News from the English Department

The Great Gatsby, a production by

The Mechanicals Theatre Group

The opportunity of seeing The Great Gatsby per-formed on the 2nd February 2011 was eagerly wel-comed by the Matrics as it provided an opportunity for us to familiarise ourselves with one of our set work texts. As excited as we were, however, no-body expected to be drawn as far into the wonderful world of the 1920s by The Mechanicals Theatre Group as we were.

Any romantic plot is bound to capture a teenager’s attention immediately. We were spellbound as we journeyed into the era of lavish lifestyles and the pursuit of happiness.

The play was full of quirky moments and the occa-sional harrowing scene left the audience squirming in their seats.

The production allowed us to experience a lighter and more comical side of English whilst still illustrat-ing the themes of the story with a sense of underly-ing foreboding. The outing was a huge success!

Considerable research was done on the 2009 NSC Physical Science examination papers, and the fol-lowing extracts are from a report published by Higher Education of South Africa (HESA), which provides valuable information about the relative standard of the examination paper, in comparison with equivalent papers written around the world, using benchmark scores:

“... It is more difficult for students to achieve A grades in the NSC examination than in the AS-Level and the A-Level (Cambridge International Examining Body).”

“...The NSC examinations are more difficult than the International Baccalaureate SL examinations and of a comparable level to the HL examinations”

The bottom line is therefore as follows:

“... Candidates who wrote the 2009 NSC Physical Science Examination ... and managed to score 80% and above, achieved results that would put them amongst the best in the world at this level.”

Special congratulations, therefore, go to the follow-ing Matric 2009 learners: Saajidah Ebrahim; Dan-ielle Ferrar; Alison Lloyd; Zafeerah Omar; Shama Patel; Francis Shaw; and Sarah Westwood, who all achieved distinctions.

Happy Birthday, Miss Bekker

It was Miss Bekker’s birthday on 12 February 2011. Unfortunately, she was ill at the time, so Ms Simpson organised a group of noisy and enthusiastic girls, in their Inter-House Gala attire, to visit her house and “serenade” her.

On Wednesday 16 February 2011, Rustenburg was fortunate enough to have had an informal talk by photographer and ex-supermodel Josie Bo-rain. She spoke about her life and career as a model and as a photogra-pher. After a difficult school career in Johannesburg, Josie began her career as an international model in the 80s and was soon signed on as the face of Calvin Klein’s perfume Obsession. She also modeled for such labels as GAP, DKNY and Ralph Lauren. She was the forerunner of the ‘new’ androgynous look that still dominates the fashion world today. Soon after, she discovered her passion for photography and began to document every aspect of her life, from back stage shots to fellow mod-els, celebrities, fashion icons, and most notably, her self-portraits. Today, Josie is a noted photographer and has written a book, Josie You and Me. She lives in Hout Bay with her family and believes her most im-portant career move was having children. Josie emphasised the importance of people following their passions. All the girls who attended her talk truly enjoyed it and were inspired to follow their own passions. Magenta Graziani D4

It is very rare for a house to win this competition for two consecutive years. However, 2011 saw not only the winning house of the 2010 junior competition repeat this feat but the winners of last year’s senior competition also emulated this achievement. In the junior (Grade 8 and 9) section, the stalwarts of last year’s winning Bleby team, Michaela McHugh and Summer Thompson, teamed up with Aaliyah Vayej and Maxine Wilcox.

Under the chairmanship of Tamsin Metelerkamp, they discussed the Chinese proverb: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”, with enough width, originality and creativity to achieve the adjudicators’ unanimous verdict. In addition to winning the competition, Bleby mem-bers also won two of the speaker awards. The jun-ior results were as follows; Bleby: 225 Cambridge: 188 Innes: 176 Michiel Vos: 130 Marchand: 125 The Junior Speaker Awards [Adjudicators: Ms A. Preto-rius (Chief), Ms L. Mallon, Ms R. Fourie and Ms M. Rees] were as follows: Best Chairperson: Tamsin Metelerkamp (Bleby) First Best Speaker: Bronwen Barratt (Marchand) Second Best Speaker: Michaela McHugh (Bleby).

Only seven points separated the top two teams in the Senior Section (Grades 10 to 12) of the competi-tion. Magenta Graziani, Courtney Wallace and Nicole Petersen joined members of last year’s winning In-nes team, Lauren Jankielsohn and Chloe Kruger.

