INTRODUCTION I often get questions from acupuncturists who want to see more children in their practice. “How can I see more kids?” “How can I supplement what I learned in school?” But the most common question is: “I want to see kids in my practice—where do I start? “

While there is a lot of information available to help you out, I realized there wasn’t a useful resource that gathers them up and presents them in a meaningful way. That’s why I’ve created this roadmap. I want to help you see more kids in your practice, have more positive clinical outcomes with children, and/or realize your goals in your practice.

I chose the word “roadmap” on purpose. Everyone wants to get to a particular place for different reasons, and everyone’s experience once they get to that destination will vary, too. But first they have to get there! A roadmap helps each person, regardless of varying expectations and goals, to get where they want to go. That is the goal of this guide—to provide you the information to help you reach where you want you and your practice to be. Even if you aren’t sure where that is (yet).

I’m going to break the roadmap into five steps. Each step represents a different place in the journey when seeing children in your acupuncture practice. Where each acupuncturist starts and which step they desire to obtain will vary. In any case, this roadmap can help you get there.

STEP 1: DESIRE

Where do I start? I want to see more kids, but have little training. Where do I start and how do I get there?

STEP 2: TRAINING

Beyond the basics. I want confidence in seeing kids and dealing with their parents.

STEP 3: TREATING

Applying what you know. I’m feeling better about how to treat kids. Now I’m ready for the next step.

STEP 4: PEDIATRIC PRACTICE BUILDING

Grow a thriving family practice. I’ve seen kids and had great results. How do I see more?

STEP 5: PEDIATRIC ACUPUNCTURE SPECIALIST

Be the “go to” person. I want to be the acupuncturist parents want to bring their kids to for better health.

APPENDIX 1: BOOKS

The books recommended below are books I own and use. They are also authors I trust and respect. They cover many aspects needed for pediatric acupuncture. I have included quotes from the books’ descriptions to give you an idea of what they cover.

Pediatric Acupuncture Textbooks

Pediatric Acupuncture by May Loo Dr. Loo breaks down treat modalities, initial intake, and TCM differential diagnosis for common pediatric illnesses. This is by far my favorite book on pediatric acupuncture.

“This practical introduction to pediatric acupuncture and related techniques explores the important concepts of childhood development and integrates conventional theories with those of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Provides effective acupuncture techniques for treating 22 common childhood conditions, with special emphasis on treatments that are safe, simple, non-invasive, and readily accepted by children.”

Acupuncture in the Treatment of Children by Julian Scott and Teresa Barlow

“In this broadly expanded third edition, the authors explore a number of new topics and revisit many of the old ones with fresh perspective. In addition to the thirty subjects covered in earlier editions are sixteen new chapters which examine a wide variety of topics, from basic childhood patterns, puberty and the stages of development, immunizations, and learning difficulties to hay fever, hyperactivity and attention deficit disorder, autism, Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy and infantile paralysis.”

Pediatric Tuina

Chinese Pediatric Massage Therapy: A Parent’s and Practitioner’s Guide to the Treatment and Prevention of Childhood Disease by Fan Ya-Li This book will give you the basics you need to confidently perform pediatric tuina on children.

“Chinese pediatric massage becomes accessible for both professional practitioners of Chinese medicine and parents in this guide to its basic theories and techniques. It explains specific Chinese massage techniques for the treatment of many pediatric complaints, including diarrhea, colic, vomiting, constipation, excessive drooling, bed-wetting, night crying, and colds. Illustrations show how to apply each treatment.”

Chinese Pediatric Massage: A Practitioner’s Guide by Kyle Cline This book is a comprehensive guide to pediatric tuina. It’s not as easy to access as Dr. Fan Ya-Li’s book but it provides more massage techniques as well as a full history of the development and use of xiao er tuina.

“This clearly illustrated guide is designed to give all health care providers–massage therapists, homeopathic and allopathic practitioners, and bodyworkers–who know the general concepts of
