Much of the preserve is owned by the Duke of Tarifa. Towards the 1930s the private property becomes property of the marquises of Borguetto, they sold them in different parts. There were many projects, but most of them failed, losing plants and animal species.

The biotope has a Mediterranean climate. This climate is characterized by relatively wet winters and dry summers that are the result of changes in the polar front and subtropical high pressures. The rainiest seasons are the intermediate, especially in spring and autumn, when there are torrential rains caused by the heat in the masses of water during the summer, and the arrival of polar cold drops. Temperatures are mild throughout the year.
