OXFORDSHIRE RFU RUGBY DEVELOPMENT TEAM BULLETIN July and August traditionally saw the ‘muddied oafs’ of rugby become the ‘flannelled fools’ of cricket. Although many of us take the opportunity to wind down and re- focus during the summer, there has been plenty of rugby activity this month. Whilst also taking the opportunity to recharge the batteries the Local Development Team has continued to work on strategies to grow the game in the communities of Oxfordshire, concentrating on the shortened forms of the game and working with clubs to ensure they are prepared for the inevitable rise in interest generated by the Rugby World Cup. The following offers a brief summary of the work that we have been doing along with some more detailed reports from the headline events. Activity in August: Rounds 2&3 of the Participation Cup at Wallingford and Rugby In The Parks (see below). Return to Rugby rollout with Littlemore RFC (see below). Support of pre-season work with girls Local Rugby Partnership. Discussions with schools, colleges and universities regarding work in the coming academic year. Championship Captain’s Photoshoot at Wheatley RFC. Participation Cup Round 2 – Saturday 25 th July 2015, Wallingford RFC With the pitches marked out, BBQ firing out bacon and burgers and referees ready with whistles, the 2 nd leg of the Participation Cup took place at Wallingford RFC eight teams took to the field and played five matches each with the eventual winners coming from Wallingford Touch. It was great to see some new teams had entered, including a squad from Thatcham RFC across the border in Berkshire. Another great morning of Touch was had, though we do wish Kat from Banbury a speedy recovery after damaging her wrist in the first game.

OXFORDSHIRE RFU RUGBY DEVELOPMENT TEAM BULLETIN

July and August traditionally saw the ‘muddied oafs’ of rugby become the ‘flannelled fools’ of cricket. Although many of us take the opportunity to wind down and re-focus during the summer, there has been plenty of rugby activity this month.

Activity in August:

Rounds 2&3 of the Participation Cup at Wallingford and Rugby In The Parks (see below).

Return to Rugby rollout with Littlemore RFC (see below). Support of pre-season work with girls Local Rugby Partnership. Discussions with schools, colleges and universities regarding work in the coming

academic year. Championship Captain’s Photoshoot at Wheatley RFC.

Participation Cup Round 2 – Saturday 25th July 2015, Wallingford RFC

With the pitches marked out, BBQ firing out bacon and burgers and referees ready with whistles, the 2nd leg of the Participation Cup took place at Wallingford RFC eight teams took to the field and played five matches each with the eventual winners coming from Wallingford Touch. It was great to see some new teams had entered, including a squad from Thatcham RFC across the border in Berkshire. Another great morning of Touch was had, though we do wish Kat from Banbury a speedy recovery after damaging her wrist in the first game.

Rugby In The Parks – Sunday 23rd August 2015, South Park, Oxford

Thank you to all of the volunteers, clubs and members of the public that joined us for Rugby In The Parks. The main attraction was the Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour and it has been fantastic to see so many images on social media of people from across the county taking the opportunity to have their picture taken with the William Webb Ellis Trophy. Hopefully it will be staying in England for a few more years! It was great to see more than 50 children taking part in the Kids First Rugby games throughout the morning. Despite the poorly timed weather interruption the enthusiasm on display was first class.

Rugby In The Parks also saw the third round of the Participation Cup attract over 120 touch rugby players proving that every round attracted more and more new faces.  Banbury particularly did themselves proud with their numbers, which is why they were awarded the Participation Cup Trophy (obviously the most important trophy of the day!). Brill, The Inbetweeners and Wallingford also did well with great playing numbers and dedication to the concept of the tournament. Plans are already under way for next summer’s programme.
