RFID “Radio Frequency Identification…

“RFID is a wireless link to uniquely identify objects or people.”

RFID systems include Electronic devices called transponders or tags.Reader electronics to communicate with the tags.

Page 3: RFID in Logistics

How RFID works ?These systems communicate via radio signals that carry data either unidirectional or bidirectional.

When a transponder enters a read zone, its data is captured by the reader and can be transferred to a host computer.

RFID v/s BarcodeNo Line of Sight required.

Provides Read/write options.

Can store huge amount of information.

Multiple tags can be read simultaneously.

RFID in FedEx…FedEx delivers approximately 3.2 million parcels daily and operates a fleet of more than 42,500 vehicles worldwide.

Two Ways:- oKeyless entry and ignition system.

oTracking system.

Page 7: RFID in Logistics

Keyless entry and ignition…

RFID readers mounted at each of the four doors to the delivery vehicle.

Transponder wristband.

Page 8: RFID in Logistics

Keyless entry and ignition…

The transponder’s code is compared to ones in the system’s memory.

If it is a match, the door unlocks for five seconds.

Keyless entry and ignition…

With RFID, FedEx delivery personnel are freed from the hassles of juggling their keys while carrying armloads of packages.

If a wristband is misplaced, a new code can be reprogrammed in a matter of seconds.

Tracking system…Encoding station

RFID smart tags are applied to every package.

Each tag information is entered in the FedEx Super system database.

From here on the packages are generally sent to the conveyor system to be loaded.

Destination tracking…The shipment can be automatically directed to the appropriate dock door, truck, carrier, etc.

While on the way to destination the delivery truck, airplane are constantly kept track of by the transponders on them.

Advantages of RFID in Logistics…

Eliminate plant interruptions at just-in-time clients.

Offer less costly transportation services, with guaranteed visibility.

Optimize internal operations with accurate asset management.

Page 16: RFID in Logistics

Eliminate plant interruptions at just-in-time clients.

Using RFID to determine the location of the package and the progress of fulfilling a customer order.

Logistics providers can determine the time of delivery for this package, and determine if expedited service is necessary.

Page 17: RFID in Logistics

Optimize internal operations

Companies use RFID-based technologies to assess whether a trailer is present in the yard, is empty or already loaded.

. Using RFID to gauge the location and the status of these assets, logistics providers can significantly reduce asset use

Page 18: RFID in Logistics

Optimize internal operations

The provider is kept up to date on the location of assets and space availability in its yard.

Thus minimizing the efforts of yard operators to place and

locate trailers.

Less costly transportation

services…

A logistics provider like Horizon Lines can target importers in these verticals.

RFID technology gives Logistics provider uninterrupted visibility of the vehicles and packages.

ConclusionCompanies should consider implementing RFID and logistics management techniques, as they will greatly benefit from it.

It will reduce cost, increase control and availability, decrease chances of loss of assets due to various factors as well as prove to be very economical.

Page 21: RFID in Logistics

ConclusionMost of them are currently using manual techniques, which is not as efficient as RFID.

They have to understand that asset management will be a key factor in improving customer satisfaction as well as help in customer retention.