Under Chloe’s chairmanship, they successfully ex-plored a wide variety of views and interpretations of the Albert Einstein quote: “Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding”, to take the honours for Innes.

The senior results were as follows: Innes: 232 Cambridge: 225 Marchand: 189 Michiel Vos: 175 Bleby: 171 The senior adjudicators [Ms G. Wallace (Chief), Ms L. Kalis, Ms L. Albertyn and Ms L. Black] made the following awards: Best Chairperson: Chloe Kruger (Innes) First Best Speaker: Kimberley Dale (Cambridge) Second Best Speakers (shared): Nabeelah Shaboodien and Nicola Cathcart (both from Michiel Vos).

Unfortunately, COSAT (Centre of Science and Tech-nology) was unable to provide a junior side at this stage of the year. However, in the absence of com-petitive debating, the members of the Debating Soci-ety (Gabi Slingers, Chelsea Kelly, Tessa Collington-O’Malley and Ameerah Allie) set up and adjudicated two debates for the juniors to develop their skills in response to the motion: This House would ban national lotteries. The RGHS Senior debating team opened its first debate of the Rotary debating competition against COSAT (Centre of Science and Technology) on Monday 21 February at RGHS. It was wonderful to see so many members of the debating society supporting our team. Angeliki Carvounes (first and reply speaker), Re-becca Furlong (second speaker) and Cara Mazetti Claassen (rebuttal speaker) ran a very strong and united opposition line to COSAT’s proposal that: This house would not provide any government sup-port for non-vocational tertiary education.

Rebecca Furlong, speaking in her debut senior de-bate, showed that she thoroughly deserved her se-lection for this year’s touring side. In addition to Rustenburg winning the debate, Ange-liki Carvounes was adjudged the best speaker of the evening. Our next debates for this term will be on Monday 14 March (venue and opposition still to be an-nounced) and the motions are:

Juniors: This House would outlaw arranged marriages

Seniors: This House would ban the burning of National flags

as a form of public protest.

The motions for Monday 28 March are: Juniors:

This House supports the electronic tagging of con-victed paedophiles

Seniors: This House would partition Belgium.

More from the Music Department

On the morning of 12 February, the choir, orchestra and band members of SACS and RGHS woke up bright and early to pack the buses and journey out to Paarl for the greatly anticipated Jenkins Camp. We arrived at the Manyano centre (meaning `unity’) in good time and in high spirits, and admired the beautiful location, the perfect setting for the intensive musical learning and appreciation courses we were able to partici-pate in over the next two days. After a substantial breakfast, we engaged in multiple introductory rehearsals of the work to be performed by RGHS, SACS and RBHS in the annual City Hall concert in July this year. After Saturday’s rehearsals we were privileged to watch the DVD presentation of the entire work, conducted by Jenkins himself. Through Ms Dernier’s Sunday morning analysis, we learned many important and interesting things about this marvellous work.

The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace by Karl Jenkins, is not a uniquely Catholic or even Christian work, but recognizes the ‘scourge of war’ as a universal human tragedy. Jenkins contrasts the brutal and disturbing war sections with those of the hauntingly beautiful mass ex-tracts. The selected texts include words from other religious and historical sources, including the Islamic Call to Prayer, the Bible and the Ma-habharata. Writers whose words appear in the work in-clude Rudyard Kipling, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Sankichi Toge, who survived the Hi-roshima bombing. The music was dedicated to the people of Kosovo, who were suffering the ravages of war at the time that the work was written.

It is the first time that this work will be performed

by RGHS/RBHS/SACS

and it serves as a message to

the youth of the 21st century:

“Better is peace than always war”.

We have the duty of conveying that message

to the people of this land.

It was a truly inspiring weekend and a wonder-ful unity was felt by everyone as we embarked

on the journey home on Sunday afternoon. The camp was a huge success and everyone who attended owes a tremendous thank-you to Mesdames Sole, Gordon, Dernier and Graham (and Ms Jamey for all her `behind the scenes’ work), Mr McDonald for helping to train the or-

chestra on the Saturday afternoon, and Mr Gerhard de Jager (our inspiring guest conduc-

tor for the weekend) for making it a reality. Hannah MacMillan, Grade 12

On 4 and 5 February 2011, the BRIC committee, in affiliation with Habitat for Humanity, held their annual fundraiser, the Cyclathon. The Cyclathon was held at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and entailed 25 hours of relay cycling. Each cycling slot was 20 minutes and we had an array of differ-ent cyclists including teachers, students form Rus-tenburg, Westerford, Bishops, SACS and Spring-field as well as the Pick’nPay Cycling team.

