Rhythm & Blues In the 1920’s all recording by black performers were known as “race records”. Later this term was changed to Rhythm and Blues. Eventually the term Rhythm and Blues came to refer to the style of music. Rhythm and Blue (R&B)- strong rhythms, driving beat, bluesy singing, “Old blues found a new sound”, electric guitar & bass Several styles of music came from R&B: Rock and Roll- First performed by black artists and later copied by by white singers Chuck Berry Elvis Presley Johnny B Good Jailhouse Rock Soul- R&B & gospel feel, call and response between lead singer and back ground singers, spoken phrases like, “my, my” & “you know it”, full of spirit and rhythmic energy Aretha Franklin The Queen of Soul R-E-S-P-E-C-T
