (September 19,2014 - January 11, 2015) is the first major US ret-rospective on Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes (b.1960), and will feature the artist’s large-scaleabstract paintings inspired by Brazilian andEuropean Modernism, Baroque forms, popularculture, and the decorations of Carnival. Theexhibition will include works produced over thelast 25 years of the artist’s career and examinetheir evolution from softer, more decorativeforms to harder-edged abstraction.

Page 11: Rhythm Foundation Fall 2014 Program

DIEGO EL CIGALA is, quite simply, the most exciting and innovative flamenco singer in the world today. Passionate, profound, and immenselyproud of his Spanish gypsy heritage, El Cigala has been called “theSinatra of flamenco.” His voice is earthy, exultant and richly emotive. He isone of those rare crossover artists who has stayed true to his musical her-itage while achieving name recognition with mainstream audiencesaround the world.

Born into a family of flamenco musicians, El Cigala began his solo careerin 1997. A mere four years later he was at the Latin Grammys, his nomi-nated for Best Flamenco album. That was just the beginning of much bigger things to come.

A small initial collaboration between El Cigala and legendary Cubanpianist Bebo Valdés led to the 2003 release of a collaborative duo album.Lágrimas Negras (Black Tears) became one of the most astonishingbreakthrough successess in the realm of world music. Aside from winningEl Cigala his first Latin Grammy (he now has three), Lágrimas became ahuge global hit thanks to a combination of mind-blowing live shows, ravereviews, and ecstatic word of mouth. This groundbreaking disc, with itsfusion of gypsy fire and complex Cuban rhythms, sold more than a millioncopies worldwide. Aside from winning numerous awards, LagrimasNegras was fawned over by Britain’s BBC Radio and hailed as “record ofthe year” by the New York Times.

El Cigala’s latest recording, 2013’s Romance de la luna Tucuman, offers afresh take on the Argentinean tango tradition. Tucuman triumphed at the2013 Latin Grammys, winning El Cigala a third Grammy, his second forBest Tango. This landmark album will be the focus of this latest tour.

Diego has one of the most beautifulflamenco voices of our time, a voice ofsweetness that flows over everything. –Paco de Lucía

“South Florida is as much an idea as it is a place, and few events expressthat idea as consistently as Big Night in Little Haiti. As a live music perform-ance unfolds on the third Friday night of each month, the plaza at the LittleHaiti Cultural Center is a blur of colors and skin shadings, hipsters and fami-lies, hip-hoppers and old-guard survivors. Make your way through thepacked yard and bits of conversation come at you in a jumble of languagesand accents. The event is a collaboration between the Cultural Center andthe Rhythm Foundation. And while the foundation has presented biggershows and better-known names, few events embody its mission, and its suc-cess, better than Big Night” - Miami Herald
