Reflection: I created this presentation for a regular education 9th grade Modern World History class in an urban setting. Most students at my school are what I would describe as average in both intelligence and ability. I created this power point using a variety of techniques as a way to address and engage the differences in my student’s basic knowledge and abilities. This presentation was designed to be an introductory lesson on the French Revolution and its impact on Europe and the world as a whole. I wanted students to make connections between what they already knew and remembered from the Enlightenment, and the American Revolution and connect it to the events of the French Revolution as well as the Revolutions that are sweeping across the Middle East today. I found the current political world turmoil to be a fantastic opportunity to connect my students with the idea of revolution and the impact and consequences that revolutions can and do present. Incorporating the principles of constructivism and the 5e’s were central to the development of this power point presentation. As a result the focus of this presentation was on student involvement and interaction, student centered, teacher guided not dominated. This approach encourages students both individually and as group members to take active roles in their learning in general and this assignment specifically. As students are required to take a more active role in their own learning through exploration, experimentation, and presentation they become more vested in the outcome and gain a more in-depth understanding of the material being taught and as a result they will retain this information longer and in greater detail. Finally, the move from the traditional approach of instruction to the constructive approach is a challenge for both me as a teacher and I am sure for my students. I have been teaching using these techniques for a long time. I just never called or labeled my teaching as constructivism.
