Section 6:

Main Areas For Development 2015-16

Objective 1: Continue to develop models of distributed leadership across the school to maximise the

progress of learners.

Objective 2: Improve standards in numerical reasoning with particular focus on more able pupils.

Objective 3: Improve standards in reading with particular focus on more able pupils.

Objective 4: Continue to promote literacy, numeracy, science and ICT across the curriculum within a

purposeful creative context.

Objective 5: Wellbeing: Develop children’s reasoning, listening and oracy skills through the

implementation of a ‘philosophy for children’ curriculum.

Objective 6: Accelerate the progress of learners in Welsh and Spanish with particular focus on MAT

pupils.

Objective 7: Improve pupils’ overall fitness and level of skill by embedding a ‘multi-skills’ approach in PE

and games lessons.

Section 7:

Healthy Schools

Healthy Schools remained a key focus in 2014-2015. Some of the key activities were:

Assemblies linked to Healthy Lifestyles planned and delivered throughout the year;

Promotion of regular teeth cleaning with foundation phase pupils;

Lessons about e-safety were delivered throughout the school;

Creation of an outdoor mosaic based on the bats that live in the roof of the school;

Silver class visit to Roath Park to improve the children’s knowledge and understanding of the

world.

Page 6: RHYDRI PRIMARY SCHOOL · PDF file · 2016-03-13Objective 2: Improve standards ... Rhydri Primary School aims to make cross-curricular links between subjects and areas of learning

6

During 2015 – 2016 the school will be continuing to maintain all of the above successes and begin to

develop new initiatives to focus on and celebrate.

With the success of the Green Flag the school has strived to maintain its commitment to environmental

education. Actions have included:

New School Council were involved in the reviewing and formation of the new eco action plan and

eco-code.

Assemblies every half term focused on environmental education e.g. Litter.

Promoting drinking water within school to support learning.

School Council met with Tim Anfield from Sustrans to research sustainable transport and how

to promote ‘Walk to School’ week.

Two teachers have become involved in a Global Learning Partnership Network to support the

school interdependent world.

Community Links:

Over the year, the school has continued to develop links with the local community. They include:

- Visits from the local police to support our PSE curriculum.

- Visits to many of the churches in the local area including St Barrwgs and the Bethal Baptist

Church.

- As part of a focus on economic wellbeing, Elaine Wilkes who works for ‘Exxon Mobil’ talked to

the children about being a chemical engineer. Design consultant, Angela Gidden MBE, also spoke

to the children about running a successful business.

- Support from the Rudry Common Trust in improving the outdoor area outside Rainbow Class.

Section 11:

Policy review:

During 2014-15, the following policies were reviewed by the Governing Body:

Staff Disciplinary Policy;

Attendance Policy;

SEWC Schools Causing Concern Policy;

English and Literacy Policy;

Capability Policy;

Page 9: RHYDRI PRIMARY SCHOOL · PDF file · 2016-03-13Objective 2: Improve standards ... Rhydri Primary School aims to make cross-curricular links between subjects and areas of learning

9

Health and Safety Policy;

Lone Worker Policy;

Complaints Policy;

Assessment, Marking and Feedback Policy

Charging Policy;

More Able and Talented Policy;

Monitoring and Evaluation Policy;

Safeguarding Policy;

Children Protection Policy.

Section 12:

In 2015-16 the classes will be structured as follows:

Class Name Year Group Teacher

Rainbow Class Nursery/Reception/Year 1 Mrs Banks

Silver Class Year 2/3 Mrs Curtis

Gold Class Year 4/5/6 Mrs James

Overall, pupils are grouped according to age.

Work for pupils is differentiated so that children with a variety of abilities within a class are

appropriately supported and challenged by activities aimed at their level and tailored to their needs.

This is clearly indicated in teachers’ planning on a weekly basis and is monitored by the Head Teacher.

Teachers must also develop pupils’ bilingual skills and their sense of ‘Welshness’.

The curriculum should seek to promote:

- the acquisition of knowledge

- the development of a wide range of skills

- understanding of key concepts

- the development of personal qualities

- positive values and attitudes

Rhydri Primary School aims to make cross-curricular links between subjects and areas of learning

wherever possible. The curriculum is organised into broad ‘themes’ to help us make these connections.

Knowledge, skills, concepts and attitudes are promoted through projects that attempt to cover all

National Curriculum attainment targets over the four years the pupils attend school. The school

implements the revised ‘Literacy and Numeracy Framework into the school curriculum.

Section 13:

Building and Resource Management

During 2014-15, there have been a number of changes made to the school building to create a more

child-friendly learning environment:

1. The school entrance was redecorated and a staff noticeboard was created.

2. Redecoration of Gold Class. This included plastering, repainting and repositioning of the

interactive whiteboard.

3. Significant improvement to Rainbow Class This has included the refurbishment of a storage area

into a new learning environment for Year 1 pupils. The project, which has been 50/50 funded by

the LA, has cost an estimated £18,000 to complete. In addition, a number of other resources

have been purchased to improve this area. This includes:

outdoor display boards to display learning challenges linked to different foundation phase areas

of learning;

A purpose built ‘mud kitchen’ for the outdoor area;

New play cars for the children to use around the track area;

New road signs for the children’s track area;

Refurbishment of the bench and storytelling chair.

Following refurbishment in recent years, the standard of hygiene in the school toilets has improved.

Inspection by the local authority cleaning services identified that the cleanliness of the school has

improved. Standards of hygiene in the school kitchen have also been identified as very good.

Section 14:

Languages Across the Curriculum

Welsh is taught across the curriculum to all year groups. Recent developments in the teaching of

Welsh have included:

- Introduction of a new scheme of work for Year 3;

- Opportunities to develop incidental Welsh through Helpwr Heddiw sessions;

- Introduction of a Welsh sub-levelled skills ladder to support moderation and verification.

In addition to Welsh, all pupils in Silver and Gold Classes are taught Spanish for an hour a week.

Although not part of the National Curriculum, the opportunity to learn a ‘modern foreign language’

supports a child’s learning by:

- Improving communication and general oracy skills;

- Developing knowledge of the world;

- Improve confidence;

- Raise awareness of languages which will create an appetite when they reach secondary school.

Our Spanish teacher, Carlos Pinatti was awarded ‘Primary Modern Foreign Language Teacher of the

Year’ award by CILT Cymru in 2014.

In 2015, the majority of Year 6 pupils transferred to St Martins High School. Other

pupils transferred to Kings Monkton School, St Cenydd High School and Risca

Comprehensive.