During the 25 hours committee members sold ‘Brics ‘(raffle tickets) to the public. The ‘Bric’ sell-ing was extremely profitable and we were able to raise R60 000.This money will contribute to the building of one house. The event was also suc-cessful in creating awareness about the cause.

Overall the event was great fun for everyone in-volved from the working committee; people cycling to our very avid supporters. The committee of Rustenburg, Westerford and Bishops pupils were proud of the success of the event as it entailed a lot of hard work and dedication.

Communication News, from Mr G Broster

1. Hard Copy Notices Important notices that need parents to re turn a signed slip acknowledging receipt are issued as hard copy. Please read these most carefully before signing, as the reply slips are often needed for legal reasons. 2. Bi-weekly Newsletter News, results, articles and information are packed into each edition of the newsletter. These are published every second week (on average) although it can be more or less of ten depending on what’s going on in the life of the school (e.g. not during exams). The newsletter is usually delivered via email (see below), although hard copies are printed for learners whose parents do not have access to an email account. An archive of previ-ous editions of the newsletter can be found on the RGHS website at: www.rghs.org.za/newsletter-archive 3. Email (newsletter and other notices) In order to save on printing costs and to communicate directly with parents rather than relying on the pupils to be an effective courier, many notices are sent out by email. An unlimited number of emails can be att ached to each child’s account, so you can have the notices sent to your work email as well as your home, should you so wish. Send an email to [email protected] to sign up, and be sure to mention your daugh ter’s name and form class, as some notices are targeted to specific groups/grades.

4. SMSWeb SMSWeb is a bulk SMS delivery provider t hat provides a service to schools – we can send out unlimited SMS’s at a cost of R30 per number loaded on the system. For this reason, we upload only one cellphone num ber per child – should a family need more than one number loaded, R30 plus a moti vating letter should be sent via the form teacher. SMS notices are used for urgent or time-sensitive notices and reminders. You can communicate with the school by reply ing to the SMS received. 5. Website The school’s website – www.rghs.org.za – is a valuable resource, both for prospective parents and learners to find out more about the school, but also for members of the Rustenburg community, past and present to stay in touch with what is going on. Some of the features of the website include: A calendar of upcoming events Regularly updated news items on the happenings of the school Assorted photo galleries A well stocked repository of information, Including policy documents, old newsletters & feedback from the SGB 6. Mobi Website A Mobi website is specifically designed for viewing on a mobile phone. Our mobi web site (www.mobis.co.za/rghs) contains both general information such as the Office tele- phone/fax details as well as up-to-date in formation on such things as sports fixtures, daily notices & other urgent announcements.

We use various different means to communicate with

the Rustenburg community, depending on need and the urgency of the message to be conveyed.

Personalities of the Month

Earlier this month a team of Western Province de-baters took part in the prestigious Eurasian Schools Debating Championships held in Istanbul, Turkey. The team, represented by Angeliki Carvounes and Cara Mazetti-Claassen from Rustenburg High School for Girls, Colin Bessaans from Westorford High School and Robert Grant and Ihsaan Bassier from Rondebosch Boys’ High School, was accom-panied by UCT coaches Alex de Jager and Thomas Mclennan. The many hours of training and hard work preced-ing the tournament paid off because they performed phenomenally well to be the only undefeated team after six rounds in a competition, which included na-tional teams from over fifty countries. They broke in second place behind Singapore and went on to win their quarter-final against Germany. The team lost to Greece in the semi-finals and placed third overall behind first placed Singapore and Greece (second).

This was an exceptional achievement for a provin-cial team. In addition to this outstanding team performance, the speakers excelled individually earning praise and acknowledgement for the high standard of de-bating in South Africa. With more than 250 speakers in the competition, it was an exceptional achieve-ment that all five WP speakers were ranked amongst the top 15 speakers of the Championships. Robert Grant ranked 15th, Ihsaan Bassier 14th, Cara Mazetti Claassen 9th and Colin Bessaans 8th . Angeliki Carvounes was ranked the best speaker in Eurasia. The speakers and their coaches deserve to feel proud of this outstanding achievement. All Rustybugs are exceptionally proud of Cara and Angeliki’s achievements. They have taken the high level of debating at Rustenburg High School into the international arena.
