Since 2004, Weatherford’s Revolution point-the-bit, rotary-steerable system(RSS) has helped operators improve both sides of the cost-per-barrel equation
by enabling wells to be drilled precisely and efciently to target, while leaving aborehole that is smoother, cleaner, and easier to case and complete. Today, theRevolution line ranks highest among all offerings in meeting the industry’s Top
TechnicalCriteria* for rotary-steerable systems. With the Revolution system, eldoperators can be assured of smoother wellbores, larger operating envelopes, more completion options and less NPT.
Revolution systems are offered in 4.75-, 6.75- and 8.25-in. outer diameter (OD)sizes to deliver their benets to hole sizes ranging from 6 to 18.25 in. (150 to456 mm). Various system congurations meet industry needs, ranging fromstandard directional drilling applications to high-pressure/high-temperature (HP/HT)operations and performance, underbalanced and vertical drilling applications.

The Revolution technology was the industry’s rst slimhole (4.75-in.) point-the-bit,rotary-steerable system. Unlike push-the-bit systems, which rely on side-force andside-cutting action, the Revolution system orients the drill-bit axis in the desireddirection, focusing all cutting action on the face of the bit to provide precise, agilesteering on all types of well trajectories, from simple to the most complex.
The smoother wellbores drilled with the Revolution system reduce the risk of
stuck pipe, make tripping and casing running easier, and reduce drilling uidand cement cost. Smooth, horizontal drainholes are signicantly easier tocomplete, particularly in multistage fracs that are critical to many complex andunconventional oil and gas developments. Smoother wellbores also create more“setting-friendly” environments for expandable well screens.
Better wellbores enable high-quality
formation evaluation measurements.
Borehole washouts, rugosity and spiraling contribute to environments thatmake petrophysical measurements difcult. Smooth boreholes drilled withRevolution
RSS eliminate these issues.

Evolving reservoir contact.
Fromextended-reachhorizontalstomultilateralsand

reservoircontacttoincreasewellproductivity.
Maximizing reservoir productivity, particularly in unconventional and matureelds, is dependent upon complex well architectures designed to expose asmuch of the reservoir as possible to the wellbore. Drilling and completing thesecomplex wells successfully and economically requires the ability to place themprecisely.
Revolution RSS near-bit, logging-while-drilling (LWD) sensors provide geological
information while drilling to enable geosteering decisions to be made quickly. Thehigh dogleg capability of the Revolution system ensures that the wellbore can beeasily adjusted to optimize wellbore placement.
At-bit measurements signicantly enhance geosteering and hole quality controlby providing early warning for timely adjustments, even in thinly interbeddedreservoirs. Weatherford’s deep-reading LWD resistivity sensor identies theproximity of oil/water contacts to help prevent crossing geological boundariesand to keep the well in the productivity “sweet spot.”
The Revolution RSS integrates rotary
steering with the industry’s most robust
LWD and measurement-while-drilling
(MWD) systems to ensure, in less time, precise wellbore placement in complex
drainage schemes designed to maximize
reservoir contact and well productivity.

Evolving ROP – a unique option.
The Revolution Plus system incorporates a high-performanceWeatherford HyperLine™ motor power section above therotary-steerable tool (RST) to signicantly increase power tothe bit, reduce stick-slip and deliver signicantly higher ROP.
Weatherford offers two options for obtaining data, includingat-bit measurements, from the RST. The rst option uses awired motor power section to enable direct communicationbetween the LWD system and the RST.
A second wireless option is based on Weatherford’sunique DualPulser ™ telemetry service, which enablesdirect transmission of the RST and LWD data using twoindependent pulsing systems that operate simultaneouslyin the same drillstring. The rst pulser is housed within theRST. The second pulser is housed within the LWD system. The two pulsers transmit data at different frequencies. TheWeatherford Spectrum™ surface system is congured todecode the two data streams simultaneously.

Evolving vertical control.
Whetherdrillingaverticalwellorcorrectingawellthathas

Cutting the cost of staying vertical.
When drilling vertical wells through dipping beds, especially in tectonically stressedenvironments, the drilling assembly often tends to build angle along the path of leastresistance. The Revolution V technology is set to maintain zero-degree inclinationautomatically to prevent any deviation. This feature ensures that vertical wells canbe drilled on target with higher weight on bit, thereby increasing the ROP. Integrating
a Weatherford HyperLine™ motor power section into the Revolution V systemfurther increases ROP. Similarly, if the Revolution V RSS is run in a vertical well thathas deviated off course, it will automatically bring the well back to vertical.
Reducing upper-hole collision risk.
Pad and platform drilling involve drilling multiple directional wells from a single location. While drilling the upper-hole sections of these wells to kick-off point, well teams runthe risk that the wells will collide or tangle. By maintaining verticality, the collision riskis minimized. A small nudge can also be used to further separate the wells.
Minimizing sticking and borehole stability problems.
Continuous drillstring rotation reduces the risk of stuck pipe and potential resulting
wellbore stability issues.
Expanding wellbore construction options.
By drilling a smooth vertical wellbore, the Revolution V RSS enables drillers tochoose amoung a wider range of wellbore construction options.

The surface-based DownLinkCommander communications system uses pulsetelemetry to deliver drilling commands rapidly to the Revolution system, to holda given course or to change trajectory—without any interruption to the drillingprocess. The DownLinkCommander can transmit control signals to the RSS ina matter of seconds, and a complete control instruction can be delivered andveried in less than a minute.
When drilling with air, foam or any compressible drilling uid, where mud-pulsetelemetry cannot be used, Weatherford uses its EMPulse™ electromagnetictelemetry to transmit both LWD and RSS data continuously.
EMPulse telemetry enables continuous data transmission independently of anyrig operation, and because the Revolution and Weatherford® LWD systems arebattery powered, downhole measurement can be acquired and transmitted evenwith pumps off, for example while tripping or with the well shut in.
Using Weatherford’s real-time information management services, real-time RSS,LWD and mud logging, data are transmitted securely from the rig to any Internet-connected terminal, allowing Revolution RSS operations to be monitored remotely.

Evolving reliability.Revolution rotary-steerable systems are designed with no moving pads or pistonson the exterior of the tool and no moving parts exposed to drilling uid. The systemis powered by lithium batteries and therefore avoids reliability issues associatedwith turbine-powered systems, especially in high-sand, LCM-content uids.
A stick-slip mitigation device can be added to the system to dampen torsionalvibration and signicantly improve ROP. Real-time monitoring of downholevibration using Weatherford’s TVM™ true vibration monitor, triaxial-vibration LWDsensor enables the operator to ne-tune drilling parameters to avoid destructivedrilling vibration.
All Revolution system electrical and mechanical components are tested in
concrete blocks to ensure reliability. In addition to the block testing, all electricaland mechanical components of the Revolution rotary-steerable and Weatherford®
LWD systems are rigorously tested under specied temperature, pressure andvibration conditions during manufacturing and maintenance.
The modular design of the Revolution system makes it easily eld-maintainable.Components are readily changeable and transportable, which is particularlyadvantageous when operating in remote locations.
